On a visit the other weekend up into the Dandenong Ranges on the outskirts of Melbourne, I came upon this magnificent magenta rhododendron absolutely covered in a profusion of beautiful magenta blooms.
Rhododendron is a very large genus of about 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family. They can be either evergreen or deciduous. Most species are native to eastern Asia and the Himalayan region, but smaller numbers occur elsewhere in Asia, and in North America, Europe and Australia.
Melbourne has experienced a colder and wetter than average winter this year, which is now bleeding well and truly into a wetter and greyer than average spring, however on the rare sunny days we are currently getting, the showing of flowers and blossoms is beautiful.

Rhododendron is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family (Ericaceae), either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia, although it is also widespread throughout the lowland and montane forests of the Pacific Northwest, California, and the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. Most species have brightly coloured flowers which bloom from late winter through to early summer. Azaleas are subgenera of Rhododendron. 10020
. . . blooming beautifully on the UC Berkeley campus. . . . . 😊
More a laurel than a rhododendron, it seems to me, but the two are so inter-connected. . . . try as I might, I can never learn the real distinction, if there is one.
Walking in the woods a few days ago I noticed a splash of colour off amongst the Pine trees and evergreens.
Coming to a small clearing I found this beautiful Rhododendron in full bloom, no other plants of it's kind in sight.

Rhododendron ferrugineum (alpenrose, snow-rose, or rusty-leaved alpenrose) is an evergreen shrub that grows just above the tree line in the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura, and the northern Apennines, on acid soils.
It is the type species for the genus Rhododendron. It may grow up to 1 m tall and produces clusters of pinkish-red, bell-shaped flowers throughout the summer.
