We had Selene tested for Leukemia and AIDS today since somehow she never got a leukemia vaccination (and she had escaped once and was gone for two weeks) ... luckily she tested negative.
My vet said it is very rare for leukemia to hide in the bone marrow - but that is still a possibility -- as is auto-immune disease and aplasia (which could be causing his bone marrow not to make new blood cells).
None of these things are really treatable ... our only hope is to kick-start his bone marrow with the prednisone.
We've opted not to do the bone marrow test. If we did it and we found out he had leukemia - there is nothing we could do for it anyway ... and the diagnosis is the only benefit of performing this surgery which he could die from. Therefore, it makes no sense to pursue this route.
Thank you all so much for your prayers -- we are still in much need of them. He'll be going back to the vet the week after next - just prior to my leaving for vacation ... when we will retest his blood and decide where to go from there.
