St Denys, Little Barford, Bedfordshire
An idyllic spot half a mile south of the Cambridgeshire border. St Denys is a substantial church sitting on a mound across the meadows and separated from them by a haha ditch. A large, abandoned manor house and a similarly abandoned farmhouse are the only company, but this remoteness is belied by the Barford power station looming over the trees to the north.
The church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The atmosphere is delicious, at once of age and continued care. Highlights include an early 16th Century screen painted with Tudor roses, and a delightful Arts and Crafts window of the Adoration of the Shepherds, by the Scottish artist Mary Isobel Wood.
The 1535 brass to Thomas and Agnes Perys would be one of the last of its kind, the prayers for their souls that the inscription asks for would shortly be outlawed by the new Church of England.

This is happening now! I've put in my notice at my day job, made traveling plans, and am looking to make a fresh start. I'm selling my artwork at www.joeybates.com at really low prices. Things that used to be $500 are now $180. Things that used to be $200 are now $80. Crazy, I know.
