A student is trying to replicate my Besta - 22 door.

For who don't know what the term "port replicator" means there is, as usual, a Wikipedia page.

I made this photo with her Nikon D40 (a toy camera, compared with the D300 she is using).

The photographer I chose to emulate was Nadar. Because I am a CS Major, I decided to write an openCV program to create a nadar-esque filter. Nadar has several iconic features in the majority of his images. Firstly, a dark vignette around the edges of the photo to frame the face and bring attention to its detail. This is often why hands or other small details are left out of his photographs, as well as why dull backgrounds are used. Nadar took his photographs in a studio with very flat, straight-on lighting, giving his photographs a more formal tone. This was done so that he could control the quality of the images to all be in a similar likeness. Finally, his images often have either a brown or greyish tint.

I was able to replicate many of these features using image processing functions such as vignette, brown coloring, and dirt filters. The image was also processed to focus on Nadar’s framing choices. Details of the face are emphasized using algorithms which smooth-out small details but sharpen contrasting lines. I also emulated his stylistic choices and studio-look by using a flat white background and a combination of ambient lighting and straight-on lighting. Additionally, I took care to maintain a serious look and pose which is often how the subjects of his photographs are portrayed.
