An Anhinga in its glorious mating colors - who could resist!!

During mating season, the male anhinga develops extra crest feathers on the head, and the flesh around the eyes may turn a bright emerald green. Males begin courtship with lots of high flying, soaring through the area, and then marking out a possible nest spot. Then he turns on the fancy moves, flapping his wings alternately and bending his head low, extending the tail to the sky. Once the female accepts, the male brings her nesting material and she builds a platform, usually in a bush or tree low over the water. They incubate the eggs together for nearly a month.

Erigé à la pointe de Saint Cast (pointe de l'Isle), ce monument en granit inauguré le 6 aout 1949 rappelle l'Histoire de la Résistance lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. Il rend hommage aux hommes et femmes qui se sont "évadés" pour rejoindre l'Angleterre et la résistance qui s'y organisait, ainsi qu'à ceux qui ont apporté leur aide pour la réussite de ces "évasions", et bien sûr à tous ceux qui y perdirent la vie.

Sur son socle on peut lire : " « Aux Évadés de France qui préfèrent mourir debout que vivre à genoux. »" et sur le haut du portique on voit Honneur et Patrie de part et d'autre d'une Croix de Lorraine. Il serait la réplique de celui qui fut élevé à la frontière espagnole.

En février 1941, le Buhara appareilla depuis la baie de la Frênaye. À son bord, 15 jeunes gens partis rejoindre les Forces françaises libres en Angleterre. Parmi eux, neuf élèves pilotes de l’École élémentaire de pilotage de Saint-Brieuc, leur instructeur, un technicien aéronautique et quatre Dinardais volontaires. Mais après différents problèmes en mer qui finalement immobilisèrent le bateau, il fut arraisonné par un patrouilleur Allemand.

Arrêtés, deux des jeunes hommes furent fusillés comme instigateurs et bailleurs du projet, les 14 autres furent déportés au camp de Lüttringhausen. Deux y décédèrent.

Le monument aux évadés compte les 2 noms, Pierre Armand Devouassoud et Jean Magloire Dorange, les fusillés.

A droite du monument, on aperçoit le "canon de la Corbière" qui faisait partie d'une batterie de quatre canons placés à la pointe de Saint-Cast (pointe de l'Isle) et a donc participé à la bataille de Saint-Cast le 11 septembre 1758, quand la France, alliée de l'Autriche, était en guerre contre l'Angleterre et la Russie...

If you look close you will see a little movement in this shot as it was a very windy day. I was capturing shots as the bough swung my way and in total there were about 160 unusable shots. I couldn't resist this one simply because of the arrangement of the blossom purely by nature. Taken hand held using a vintage lens on a windy day and not a highlight blown even though some bokeh appears a little bright.

One more image from my most recent visit to Bella Pace. The villa is a great subject from almost any angle, and I couldn't resist this view up the hill and across the sunflowers.

Too much of that going around these days.

On the higher mountains the first snow has fallen, but here around this meander of river the last colors of autumn are resisting. I think it deserved a photo.

This red-shouldered hawk was kind enough to give me a warm send off at the end of a recent outing at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge . This shot was captured toward the end of the day and the lighting wasn't fantastic, but being as the hawk was so obliging I couldn't resist.
