The French may have left Pondicherry, their tiny bastion in British India, 51 years ago, but this city in Southeastern India has preserved what they left behind.

Signs of France can been seen immediately in the more than 270 heritage buildings that stand in the colonial quarter of the city. "Nowhere else in India can you see in one section of a city such a large number of well-preserved colonial .

While India worked furiously to dismantle links to Britain after gaining independence in 1947, Pondicherry has held dearly to French names and institutions. Residents don't appear to harbor resentment toward the French, and that has aided the city's preservation efforts

Anger is a feeling natural to the human condition; it is a feeling that each human being experiences especially when we are being challenged, threatened or hurt. There are obviously degrees of anger, and rage is anger at its highest level of intensity. Aggression occurs when anger turns from a feeling into a hurtful or harmful action or behavior. Resentment is holding onto and carrying anger as a permanent possession, being weighted down with anger. It usually occurs when you have not fully addressed or resolved being hurt by someone who currently matters, or at one time mattered, in your life.

Resentment also derives from a person's sense of "entitlement". According to Erikson (2006) entitlement is the basic prerequisite for an "advanced course" in anger. When there are long traffic delays, angry people feel entitled to no impediments; teenagers 'grounded' by mom or dad are "entitled" to stay out as late as their friends. Anger is a reaction to an unfulfilled expectations. Anger says "I want". According to Adlerian theory, the intensity of the anger depends on what the angry person wants-and how badly they want it. Adler (1927) also noted that "Anger is the variable epitome of the striving for power and dominance."

Too often we prefer to blame others for our anger. So often we hear, "See what you made me do?" "You make me so angry" or "You know how mad I get when you..." In these situations we blame our anger on someone or something else rather than admitting we created our own anger. As McKay and Maybell (2004) note, guilt often accompanies anger. This is particularly so when one thinks that he or she should not be angry. "Anger expresses good intentions that we really don't have." McCay and Maybell suggest that we either "do wrong or feel guilty, but don't do both because it's too much work!"

the act of irritating or exciting. the state of being annoyed. stimulation, usually of an undue and uncomfortable kind; especially excitment of anger or passion; provocation. a sudden outburst of anger. an uncomfortable feeling of mental painfulness or distress. unfriendly behavior that causes anger or resentment. the act of troubling someone.

So, with all the insane amount of new CC I have collected in the past year, it was time for a make-over of my baby, Lucas (a.k.a. Shadow).

Now I know I've been pretty much gone from Flickr and the community in general and for that I apologize. I have just been fairly busy and going through a bit of a rough patch in just about all fields of life. For example, I spent a week in bed recovering from Swine-flu, which I swear I caught as Karma for mocking the over-dramatisation the media is making of the pandemic (which I STILL think is exagerated).

Also, well I will admit in selfishness and a bit of childish resentment after trying so, so hard to host a contest for the new sim editors. I thought there was a big demand for the new editors so I made something that would involve them learning as they go and make it not too harsh and closed away from the more experimented editors. But nearly no one is joining and I spent hours upon hours making tutorials and figuring out the best ways to teach techniques I myself haven't even fully mastered. Bugging people for advice and how to better explain it and bla bla bla...

I guess I just don't like the sensation of waisting my time. I must say thank you to those who did join and I'll still run it through the end for you guys 'cause yeah, if you joined I assumed it's because you want to improve. Would be mean to just drop it like that.

Anyways... there is also that editing hasn't really appealled. In the most everything I see seemed to be stuff that was already done before... or focused on female fashion which, if you saw my wardrobe, you'd understand I'm not grasping AT ALL. XD Me and fashion never got along (with the exception of shoe stores... you can never have too many shoes x_x .... or sweaters... I have 2-3 sweaters lying around in every room AND at work, but I digress)

I did find something lately for me to edit, which I am currently working on and have more time which nicely fit my crazy schedule without taking away from my writting time. And it needed of Lucas and so, he was due for a re-making. Voilà! Much improved I find! His face is not round enough but with the skins it looks weird if I try ><'

The CC is not mine and no, I dunno where each little piece comes from, unless you want a ridiculous answer, which in this case: all my cc comes from Bodyshop. HAHA -_-

Sorry, I enjoy my own lame jokes. Sad, I know :P

Hum, well not sure how to close this low rant/description/weirdness so...

In my wanderings around Leith, I often end up in the rather picturesque kirkyard of South Leith Parish Church. The area around the church is a little blast of greenery and trees, the grounds being hemmed in by a shopping centre, blocks of flats and the new tramline running down from Edinburgh. It is a little oasis to lots of birds, small creatures, and insects, who utilise everything from the plants and trees to the gravestones. Of course, though I enjoy it, I don’t really go there for the nature, like any good graveyard ghoul, I go there for the gravestones and the stories they tell.

The graveyard used to be much larger, but part of it is now under Constitution Street, the road that runs past it and on which the trams run. When they were constructing the tram lines, they had to dig up the road, and while it was an open pit, a group of archaeologists worked there to remove all the bones of those buried there. You could quite often walk past and see several rather well preserved skeletons lying there as the work was carried out. They were quite a talking point and on social media there were many comments about how many of these skeletons seemed to have a full set of lovely white teeth. Something many of those living nearby do not have. It was soon pointed out though that the skeletons dated from around the 16th Century, a time when sugar was not in such abundance and that anyway most of the skeletons were from people who were probably in their early to mid-twenties when they died. The skeletons were also quite popular with local children, and I remember passing by a young woman with a screaming toddler who calmed down when she told him that if he behaved, they would walk home past the skeletons, and she’d lift him up so he could see them.

Being an old maritime town many of those buried in the graveyard worked on the ships, were ship builders, sailors or merchants utilising the shipping for their businesses. One of the gravestones there carries on it a memorial to one of the sons of James Kinghorn and Agnes Anderson. This being William Anderson Kinghorn, the Chief Engineer on the SS Esparto, who was drowned in the English Channel on 28 November 1897.

The SS Esparto was a cargo steamship built by S H Morton and Co at Victoria Dock in Leith for the London and Edinburgh Shipping Company. It was launched on the 20 September 1880. On Thursday 25 November 1897 it set off from Bo’ness to sail to Barcelona with a cargo of coal. On the night of Sunday 28 November, the ship was passing through the English Channel, by the Royal Sovereign Lightship near to Hastings, when it was involved in a collision with the French steamship, the Noel. It would appear that in heavy seas the two ships came across each other and through errors in signalling they embarked on a course that led them directly into each other’s path. The Esparto was hit midship by the Noel and was almost cut in two. Water flooded into the ship, but most of those below decks managed to scramble up and some made it onto the deck of the Noel. However, just as the First Mate shouted over to the crew of the Noel to try and hold their ship so the rest of his crew could get aboard, the rough seas pulled it out and away from the Esparto. The Esparto then capsized and within five minutes had sunk. Two of the Esparto’s crew who had made it on to the Noel, took out one of the lifeboats from that ship and rescued several of their crew members who had been thrown into the sea. Meanwhile the Captain, William Kinghorn and another member of the crew managed to get into a lifeboat from the Esparto and for a short while thought they were all saved. But then the rough seas overturned the boat, and all three were cast into the churning waters. The Captain managed to grab onto some wreckage from the Esparto and was saved by a passing ship. Unfortunately, Kinghorn and the other crew member were not so lucky, and both drowned in the freezing and stormy sea. Of the nineteen people onboard the ship, fourteen were rescued but five drowned. Their bodies were never recovered.

An enquiry was held into the sinking of the ship, and it concluded that the accident had been caused due to errors made by the mate of the Esparto in signalling and pulling astern from the Noel when this was not necessary and by the fact that ‘neither of the vessels kept on her course’.

There are also some tragic tales to be had amongst the surviving gravestones. There is the grieving wail from the past that is the inscription for James Paton, a merchant in London who died in Leith in 1787. On his headstone is carved a lament from his grieving widow to a man who was a loving father to his young children and who had brought much happiness to her.

One of the gravestones that intrigued me was that of Martha Watt, who died on 2 May 1901 and whose inscription states that she was accidentally drowned. I found the word ‘accidentally’ somewhat strange as it almost implied that it may not have been an accident. Why the emphasis? Well, it turns out that poor Martha threw herself into Dunsapie Loch in Holyrood Park and drowned herself despite a passer-by trying to save her. However, the Procurator Fiscal’s Office ruled her death accidental, which suggests that they found that she was ‘not of sound mind’ when she did this. Given the stigma surrounding suicide at that time the ‘accidentally’ on her gravestone serves to hit this home to all the gossips that it was not a deliberate act by her.

Many of those buried here lie in unmarked graves and their tales and stories and now lost to us. However, somewhere within the grounds of the graveyard lie the bodies of three men and their story is well documented. Their tale is one of revenge, bigotry, hate and ultimately of judicial murder and it all started with a Scottish company.

In 1695 The Company of Scotland was created and granted a monopoly of Scottish trade to India, Africa, and the Americas. The company played a large role in the ill-fated Darien scheme, in which an attempt was made to establish a colony in Panama. This all went wrong and failed due to poor planning, the death of most of the colonists from tropical diseases, a trade blockade carried out by England and an aggressive military response by the Spanish. The failure of this scheme and the fact that it had almost bankrupted Scotland, led to huge resentment and anger with England, who many believed had been responsible for causing the failure. Something the Secretary of the Company of Scotland, Roderick MacKenzie, was only too happy to have people believe, as it took any responsibility for the failure away from him and his colleagues.

In 1704, the Annandale, a ship chartered by The Company of Scotland was impounded in the Thames by the English authorities. The captain of the ship was accused of trying to hire English sailors in London, which was a breach of the East India Company’s monopoly. The ship was eventually seized along with all the goods on board and the ship’s crew were pressed into the service of the English Navy. This didn’t go down well back in Scotland and really annoyed many of the merchants and politicians, as it was basically the final nail in the coffin of The Company of Scotland. Around six months later an English merchant ship, the Worcester, was returning from the East Indies loaded up with a full cargo. In order to avoid a storm, it put in at the Firth of Forth. There, it was seized in an act of reprisal by the Scottish authorities at the behest of Roderick MacKenzie.

At around the same time the Worcester was seized, concern was growing in Edinburgh over another Scottish ship, the Speedy Return, which, not living up to its name, had not returned to port and was assumed to be lost. Rumours soon spread that the captain and crew of the Worcester were responsible for the loss of the Speedy Return. Given these rumours Captain Thomas Green of the Worcester, and his crew, were all detained and imprisoned.

The ship’s cook, Antonio Ferdinando, who is described as coming from Malabar in India, though may have actually been an enslaved African, then made a statement against Captain Green and the crew, stating that off the coast of Calicut in India, they had attacked a ship of English speaking men and had killed them, stolen the goods from the ship, and then sold the ship. However, it would appear that Ferdinando had not actually joined the ship until after it had sailed past Calicut, so he could not have witnessed any of this. His statement against the crew may therefore have been due to an understandable grudge against them.

However, that aside, in March 1705 Captain Green and his crew went on trial at an Admiralty Court in Edinburgh on charges of piracy, robbery and murder. The indictment against them was kept vague and did not specify which ship it was that they were supposed to have attacked or the date they were supposed to have attacked it. None of the owners of the Speedy return or family members of the crew were asked to give evidence. The crew of the Worcester were not allowed to give evidence in their defence, though Ferdinando was allowed to give evidence against them, and vital evidence that would have shown that they did not carry out an attack on the Speedy Return was not considered by the court. This evidence being that two members of the crew of the Speedy Return had made it back to England where they had signed statements to the fact that their ship had been seized off the Madagascar Coast by a gang of pirates led by a Captain John Bowen. It would appear the Captain of the Speedy Return had been negotiating the purchase of a group of slaves from Bowen but had been double crossed by him. Realising he had been duped and lost his ship, the Captain had gone to seek his fortune elsewhere rather than returning to Scotland to face the wrath of the ship owners. He had left his crew stranded in a foreign land from which they had to find their own way home. And why was this evidence not considered? Well, it was because the indictment against them didn’t actually mention the Speedy Return, as its vagueness was really just a ploy to ensure a guilty verdict, such was the anti-English sentiment at the time. As the historian George M Trevelyan put it, the court was ‘drunk with patriotic prejudice.’

So, as expected, Captain Green and sixteen members of his crew were found guilty and sentenced to death. Captain Green, his Chief Mate, John Madder, and the ship’s gunner, James Simpson, were all sentenced to hang on the 4th of April 1705, while the rest of the crew were to be executed in two groups on the 11th and 18th of April.

There was much consternation in England about the trial and the sentence imposed upon Green and his crew. Queen Ann intervened and asked for a stay of execution so the matter could be considered properly by her ministers. This was granted until the 11th of April, but then on the 11th a huge and angry crowd gathered in Edinburgh demanding that justice be carried out for the murdered crew of the Speedy Return. The Lord Chancellor was spotted by the mob and dragged out of his coach, only escaping the angry crowd by promising that the executions would go ahead. So later that day Green, Madder and Simpson were put in a cart and transported through a baying mob to Leith Sands. There, all three made final speeches declaring their innocence, before being hanged. Unusually though, rather than being left to hang in chains like the bodies of most convicted pirates, all three were quickly cut down and taken to South Leith Parish Church and buried in the graveyard there. Not long after this the rest of the crew were discreetly released, the anger of the mob having been abated by a blood sacrifice.

Only a few years later, in 1707, the Act of Union and the joining of England and Scotland resulted in closure of The Company of Scotland and compensation being given to the merchants and nobles who had lost so much of their cash. The deaths of Green and his two other crew members were quickly forgotten, as was the Speedy Return.

Wandering around the graveyard I bumped into several groups of tourists taking in the sites of Leith. As they admired the many ornate and ancient gravestones I walked around to the crypts. There amongst the capering squirrels and fat pigeons I came across a small group of men that you often find in inner city graveyards, scruffy looking and very drunk. Empty cans of cheap cider were scattered around them as they shouted and laughed noisily at each other. Walking past them through the crypts I found another group sitting quietly in the grass looking completely out of it. Around them lay the detritus of their addiction, bloody tissues, swabs and syringes. One of the guys looked up at me vacantly and managed a smile. I smiled back, said hello, and headed away out into the warmth of the summer sun.

As I walked through the graveyard, I found a bit of wall that at one time must have been part of something but now was just a lone piece of wall with some gravestones attached to it. There, in a gap, I left the Skulferatu that had accompanied me.

LIBYA Benghazi -- 14 May 2011 -- Since the Libyan revolution began in many of the liberated towns public artwork dipicting Colonal Gaddafi has began to appear like this image in Benghazi Libya. This graffiti - attributed to a student group known as the FRU - says: Be patriotic, kill a Turk. "Turco" is a reference to the Middle Eastern immigrants to Central American that came with little, but built successful businesses. Their success has been a source of resentment - especially with some in the "Resistance" that backs ousted president Manuel Zelaya.

I found this guy's story pretty interesting. He irregularly sits kitty-corner from the dealership (Viking Dodge) with whom he has a resentment.

Except for the Zuo Residence and a handful of similarly old houses everything on the block is rubble and rubbish. The site is used as the sorting grounds by a bunch of scavengers and rag pickers. They proved to be a friendly and tactful team - smiled and chatted a bit, but minded their own business and let us mind our own. In fact, all the resentment and ''Ganma?" we get comes from valets, guards and other flunkies in French Concession.

Nearby bus stop is called just this, Zuo Jia Zhai - is this an indication that's it's well-known and there a chance it won't be demolished entirely?

Dividing the Estate, a sardonic comedy by Pulitzer Prize winner author, Horton Foote

Once a family of comfortable wealth, the Gordon’s now find themselves facing a looming financial crisis. The only asset left is the family’s Texas estate but matriarch Stella is determined not to divide the 100 year old property. Her three children have other ideas and set out to convince Stella to go with their plan and come into some money. Old resentments and sibling rivalries surface as the members of this quirky, dysfunctional family connive to see who will claim the biggest piece of the pie in Dividing the Estate.

"America’s Firm Resolve to End Childhood Abuse and Neglect”

This horse galloped into the paddock after a long ride at the end of a hot day.

First, it tried to cool off by rolling in the sand, then headed to the farm shed - but the farm dog chased it out again.

The horse got agitated and started a set of exercises to show its discontent and resentment.

Stamping on the ground fiercely it raised a cloud of dust, capturing the afternoon sun sneaking in through the trees and creating the perfect setting for this series of photos.

Espacially the central part of the Morroco pavillion was very beautifully made. There are more displays about life and business of Morocco in the surrounding hallways to the resentment of the Chinese who just wanted to hunt for the passport stamp but had to run a sign-posted route all the way to the end ;)

Lately weeks of strikes and outbursts of rioting on Guadeloupe and nearby Martinique have disrupted the Caribbean calm. The world economic crisis is pushing up prices of staples that already cost more than on the French mainland, and reviving the resentment of the mixed-race majority toward the descendants of slave-owners and white colonists who still run much of the islands' economies. For French President Nicolas Sarkozy, already unpopular, the Caribbean unrest is a big challenge. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa, File)

Französisch Buchholz in the Berlin borough of Pankow, is a district that developed from an earlier settlement in the 13th century and became known as Buchholz. It got its current name because numerous Huguenot families, religious refugees from France, settled here at the end of the 17th century.

By about 1750, the name Französisch Buchholz had become established and the village had become a popular destination for Berliner day trippers.

Because of anti-French resentment in the run-up to the First World War, the district changed its name to Berlin-Buchholz in 1913 and was incorporated into Greater Berlin in 1920.

At the end of the Second World War, Buchholz became part of the Soviet sector of Berlin. After reunification and with some local pressure, the district became Französisch Buchholz again on 30th May 1999, thus after 86 years, regaining its former name.

Gerasa's fortunes were not surprisingly, attached to those of Rome. Civil disorder in Rome in the 190s heralded the end of the boom years. Taxation was increased to help pay for the greater military expenditure in Rome, which fuelled both resentment and crippling inflation. The Persian Sassanians started whittling away at the eastern flank of the empire.

In 324, Christianity became the official religion. From this time on, through the fifth and sixth centuries, dozens of churches went up, but after the ordered Roman style of building, the Byzantine church building was a haphazard affair, using plunderer stone from wherever it could be obtained. By the late 7th century, the city was literally crumbling under the twin blows of shoddy workmanship and lack of maintenance. At one point, even the water supply to the city failed.

After the Muslim victory over the Byzantines in 636 (when the name was arabized to Jerash, the city city slipped into obscurity, although a recently discovered mosque from that period demonstrates that there was still some activity here until the cataclysmic earthquake of 749 finally brought the city to its knees and it lay deserted for 1000 years.

When routine bites hard

And ambitions are low

And resentment rides high

A reservation of land made under an Empresario contract by the Republic of Texas, 1841. Its purpose was to introduce colonists into this area. Under the first of four contracts, W. S. Peters and 19 partners agreed to introduce 600 families in three years, to furnish each with seed, shot, and a cabin, and also to survey the land. Each family was to receive 640 acres of land free and each single man, 320 acres. Of this, the company could take half for its services. Three later contracts altered terms somewhat, and although the land company underwent several internal upheavals, by 1848 there were approximately 1,800 colonists and their families in the area. Resentment over the company's share of land climaxed in 1852 when settlers drove out the unpopular agent, Henry O. Hedgcoxe, in the so-called "Hedgcoxe War." Because of its success in opening a large area of the frontier and its later effect on Texas land and immigration policy, the law establishing this colony was one of the most important in the Republic. In spite of unusual tumult and hardship, the final Peters Colony area today extends over five counties and encompasses one-fourth of the state's population, including its largest combined metropolitan area. (1970)

"America’s Firm Resolve to End Childhood Abuse and Neglect”

Broderick–Terry duel happened adjacent to Lake Merced was fought between United States Senator David C. Broderick, of California, and ex-Chief Justice David S. Terry, of the Supreme Court of California, on September 13, 1859.

The two men had been friends and political allies, however Broderick was an abolitionist, whereas Terry was pro - slavery.

Intense political disagreements led to bitter resentments, which in turn led to a challenge to a duel and the fatal encounter.

The chosen weapons were two #Belgian .58 #caliber #pistols .

#Broderick was #unfamiliar with this type of #gun #mechanism, while #Terry, in contrast, spent the previous days #practicing with this #gun

The palace was robbed by The Eight-Nation Alliance in 1900. This gold plated water tank was scraped by soldiers of the Alliance. Here you see the marks left by their bayonets.

So when I read about the "lingering resentment over past wrongs", I wonder: Have we Chinese dwelt upon the past for too long? Or are we badly misunderstood, even by those who claim to know us?

Anyway, I believe it is much easier for one not to linger in the past when there is not much past to linger on, or the past is something one would rather nobody remembers.

The growing interconnectedness of everyone and everything is transforming our world into an unprecedented techno-social environment. The boundaries between atmosphere and politics are being suspended; already, tiny ruptures can cause cascade-like repercussions – think of cyber-attacks or stock market crashes, right-wing resentment or hashtag-based protest. Such ambient revolts are increasingly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) – involving human interaction but seemingly beyond human oversight. Set against this backdrop, the conference poses the questions: What are the techno-social logics of both regressive and repressive tendencies? What are emancipatory movements up against? What potential do micro-political acts have in day-to-day life? What regulations of automated systems at the macro level will enable democracy to emerge in the age of AI? The Berliner Gazette conference will explore these questions in the context of performances, lectures and workshops.

Three itty bitty peridot briolettes are wrapped and hung in front of a 7/8 silver disc reading “one day at a time.” I have a lot of thanks to give to AA for helping loved ones stay sober. Also great as a raffle prize at banquets, “birthday” gift, or a little present to a very dedicated sponsor.

Of course, you don’t have to be in recovery of some sort or any sort to wear this affirmation. Taking things one day at a time is a universal message and reminder to not panic over the future. I can’t be the only anxiety-ridden worrier out there, right?

Peridot is a great stone for those in recovery from substance addiction. It is said to help purify body, mind, and spirit by helping us release guilt, obsessions, and burdens that are no longer of use or counterproductive to our life. It teaches us to detach from outer influences and look within ourselves for guidance. It helps us learn our spiritual lessons, and move away from old habits that could be harmful to us. It can show us how to forgive ourselves and alleviates jealousy, anger, resentment, and spite we might have towards others. (This is my statement saying this is not meant to give medical advice. I am not suggesting this as a cure or treatment for any illness or condition, though I have a personal belief that stones can indeed help aid in healing.)

Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind...

There is something disturbing about all depictions of animals who have intelligence superior to or at least on a par with human capacities. I mean if Skippy or Flipper really can detect the potential dangers of a given life situation and then go and get the right person for the job of dealing with it (or even deal with it themselves) what are they thinking normally? It can't just be crsis that suddenly elevates their intellects to such brilliance. They have to be constantly judging everyone they see, from the cruel ones who don't bother to hide their resentment of these dumb beasts who could show them up at any moment, to the patronising ones who offer morsels of unappetising vet-recommended combat rations with needless, gibbering encouragements. All the time these finned or furry "friends" would be aware that they effectively held captives in a vicious circle of dependency, trapped for their criminally short lives to barked commands or crushing humiliation through the performance of tricks or that bland muscle-building garbage they get offered in the name of food. I would think just that except that I loved Skippy. I really did think he was a friend ever true, as the theme song had it (the bit about him being a bush kangaroo was, of course, not negotiable). Not only could he do all but actually fly the helicopter (though I bet the writers tried to make a case for that) in the service of humanity but his appearance on the small screen also brought the image of the blond girl who embodied the rewards of studied boyhood, one of the gleams of girlhood whom the angels named Clancy. Sigh. You know, had I voiced any of this at the time I would have been teased for craving girl germs. If I watched a rerun now and breathed a word of it, I'd be a dirty old man. Oh Clancy, Clancy, we were destined never to cross and my heart is forever a little arid knowing it. Sigh. Well, at least Clancy's golden visage was always accompanied by Skippy who could save me from the worst of days. Skippy was a hero and the same goes for Flipper, Gentle Ben, My Friend Flicka and Lassie. Heroes all, I salute you. Anyway, this is my cat Brass who happened to be dozing near the microphone I'd set up to record the guitar I wasplaying through amp in the background. Enjoy.

O what has become of Millicent Frastley?

Is there any hope that she's still alive?

Why haven't they found her? It's rather ghastly

To think that the child was not yet five.

The dear little thing was last seen playing

Along by herself at the edge of the park;

There was no one with her to keep her from straying

Away in the shadows and oncoming dark.

Before she could do so, a silent and glittering

Black motor drew up where she sat nibbling grass;

From within came a nearly inaudible twittering,

A tiny green face peered out through the glass.

She was ready to flee, when the figure beckoned;

An arm with two elbows held out a tin

Full of cinnamon balls; she paused; a second

Reached out as she took one, and lifted her in.

The nurse was discovered collapsed in some shrubbery,

But her reappearance was not much use;

Her eyes were askew, her extremities rubbery,

Her clothing was stained with a brownish juice.

She was questioned in hopes of her answers revealing

What had happened; she merely repeatedly said

'I hear them walking about on the ceiling'.

She had gone irretrievably out of her head.

O feelings of horror, resentment, and pity

For things, which so seldom turn out for the best;

The car, unobserved, sped away from the city

As the last of the light died out in the west.

The Frastleys grew sick with apprehension,

Which a heavy tea only served to increase;

Though they felt it was scarcely genteel to mention

The loss of their child, they called in the police.

Through unvisited hamlets the car went creeping,

With its head lamps unlit and its curtains drawn;

Those natives who happened not to be sleeping

Heard it pass, and lay awake until dawn.

The police with their torches and notebooks descended

On the haunts of the underworld, looking for clues;

In spite of their praiseworthy efforts, they ended

With nothing at all in the way of news.

The car, after hours and hours of travel,

Arrived at a gate in an endless wall;

It rolled up a drive and stopped on the gravel

At the foot of a vast and crumbling hall.

As the night wore away, hope started to languish

And soon was replaced by all manner of fears;

The family twisted their fingers in anguish,

Or got them all damp from the flow of their tears.

They removed the child to the ball-room, whose hangings

And mirrors were streaked with a luminous slime;

They leapt through the air with buzzings and twangings

To work themselves up to a ritual crime.

They stunned her, and stripped off her garments, and lastly

They stuffed her inside a kind of a pod;

And then it was that Millicent Frastley

Was sacrificed to The Insect God.
