I would rather have a big burden and a strong back, than a weak back and a caddy to carry life's luggage.

Abdur Rahim, in his early 60s, works as a rickshaw-puller in the city of Dhaka.

He used to be a rickshawpuller in his hometown Kishoregonj, but then he decided to move to Dhaka with his wife for a better future.

I met him at the Komolapur Railway station where he boarded the train to go see his relatives in his hometown.

Shah Alam hails from Hatia and has been driving a rickshaw for the last 25 years. Even at this age, he lives in the city by himself, but his love and affection towards his family pulls him in every 20 odd days. Has 4 sons and 2 daughters, and that kind of says how densely populated the country is(more so when you think about the annual GDP of the entire population).

When asked if he finds it difficult to live all alone, he said thats how life is!

There was a rickshaw stand in the area, and some of the rickshaw pullers had already returned home after their day's work. One such rickshawpuller's son was playing with his father's vehicle.

He has a face, which doesn't delineate sharply in our mind.

Only his feet on pedals we focus. Because we want more speed from his feet, more revolution from the wheel of rickshaw. He is a rickshaw puller from this busy Dhaka city.

In this life, where we hardly focus on anyone but ourselves on the way, it's almost impossible to remember a rickshaw puller's face after we reach our destination. You might remember the bright colors of his rickshaw, but not his dull, tired face.

The lens of eye and the lens of a camera....both misses him.

He is the bokeh man.

Dhaka , the city of mosques & rickshaw.

Photo taken in front of 'Nawbabgonj Boro Mosjid' at Lalbagh road. It was drizzling here and there in Dhaka & rickshaw pullers in moist clothing were looking for their next passenger. It is pluvial condition all over the country. Flood took place in many areas. Many places is now underneath of huge amount of water, crossing danger zone. And think for a while that many of these rickshaw pullers are from outside of Dhaka. Please, pray for our country.

I have a daughter to marry off and I cant seem to manage the money for her wedding. Those were his words. I didnt know if I should beleive him or not- there are plenty of people who are coming up with such lines these days.

But then I thought I should give him the benefit of doubt. He says he has been driving the rickshaw for years, but can't seem to pull it for more time due to his fading health.

Overcoming The Shadow........... A Challenge

Kolkata, the last bastion of human powered tana (pulled) rickshaws.......

A pulled rickshaw (or ricksha) is a mode of human-powered transport by which a runner draws a two-wheeled cart which seats one or two persons. Around 1880, rickshaws appeared in India, introduced by British missionaries and administrators, first in Simla and then it was introduced in Kolkata (Calcutta). In the 19th century, rickshaw pulling became an inexpensive, popular mode of transportation across Asia.

In recent times the use of human-powered rickshaws has been discouraged or outlawed in many countries due to concern for the welfare of rickshaw workers. In August 2005, the Government of West Bengal announced plans to completely ban pulled rickshaws on the grounds that their use constitutes an exploitative form of labour, causes traffic congestion, and reflects negatively on the city, resulting in protests and strikes of the pullers.

For other perspectives like, 'The hand-pulled rickshaws of Calcutta constitute the last remaining pedestrian form of transportation (in a sizable fleet) in existence in the world today'.........Read this article:
