Aussie require a lot of exercise and they don't care what the weather is doing or how dry or muddy the yard is! After a particularly few days of rainy weather that left the yard saturated and with some standing water in spots, it was just right for the first annual 'Aussie Mud Bowl!"
Roxy & JJ were quite pleased with themselves too!
FYI, the score was a tie and they want a re-match!
Ironmaking blast furnaces require large amounts of air to be blown into the bottom of the furnace to intensify the combustion, the same way a blacksmiths forge needs air blown into it to make it hotter. That air blast, probably 40,000 CFM at around 25 psi, was provided originally by blowing engines. These were injected with natural gas and the large flywheels supplied kinetic energy. These were also used to generate electricity. These engines were in constant operation for almost 100 years except for when they were shut down for routine maintenance. If anyone has more information on these engines, I would be happy to hear from you. For a sense of the size of these engines, check out the stairs along the right side.
Today, I am told, steel mills use turbo blowers that are much smaller and operate much like jet engines. These are piston engines that operate like the compressor in your garage, on a much larger scale of course.
Whew it arrived just in time. I didn't think it was going to get here before the end of the year. I thought it would have been bigger. It is suppose to last the whole 365 days but this looks like it'll only last 52 weeks. But looking at the state this year is ending in there's not really much other option.
Now let's see. Instructions...instructions...where are the...oh here they are. "Clean your 2017 thoroughly so as no cross contamination". Well...bugger that. 2017 is so shite covered I'm just going to put down some newspaper and bin bags and we'll pave over it with the new year and pretend it didn't happen.
Next.
"Prepare the area with Hogmanay". Well that appears to be in full swing. The people on the telly are having some BBC sanctioned fun. They look like they're enjoying themselves but it doesn't seem to have reached their faces yet and the other channels are showing....oooh....American Werewolf in London...aww it's already started. Ah maybe next year,
Next year. That'll be in 23 minutes. Maybe less now. Yes, now it's 22 minutes. That was quick. A little too quick. Makes me wonder if the year really has been a standard however many minutes a year has. Is it 14? More? 14 and a half? Fine, we'll say everything ran as normal.
But I'm keeping my eye on you 2018

Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) is found in Peninsular Malaysia while Black Crown Pitta (Erythropitta ussheri) is found in Borneo.
Pittas are diurnal, requiring light to find their often cryptic prey. They are nevertheless often found in darker areas and are highly secretive, though they will respond to imitations of their calls.
All Rights Reserved ©
Diet: Earthworms, snails, insects and similar invertebrate prey, as well as small vertebrates.
Habits & migratory pattern: Pittas are monogamous and females lay up to six eggs in a large domed nest in a tree or shrub, or sometimes on the ground. Both parents care for the young.
The movements of pittas are poorly known and notoriously difficult to study. Four species of pittas are fully migratory, and several more are partially so, though their migrations are poorly understood. Fully migratory pitta are the Indian pitta, the African pitta, the fairy pitta and the blue-winged pitta.
It requires a reasonable effort to get up to the Bishop Hill ridge but, clearly, plenty of people have done that and it's easy to see why.
I love the CI from Groningen and the way the people, shops etc fill it with life.

This shot required a lot of patience because of the number of visitors - well, at least because of 2 of them. Some photographer set up against the lighthouse and shot his model who was posing on the picnic table. For about 45 minutes both his tripod and the model did not move. Ultimately this required 5 stacked exposures (one for FG DOF and 4 to "paint out" various people).

Day 341 of my 365 project for 2015.
Week 49 of my weekly project for 2015.
Spy on me - I don't know how the hours passed in the olive groves this morning. Chasing the Caucasian squirrel requires patience, They don't really go down to the ground unless they need to be fed. Even if I see them on the tree trunk, they disappear very quickly by jumping from tree to tree. They're incredibly quick and like flying acrobats. North Aegean region - Türkiye is full of olive groves and this opportunity also determines their living spaces. They are nesting in the trunks of centuries-old olive trees.
Here is this curious lovely male individual; It has made a home for itself in the hollow of a century-old olive tree with a diameter of 50 cm. The female was not in the nest during the period I watched for over 2 hours. My sudden encounter with a curious and young individual male Caucasian squirrel definitely made my day.
Today I tried to capture different close-up poses without using TC 1.4. It was indeed a different experience for me. The teleconverter sometimes causes loss of clarity and lack of light even though I use a monopod. I think even bokeh is affected.
I hope you'll enjoy the my Caucasian Squirrel series as much as I enjoyed taking them.
The Caucasian squirrel lives in the hollows of centuries-old olive trees. The number of Caucasian squirrels in the North Aegean region is decreasing every year, noticeably.
Like most red squirrels, spotting a Caucasian Squirrel is definitely becoming a rare sight. Climate change affects nature differently in every corner of the world.
The Caucasian squirrel - Sciurus anomalus ; The Caucasian squirrel or Persian squirrel, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus found in temperate broadleaf and mixed forests in south-western Asia.
The species is usually said to have first been described in 1778 by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in the 13th edition of Systema Naturae, and named Sciurus anomalus. However, some authors argue that this work was actually published in 1788, and that the true first description was made by Johann Anton Güldenstädt in 1785.
Description -
Caucasian squirrels are small tree squirrels, with a total length of 32 to 36 cm (13 to 14 in), including the 13 to 18 cm (5.1 to 7.1 in) tail, and weighing 250 to 410 g (8.8 to 14.5 oz). The color of the upper body fur ranges from greyish brown to pale grey, depending on the subspecies, while that of the underparts is rusty brown to yellowish, and that of the tail, yellow brown to deep red. The claws are relatively short, compared with those of other tree squirrels, and females have either eight or ten teats.
Samuel Griswold Goodrich described the Caucasian squirrel in 1885 as "Its color is grayish-brown above, and yellowish-brown below".
Physical Description -
Caucasian squirrels have a dental formula of incisors 1/1, canines 0/0, premolars 1/1, and molars 3/3, totaling 20. They have four fingered fore feet and five fingered hind feet. Sex differences in body length or mass are not evident.
Distribution and habitat -
Caucasian squirrels are native to south-western Asia, where they are found from Turkey, and the islands of Gökçeada and Lesbos in the west, Iran in the southeast, and as far as Israel and Jordan in the south. It is one of only two species of the genus Sciurus to be found on Mediterranean islands, and, although Eurasian red squirrels have been recently introduced to some areas, is the only species of Sciurus native to the wider region.
The species mainly lives in forested areas dominated by oak, pine, and pistachio, up to altitudes of 2,000 metres (6,600 ft).
Biology and behavior -
The squirrels are diurnal, and solitary, although temporary groups may forage where food is plentiful. Their diet includes nuts, seeds, tree shoots, and buds, with the seeds of oak and pine being particularly favored. Like many other squirrels, they cache their food within tree cavities or loose soil, with some larders containing up to 6 kg (13 lb) of seeds. They live in trees, where they make their dens, but frequently forage on the ground, and are considered less arboreal than Eurasian red squirrels. They commonly nest in tree hollows lined with moss and leaves, and located 5 to 14 m (16 to 46 ft) above the ground, but nests are also sometimes found under rocks or tree roots. Their alarm call is high-pitched, and said to resemble the call of the European green woodpecker, and they mark their territories with urine and dung.
Breeding occurs throughout the year, but is more common in spring or autumn. Litters range from two to seven, with three or four being typical, and the young are fully mature by five or six months of age.
Conservation -
A survey in 2008 found that the species remained abundant within Turkey, however declines are noted in population within the Levant region. The guides for a survey in 1993 in Israel stated that they considered the species to be nearly extinct within the area studied. Whilst the Caucasian squirrel is threatened by poaching and deforestation, the declines recorded are not sufficient to qualify them as anything other than "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.[1] Hunting of the species is banned by the Central Hunting Commission, and the Caucasian squirrel is protected by the Bern Convention and the EU Habitats Directive.

The gentle worker: Bumblebee - After a season of abundant North Aegean rains, the lavender flowers in our garden bloomed with exceptional beauty and attracted many bumblebees.
With my Nikon Z8 and 105mm macro lens, I spent a quiet moment observing one of these tiny visitors as it held onto the lavender flower and collected nectar. Capturing the details of its eyes, body, and delicate movements reminded me once again that nature’s greatest stories are often hidden in the smallest moments.
Shot in natural light during the late afternoon, this image is a celebration of patience, observation, and the wonderful connection between flowers and pollinators.
After an unusually generous season of rainfall in the North Aegean region of Türkiye, the lavender flowers in our garden bloomed with remarkable abundance. This year, I noticed a significant increase in bumblebee activity, with many visitors constantly moving among the flowers.

Every season writes its own story in nature. Weather patterns, flowering cycles, and local conditions can create remarkable differences from one year to another. This image is not only a close look at a bumblebee, but also a small record of the changing rhythms of our garden ecosystem.

We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.
― Henry David Thoreau
It is a commonplace of all religious thought, even the most primitive, that the man seeking visions and insight must go apart from his fellows and live for a time in the wilderness.
― Loren Eiseley

His book "The Star Thrower", a collection of his works, is remarkable in every way. A naturalist who thought well beyond his scientific training, he was referred to as "the heir apparent" to Henry David Thoreau for good reason.]
Haussmann was about 1870 responsible for the "boulevard architecture" of Paris. A style I really like. This picture is from the doorway of a house in the 11e arrondissement.
The following is from urbanplanet.info:
(...)
From the outset, Haussmann requires that the buildings obey some architectural rules about the height and the number of floors for buildings. He often specified the construction materials to use according to the prestige of the different areas of the town. An aesthetic gradation, parallel to the social gradation, however introduces some variety: From houses for workers and small manufacturers to rich houses of the boulevards. His goal of a harmonious cityscape led to the repetitive use of certain basic elements with finely varying details. Even though Haussmann himself never drafted a single building, through regulations he defined a style for the bourgeois apartment building of the end of the nineteenth century.
The so-called “Haussmann style” buildings usually have from five to seven floors, designed to accommodate several families of varying social classes under the same roof, mark the emergence of a new civil society. The new buildings along the wide boulevards, with facades built out of cut stones, possess a continuous balcony on the second and fifth floor and the mansard roofs are with roof hatches, which lighted the rooms of the service personnel.
A social diversity on different floors
The ground floor was usually designed with commerce in mind and the first floor to house the building’s shopkeepers. The second floor (French “étage noble”) was for the wealthier families. High enough from the road to avoid noise but not too many stairs to climb. Elevators were still new and very expensive and only installed in prestigious places like the Grands Hôtels.
The most generous apartments, with the highest ceilings and large balconies, were on this floor. The floor plans were derived from those of aristocratic apartments of the 18th century: salon, dining rooms and bedrooms lie behind the main facade, while the secondary rooms, such as the kitchen, orient themselves to the courtyard. The apartments were decorated conservatively and the ornaments concentrate on the balconies and cornice.
On the higher floors, the ceilings were built lower and the presence of balconies and other luxuries depended on the architect who designed the building. The top floor was reserved for servant staff and was a warren of small independent rooms (French “chambres des bonnes”) with shared bathroom facilities. Sometimes the staff often had their own stairwell on the yard side, which gave a direct access to the kitchen. For a long time those rooms, now outfitted with private baths, were typical student apartments or have been connected to larger apartments to give views over the zinc roofs of Paris.

Wickham Place is the London home of Lord and Lady Southgate, their children and staff. Located in fashionable Belgravia it is a fine Georgian terrace house.
Vera, the current Lady Southgate dislikes her mother-in-law because she has the annoying habit of not retiring to a quiet life in the Dower House on the Buckinghamshire estate, preferring instead to spend a great deal of time in London during the Season, using Wickham Place as her base. And why should the Dowager retreat when she was a famed as a beauty not so long ago, and still is very beautiful, intelligent and vibrant? Doors to salons and soirees open to her in preference to her ‘Dollar Princess’ daughter-in-law. The Dowager dislikes her daughter-in-law in equal measure as she is disliked by her. The Dowager despises her American vulgarity, lack of taste and tact and has never forgiven her for stealing away her eldest son, even though the Southgate estate required an eligible American heiress or else sell an old master or two, thanks to the late Lord Southgate’s gambling and poor head for investments and the Dowager’s frivolous spending.
The Dowager, through careful Machiavellian emotional manipulation of her eldest son, has ensured that even though she has been displaced by the ‘Dollar Princess’ as mistress of Wickham Place, she still has a splendid suite on the second floor, always at the ready for her arrival. Tonight, the Dowager is in residence and in her drawing room, where he awaits her son, who must pass her open salon door on his way to the library.
“Richard! Richard, is that you?” the Dowager calls sweetly as she senses someone in the hallway outside her door.
“Mother, you aren’t out this evening?” Richard replies, popping his head through the door, book in hand on his way to the library, just as the Dowager suspected.
“No Richard, not tonight. I couldn’t bear to go to Evelyn’s supper party, especially since I’ve been in London for nearly two weeks and barely seen you.”
“I’ve been here, Mother.”
“I know darling, but I’ve been so frightfully busy catching up with everyone. You know how much I like to be amid the pleasures of the season. You really should have come with me to the Royal Academy. There were some marvellous paintings this year!”
Eying his mother’s table set before the fire Richard remarks, “Backgammon, Mother?”
“Yes darling, I thought you might care to play a game with me since I’m home this evening. I know how much you love backgammon. Remember how we used to play backgammon together when you were young?”
“I seem to recall that you always won.”
“Well,” the Dowager’s eyes narrow. “I did win a few times, but I don’t think I always won, darling.”
“Well, I was just going to the library to return a book and then Vera and I…”
“Oh Vera!” the Dowager scoffs with a wave of her elegantly bejewelled hand. “You can see Vera any day of the week, whereas I am here now.”
“And I see that you’re prepared with a bottle from my cellar.”
“One of you father’s bottles: Romanée Saint Vivant 1885.”
“Well… maybe just one game, Mother.”
The Dowager’s eyes light up as she indicates to the empty Chippendale chair at the Queen Anne table.
“But only if I can smoke, Mother. This is my house now, and I can smoke wherever I like.”
“Of course Richard,” the Dowager smiles at her son’s petulant outburst. “Wickham Place is yours now, and you may do as you please. I’ll ring for Withers and have him bring an ashtray, and some chocolates. I always remember we’d eat chocolates whilst we play.”
With a silver ashtray and a glass bowl of chocolates provided by Withers the Butler, mother and son settle down to play a friendly game of backgammon.
“So,” Richard asks as he opens the bottle of burgundy and pours wine into the Dowager’s glass. “What is it you want, Mother? You may get the better of me more often than I’d care to admit to, but even I, with my dim wits, can see through this subterfuge.”
“Richard!” she gasps. “You wound me!”
“No-one wounds you, Mother, except maybe when they tighten your reticule.”
“How vulgar! I didn’t raise you to talk about money, Richard. I see that my daughter-in-law’s frank conversation skills are rubbing off on you.” Richard glares at her, and she stands rebuked, so with a more gentle voice the Dowager continues, “However, since you mention it, I would like to talk about my pitiful allowance. I can’t manage the Season on such a paltry amount.”
This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.
This week the theme, “games” was chosen by David, DaveSPN.
What better game to play than backgammon amid the elegance of the Dowager’s drawing room. However this upper-class domestic scene is different, for it is made up entirely of 1:12 size dollhouse miniatures, some of which come from my own childhood.
Fun things to look for in this tableaux include:
The backgammon set I made myself from a beautifully appointed kit. The buff coloured felt around the outside of the box is so soft.
The Queen Anne lamp table that the game is set on I was given on my seventh birthday, and it is one of my oldest miniatures in the collection.
The two Chippendale chairs are from a larger artisan carved dining room suite that I bought a few years ago from a miniature specialist in America who acquired it from a miniatures museum that was closing. Some of the chairs have stickers on the underside of their seat cushions indicating that they come from the ‘white room’.
The dice are actually a pair of wooden miniature Georgian gambling dice (inherited from my Grandmother, passed down through the generations).
The red and white marbled bowl containing miniature chocolates is actually a 1920s glass bugle bead.
The two glasses and the bottle of burgundy are 1:12 miniature artisan pieces which are made from real glass. The label is a genuine facsimile of its real size equivalent.
The ashtray is also an artisan piece, made of cut clear crystals set in a silver metal frame. The tray has black ash in it, and even came with its own 1:12 cigarette which rests on the lip, just where Richard put it before he started playing backgammon with his cunning Mother.
The book is also an artisan piece with printed words on each page and bound in buff coloured leather.

With the Birmingham loaned Tridents required back at their Home Depots, 8 additional BX02s joined the existing fleet of 6 at Walsall, in July 2020. A total of 25 ‘foreign’ Tridents were loaned to Walsall, all but 4568/9 (from Yardley Wood), being from Birmingham Central. It’s worth noting however that only a fraction of the total were present at any one time, with frequent swaps when buses required MOT etc.
Need a new perspective?Sometimes, seeing clearly requires looking at things with a fresh set of eyes. When you’re able to peer through the dust, that’s when you can reveal even more stars. ✨

Image of a portion of the Carina Nebula, vertically divided in half between Hubble's view on the left and Webb's view on the right. A "Hubble" label in small white text is to the right edge of the Hubble view, while a "Webb" label in the same font is to the right edge of the Webb view. Both the Hubble and Webb views feature a a blue “sky” dotted with stars and an orange-brown “mountain range” below it. Starting with the Hubble view, the blue portion is a more faded color and mixed with shades of green. Some pink points of starlight, each with 4 diffraction spikes, poke through the blue. The orange-brown portion is dusty, and the few stars that can be seen are only tiny dots of pinkish red. The mountainous area also features a prominent knob sticking out on the left side. In the Webb view, we see that Webb’s blue portion is much more rich, dark and vivid in color. Compared to Hubble, a multitude of stars in shades of light orange and blue are visible, including two giant six-pointed stars on the very right. The orange-brown portion is also dotted with stars galore, each with a set of 6 diffraction spikes. This is because Webb's infrared vision is able to cut through the curtain of dust, revealing many more stars in the landscape.
Found this moth sleeping under the car early this morning, so of course I thought it was an easy target for a photo or 2.
And yes, it was sleeping because I gave it a slight poke with my finger and it fluttered around a bit :P

Ravens are among the most intelligent birds - often exhibiting behaviors requiring more intelligence and problem solving than many mammals. One famous test that most ravens master on the very first try is the meat on a string on a stick test. A piece of meat is hung off a perch via a string, which is a situation never seen in the wild. Ravens pull up the string with their beaks and then hold the collected string with their feet, and repeat this process until the meat is within reach. This demonstrates a high level of cognition and problem solving. Ravens have been known to lead wolves to kills, so that they can break open the hide while feeding, thereby allowing the ravens access to the meat. Ravens in Yellowstone National Park re-established this behavior when wolves were re-introduced to the park, despite these ravens not having shared a habitat with wolves for many generations. They are also among the most playful of birds, and have been seen sliding down snowbanks, seemingly just for fun, and will break sticks off of trees to engage in social play with other ravens, thus making their own "toys". They have among the largest brains amonst birds.
