Found this what looks like a stern or a small gull at the salt marsh (see map for location) on August 22 this year.

I searched a bit in Sibley's Guide and it "could be" a stern ... ??
Or a closeness to a Franklin Gull??

Un Ninot es una figura con apariencia humana. Son figuras que normalmente se situan en la base del monumento fogueril, con caracter de crítica o burla. Hay dos categorías: ninot infantil y ninot(grande).
Antes de comenzar las Hogueras de San Juan se realiza la Exposición del Ninot, donde todas las Comisiones de Hogueras aportan un Ninot, de cada categoría, de su monumento, para que el público elija "el ninot indultat", que será la figura que se salvará del fuego. Antes los ninots se fabricaban con cartón, pero actualmente el corcho blanco es bastante común.

The Ninot is a figure with human appearance. They are figures that usually are placed, with critic character or mockery, at the base of the monument(Hoguera). There are two categories of ninots: ninot infantile and ninot(big).
The Exhibition of Ninots is realised before the beginning of the festival "Fogueres de Sant Joan"; all the Commissions contribute with two Ninot, infantile and big. People choose a Ninot, for each category, to grant a pardon; the Ninot winner is "El ninot indultat"(Ninot pardoned), and it's going to be the figure that will be saved of the fire.
Before, most of the Ninots were making with papier mâché, but nowadays the white foam is so common.

The last five months (May-September 2023) required me to move a lot for a variety of professional and personal reasons. It was the first time in several years that I entered airplanes without carrying my DSLR camera. This resulted in me tinkering and thinking with my mobile phone camera, surpassing my snobbish attitude towards it as means of photographic expression. Visiting an old favourite antique store of mine, I was exposed to wallet-sized black and white pictures, very fashionable in the 1920s-1960s. Phenomenologically, I thought, these little pictures carried significance similar to the one carried by the myriads of photos nowadays stored on mobile phones. I tried to combine the sensory experience of black and white with the ease of mobile phone shooting, itself resembling certain types of pinhole cameras. Themes are the same as in my earlier photography: decayed and rusty patterns of disintegration, emptiness of spaces, outlier figures of the everyday, street signs and letters, nonhuman friends, naturecultures, and psychopolitically haunted scenes. Places include: Canada (Toronto), Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Aghia, Larissa, Eleftheroupoli, Kavala), Scotland (Edinburgh), France (Paris), Belgium (Brussels).

As you may recall, Cullman Today in conjunction with the Worthless Check Unit of the Office of District Attorney C. Wilson Blaylock and the Cullman Police Department issued a community-wide crime alert for a black female believed to be in her mid-thirties who had been on a crime spree in late 2016.
The person of interest was officially known as:
Demetria Dunn
Dunn had 219 known criminal charges on her record. She also has 16 known outstanding warrants against her in Cullman County alone. She was alleged to have been passing countless bogus checks throughout the City of Cullman and portions of Cullman County and beyond into other jurisdictions around Christmas time.

Most of Demetria Dunn’s charges involve two main areas of criminal activity:

At the time of the community-wide crime alert, she was also in violation of probation in Cullman County for convictions linked to previous crimes. She has been imprisoned for similar charges in the past. An open bench warrant was in place for her arrest.
At the time, Beth Richards of the District Attorney’s Worthless Check Unit called Dunn a ‘super persuasive, highly intelligent, charismatic, and very conscious bad check artist’.
Within 12 hours of the issuance, the crime alert paid dividends
Following a lead generated by the joint community crime watch announcement, a citizen tipster in Blount County responded to the public request for determining the whereabouts of Dunn.
Calling Blount County 9-1-1, the caller indicated that an individual matching the description of Dunn was likely at the Jack’s Family Restaurant on Alabama Highway 79 in Locust Fork. A Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy aware of the community crime watch announcement immediately responded to the call. Arriving at the location, the deputy arrived at Jack’s finding Dunn inside.
Demetria Dunn was promptly arrested.

After being booked in Blount County, Demetria Dunn was then transferred to the Cullman County Detention Center where she remained with NO BOND until her court date and subsequent sentencing.
After the arrest, Officer Cindy Rohrscheib with the Cullman Police Department said:
“The really good news is Dunn is now off the streets where she can longer steal from people. If it weren’t for the community crime watch announcement, she’d almost certainly still be on the streets victimizing merchants ahead of the Christmas holiday. I greatly appreciate the concern and proactive response by the many citizens who came forward since the story and announcement last night. This is a great example of the media, citizens and law enforcement agencies working in cooperation to take bad folks off the streets.”

On the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Demetria Dun was transported from the Cullman County Detention Center in shackles to appear before The Honorable Wells Turner, III District Judge.
In a plea agreement reached between Judge Turner and Dunn’s court appointed attorney Joshua O’Neal, Demetria Dunn pleaded GUILTY to 16 separate charges of Negotiating A Worthless Instrument in violation of Alabama Code 13A-9-13.
Judge Turner sentenced her to 12 months in the Cullman County Jail (suspended) placing her on probation for a period of 24 months. She was also required to pay FULL restitution to each of the 16 victims of her crimes as well as the following fees for each charge:
• $30 merchant fees
• $176 Worthless Check Unit Service Charge
• All Court Costs with 85% going for use in law enforcement,
• $21 Solicitors Fee
• $25 Crime Victims Compensation Fee
In the same court appearance, Judge Turner signed an Order of Commitment To Jail. This order imprisons Demetria Dunn to 12 months in the Cullman County Detention Center – effective immediately.

This imprisonment was tied to a similar arrest/charge early in 2016 where Dunn passed a bogus check with Pizza Hut in the amount of $27.08 and received a motion from the court to revoke her probation.
Jeff Roberts, Cullman Assistant District Attorney, weighed in on the Dunn cases after sentencing was handed down:
“Ms. Dunn had previously been arrested and plead guilty to multiple worthless check cases in Cullman County, but continued writing bad checks, not only here, but in several other counties. It has been and will always be the policy of this office to work with someone who makes the mistake of writing bad checks one time. It is also our policy to place people in jail who willfully continue to write bad checks, in order to protect our merchants and citizens from further loss.”
Dunn has charges pending in at least twelve other Counties and/or jurisdictions across north and central Alabama.
It is generally believed that when she finishes her 12-month sentence at the Cullman County Detention Center, law enforcement agencies in those jurisdictions will immediately wish to interview Dunn on those additional warrants/charges with further arrests, sentencing, and imprisonment possible.
Beth Richards, Cullman Worthless Check Unit Coordinator, was pleased with the process that led to Dunn’s arrest and the outcome of her legal process:
“We really appreciate how quickly this story went out into the community and the huge response it generated. The people who shared the article and those who gave tips to law enforcement about locating Ms. Dunn have our gratitude.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chance Nkosi Gomez known initiated by H.H Swami Jyotirmayanda as Sri Govinda walks an integral yogic path in which photography is the primary creative field of expression. The medium was introduced during sophomore year of high school by educator Dr. Devin Marsh of Robert Morgan Educational Center. Coming into alignment with light, its nature and articulating the camera was the focus during that time. Thereafter while completing a Photographic Technology Degree, the realization of what made an image “striking” came to the foreground of the inner dialogue. These college years brought forth major absorption and reflection as an apprentice to photographer and educator Tony A. Chirinos of Miami Dade College. The process of working towards a singular idea of interest and thus building a series became the heading from here on while the camera aided in cultivating an adherence to the present moment. The viewfinder resembles a doorway to the unified field of consciousness in which line, shape, form, color, value, texture all dissolve. It is here that the yogi is reminded of sat-chit-ananda (the supreme reality as all-pervading; pure consciousness). As of May 2024 Govinda has completed his 300hr yoga teacher training program at Sattva Yoga Academy studying from Master Yogi Anand Mehrotra in Rishikesh, India, Himalayas. This has strengthened his personal Sadhana and allows one to carry and share ancient Vedic Technology leading others in ultimately directing their intellect to bloom into intuition. As awareness and self-realization grows so does the imagery that is all at once divine in the mastery of capturing and controlling light. Over the last seven years he has self-published six photographic books, Follow me i’ll be right behind you (2017), Sonata - Minimal Study (2018), Birds Singing Lies (2018), Rwanda (2019), Where does the body begin? (2019) & Swayam Jyotis (2023). Currently, Govinda is employed at the Leica Store Miami as a camera specialist and starting his journey as a practitioner of yoga ॐ

The Wessex was a turbine-powered development of the American Sikorsky S58. The initial production version was for the Royal Navy but in the early 1960s the RAF required a powerful general-purpose helicopter capable of troop-carrying, air ambulance and ground attack roles. Westland responded with the Wessex HC2 which first entered RAF service with No.18 Squadron, based at RAF Odiham, Hampshire, in January 1964.
Four years later Westland Helicopters received an order for two Wessex aircraft to equip The Queen's Flight. These were designated HCC4. The aircraft were built to HC2 standard but with the main cabin having a VIP interior finish, furnishings and sound proofing plus an external folding step below the cabin door. Additional Decca navigation equipment was installed on the flight deck. The first flight took place on 17 March 1969. The first official flight was on 1 July 1969 in support of the Investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle, Wales. The helicopters in their distinctive red/dark blue paint scheme operated for many years from RAF Benson. From 31 March 1995 they moved to RAF Northolt and became part of No.32 (The Royal) Squadron.
The Wessex HCC4 was retired in 1998.

This technique requires a special method of pouring, it can use Smithwicks, Harp or cider as the tan and of course Guinness as the black. By skilled pourers it can be done at the tap, otherwise a spoon is used to diffuse the pour. The Guinness floats on top because it uses a nitrogen based gas to create the head rather than carbon dioxide which is heavier.
Can anyone help we are looking for 2 of these brake bleed screws, they are 12ml thread and have a very unusual end.

The Disaster
On the evening of 25th October 1960 a number of barges were making their way up river from Avonmouth to Sharpness. Amongst them were two vessels operated by John Harker Ltd. of Knottingley, Yorkshire. The WASTDALE H had been built locally at Sharpness Shipyard in 1951. She was a tanker barge and was carrying a load of petroleum. The ARKENDALE H had been built by Richards Ironworks of Lowestoft in 1937 as a dumb (unpowered) tanker barge. She had been converted to a motor barge in 1948 and was later lengthened. Her cargo was Britoleum black oil, a heavy oil which required her to be fitted with heating coils in her tanks to keep the oil liquid.
The barges hit thick fog near Berkeley Power Station and the strong incoming tide was running at 5 knots making it difficult to manoeuvre the vessels for their approach to the lock at Sharpness. Both barges were swept past the lock entrance and the found themselves by the old, disused dock entrance further upstream. The two barges came abreast and the skippers found it impossible to separate them. Whilst they struggled to break them apart they drifted yet further upstream until the port bow of the WASTDALE H hit pier 17 of the bridge. The bridge shook with the impact and the WASTDALE H turned onto her port side and began to sink. As pier 17 gave way under the pressure the two spans it supported fell onto the barges causing the WASTDALE H’s petroleum cargo to ignite and explode. The ARKENDALE H’s cargo of black oil was also ruptured and with the help of the petroleum it too ignited leaving the entire expanse of the river blazing. The two barges drifted on up river before grounding on the Ridge Sandbank. Skipper George Thompson of the ARKENDALE H managed to make it ashore. His engineer Jack Cooper also survived but not before he received a severe back injury sustained by an encounter with the still-rotating propeller of the sinking ARKENDALE H. Skipper James Dew of the WASTDALE H was the only other survivor. The other five crew members were missing.
The next morning the smouldering wrecks of the two barges were left high and dry on the sand with the WASTDALE H standing on her port side. On the following tide she settled back to en even keel. Attempts were made to pump out and search both vessels for the missing crew members but their inaccessible position made the job difficult. All five bodies were later found at various locations along the Severn. On 30th October 1960 the Army blew holes in the bow and stern of both barges to prevent them refloating. They remain there to this day, submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide.
On the night of the disaster the Fairfields workers engaged on the strengthening of the bridge decided to take an early meal break in order to listen to the Henry Cooper v Karl Muller boxing match on the wireless at Severn Bridge Station. Had they not done so the death toll would have been considerably worse as the span they were working on was one of the two that fell.
Within a month of the disaster the Western Region of British Railways had prepared an outline plan to repair the bridge. Pier 16 would be repaired and a new concrete pier would be constructed to replace pier 17. A single, welded mild steel span would then be placed across the top, supported in the middle by the new pier. The projected cost for this was £85,000.
It was found that pier 16 was significantly damaged and was leaning towards the Sharpness bank. It was therefore decided to erect a timber trestle beneath span 15-16 and the contract to do this was awarded to Peter Lind & Co. Ltd.
The bridge suffered further mishap on 17th February 1961 when the tanker barge BP EXPLORER capsized and struck pier 20 causing a further £12,740 worth of damage.
Peter Lind & Co. Ltd. hired the twin floating crane TWEEDLEDUM & TWEEDLEDEE to assist with the erection of the trestle. On the 14th April 1961 the TWEEDLEDUM & TWEEDLEDEE broke away from its moorings on a flood tide and drifted into the bridge damaging the dolphins on pier 20. The crane jib also struck the underside of the bridge. This time the damage was estimated at £6,000."
The Electronics still require a lot of work before they're complete, it's definitely keeping my Dad busy. While he's been working on the code and hardware, I fitted all the components I could; IR receiver, proper cabling and one out of two speakers. It doesn't sound too shabby at the moment, and it's only going to get better.....

- Escalation of training and intensity will vary depending on number of students and their skill level though the core of the course will always remain the same

This sign was uncovered last week from under a facade. I have no idea how long the facade had been intact... twenty, thirty years? This building had been, at one time, an X-Rated movie house on 8 Mile at Wyoming. This morning the light was perfect, right as the sun broke the horizon. I made a u-turn and scampered back post-haste to shoot.
As for the fate of the sign, who knows. It could stay this way for years or it could be gone tomorrow. I have learned from experience never to pass up a shot of a relic, you know?
**UPDATE 1/19/10 - Well, the letters have already started disappearing from the sign. The L from the east side and the LA from the west side.
**UPDATE 8/18/10 - Building demolished. Sign gone. That, as they say, is that.
Myles getting his new leash and collar plus a bed, toys and treats. It cost $250 to adopt him, but we will get $100 back after attending training. He has all his shots and has been dewormed and we get a free vet visit to make sure there were no ill effects from his stay here.
