In 1950, the Powerglide automatic transmission was introduced in lower priced Chevrolet automobiles and would go on to be used by General Motors for nearly a quarter of a century. Hard to imagine in our era of lightweight materials, but those transmissions were first made of cast iron for over a decade until GM changed the makeup to aluminum in 1963.
The initial transmissions had two gears, low and drive and necessitated a manual shifting.
I suspect many of man’s inventions and developments have come from engineering folks who got their ideas from watching animals and birds and wondered if there were adaptable traits. The aeronautical industry definitely studied the ability of birds and how that could be used in their efforts to have man fly.
On a windy fall day, I watched a couple of adult eagles fly high with their wings doing a rhythmic pumping to achieve great heights and then they would glide for long distances using their own original Powerglide principles.
Note on the shot of this eagle how the feathers at the end of his wings are not splayed out but closed as he glides.

PANO-Date Supplemental: While working with Photoshop layers that included a PANO shot at night, these dots popped up out of nowhere. They look to be the size of a 35mm negative strip but that, of course, would be impossible. Any ideas?

Een pulserende gloed op de nieuwe site van kunsthal BRUSK verraadt het al: je nadert het bonzende hart van de Machina Lumina, het meest moderne en nieuwe onderdeel van de machine. Hier zie je hoe de schaduwfiguren, wezens die zonder het licht niet kunnen bestaan, met virtuoze precisie het licht temmen en bundelen zodat het in compacte vorm verder naar de kern van de Machina kan reizen.

I framed it off-center, deliberately incomplete, because centering would have killed the movement — I needed the curve to enter the frame like a wave, coming from somewhere outside and escaping upward without resolving. What I was looking for wasn't a building but a score: these stripes are measures, the concrete is a staff, and the whole thing rises toward something that never ends within the frame. The grey sky isn't a constraint — it's a neutral backdrop that refuses to compete with the geometry's precision, the way silence holds space between notes. There is something paradoxically organic in this concrete: the spiral climbs like a shell, like growth, and the industrial architecture ends up resembling nature turned to stone.
