Retrocomputing (a portmanteau of retro and computing) is the use of early computer hardware and software today. Retrocomputing is usually classed as a hobby and recreation rather than a practical application of technology; enthusiasts often collect rare and valuable hardware and software for sentimental reasons. However some do make use of it.[1] Retrocomputing often gets its start when a computer user realizes that expensive fantasy systems like IBM Mainframes, DEC Superminis, SGI workstations and Cray Supercomputers have become affordable on the used computer market, usually in a relatively short time after the computers' era of use.

In the early 1980's a boom in the UK home computer market led to many small outfits being set up to write software for the myriad of machines being produced. ByteLand were one of those, producing a small number of games for the Oric-1. This advert is from Personal Computer News Issue 30, of 1983.

I've always been fond of the IIe - the first one I saw was at Myers back when they had a dedicated business computing department (although technically it was the Platinum model), and I really impressed - it seemed so much fancier that the VIC-20s and Commodore 64s I was used to.

The switches and pushbutton on the left are used to control the state of the computer. The 'Q' and data LEDs are the only provided output. The parallel port and power connector round everything out.

Under the CPU, written on the PCB it says "Bob's board".

The worst of the cosmetic damage.

First, the paper tape reader (bottom) has a cracked housing. It's a clean-ish crack all the way through, so I stopped at TAP Plastics today to get some plastic weld for it. It should go back together OK, though it won't be cosmetically perfect.

Next, the paper tape punch (up top) is missing its characteristic clear plastic buttons. While I was at TAP I picked up a foot of 5/8" clear plastic rod, it's a perfect fit. I'll cut 1" sections, melt a little catch into the bottom so they don't pop out the top, and it should look and function as if it were completely original.
