A shot from La Grange, Texas. So different from the hill country where I live. But, still pretty in its own way.
I signed up with Airbnb and I have my first people coming on Friday. However, I have discovered a down side to Airbnb. They report all your income to the IRS..;( I didn't see that coming. So, I'm still listing room mate wanted in the newspapers..:).
The weather reports for our area are finally predicting true winter weather this weekend. But... with the possibility of a snow/frozen rain mix which is rare for the deep south.
So with that in mind, I am posting this Gulf Fritillary and thinking warm, sunny, happy summer thoughts with the hopes the weather reports are wrong - at least for the snow/ice part.

We had reports of one Snow Bunting along the coast. I tried my luck and found this nice male early that morning. It was my first time seeing this beautiful species. Never thought I'd see one in my area. A nice lifer addition! Went to check a couple days later and he has migrated. Talk about luck!
Maybe wider by the minute . . . We knew when we rescued her that it was likely kittens were on the way. Holly is thriving and very happy to be safe here with us! We love her and can manage whatever comes! ❤️

I was searching for a rare bird reported at the San Gabriel River Coastal Spreading Grounds, but had to settle for this winter visitor.
Story of my life: Lots of appointments this AM so I grabbed the camera because that was the only way I'd get any images today. This is the lovely scene from my orthopedic surgeon's office. It's a very pretty snow--light, fluffy, and blowing off the trees creating slippery spots on the roads.
Here is the view I went to capture in Iceland. It is a truly beautiful spot, but it was ruined for me by photographers being I suppose people. I hiked out before dawn the weather report was for sun the weather report in Iceland was never right but then the weather seam so local changeable by that I mean local to around 100 meters or so! Anyways I hiked out to this amazing spot I’d read about seen so many pictures of, I was the first one there I set up started taking a few shots .Just as the light was about to get interesting from nowhere carloads of photographers ruck up at surround me hedged in far enough I’ve got my spot. It’s fair game anyone can come and do this no problem then some start setting up in front of me and probably all the other ones as well! Now call me old fashioned but that’s just rude! We are all there with the same cause. So here is the image with the rude people photoshopped out lol. And please forgive my giving off about photographers! It’s a bit like complaining about traffic we are traffic… One thing it forced me off road which was a good thing to start finding spots that people didn't go to and thats when I realy started to enjoy Iceland!
For the non-Australian's the Royal Commission investigating the Federal Robodebt Scheme handed down it's final, damning report. The report covers the politicians, public servants and architects of the automated debt collection scheme that was fundamentally illegal and mathematically flawed. It targeted approx 500,000 of the nations poorest people. Finally there is hope of justice with a sealed section being sent to the newly commissioned National Anti-Corruption Commission. As to truth in politics, I'm still being disappointed by much of the debates on a whole range of important topics.

You might remember this little hole in a fence post at St Cyrus. A few weeks ago, I'd noticed a couple of male leafcutter bees on these posts, so on another visit I looked for nest holes in the posts, and was thrilled to find one occupied hole, but was then surprised to see that it was occupied not by a bee, but by a digger wasp (`Flick' back about 10 images in my stream). Since then, when I've been at St Cyrus, I've keenly looked in on the digger wasp as I passed; it was there every day I checked. Yesterday, after a break of about 6 days, I think, I was back and checked the post to find not the digger wasp but a cute bee in the same hole! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera, so this is a quick snap on my phone.
I'm curious about what's gone on here; could they both be using the same hole?; did the wasp move out naturally, and then the bee moved in?; did the bee evict the wasp?; is one a parasite?; are they both nesting?; was one or both using it as shelter?
I'm also not sure what type of bee this is. The leafcutters I saw (a few photos in my recent uploads) have now been kindly IDd by the expert Steven Falk, as one of the rarer leafcutters, the black-headed leafcutter bee (Megachile circumcincta). This could be a female (according to his book, they usually nest in sandy ground, but have also been reported to nest in wood), but that's a wild guess.
So much to learn :D

Yesterday we were awakened at 5am with a very loud and bright lightning/rain storm. The storms rolled in and out all day, a welcome relief from the summer heat. : )

After reports claiming that Class 60 haulage could come to an end soon on services such as this, how pleasing was it to have this loco once again doing this service?
There were reports of a Great Gray Owl up north that I had to check out. Last year there was also one just a tad more North which was the first in over twenty years. To have two years in a row of Great Gray Owls in Northern California was just baffling news and a very rare!
I drove four hours North with a friend and we were very welcomed by a very kind and hospitable owner. She allowed a small group of us onto her property and we had the pleasure of photographing this majestic owl.
The first day the owl stayed fairly high and he sat stagnant at a few spots for long periods of time. He studied different holes on the ground and we all tried to guess where he might fly down to. I gambled and cheated left and knelt down based on what my intuition was resonating. I chose correctly as I was knelt down and tracked him on his way towards me. He was probably 10-15 feet away from me as he ripped his prey from the hole and carried it away into a Redwood tree where he took the time to eat it. This prey was large he couldn't just gulp it so he had to downsize it by picking it to pieces before he swallowed it.
We had a very action filled second day and came away with great memories and company.
We were the last group of people she allowed onto her property as she expressed to us that she didn't want to handle anymore large groups. We were grateful for her hospitality and the opportunity she allowed us to have.

The secret is out, and the Canadian internet groups imploded after the release of five SD70ACU's painted to honor the Canadian and United States Armed Forces. Thanks to the team at CP for making this possible, as well as putting on a great ceremony at the Calgary headquarters on Remembrance Day 2019. The 5 meter barrier around the units was a nice touch, as every fan managed to get lots of sunny shots without having to use a people filter.
It's going to be interesting to shoot these units on the road, with the variations in dark and light paint each one will present challenges to the photographer, but its bette rthen dirty red!
