The remote for my camera and the tripod I ordered came today in the mail!
One would think that I'd have hopped right to and started experimenting. However, I was engrossed in a book and HAD to finish it. Then I went for a long run and upon my return, made dinner and drank an ample glass of wine. Put in a DVD, folded laundry, and stretched. I was shocked (uh, duh) when I finally looked at the clock to discover that only five minutes were left in the day and I hadn't taken Photo #175. So, here it is.
Not to worry, I've got plenty of schemes concocted up in my head that will make good use of the new accessories. But those big plans will have to wait for another day.

The famous (and vastly overrated, according to most locals) Little Mermaid statue was absent from her usual perch on the rock to the left during my visit. The statue was shipped to Shanghai to sit on display in the Danish pavilion at the 2010 World EXPO, and replaced by "Mermaid Exchange - Remote," a contemporary Chinese artwork by Ai Weiwei. The large LED screen placed at the Mermaid's usual home was meant to broadcast a direct transmission of the statue from the pavilion in Shanghai, non-stop and in real time, for the duration of the EXPO.
They seemed to have some technical difficulties with that whole non-stop feed thing, but eventually it came back up...

In addition to its trip to China, the statue has had an interesting history. Vandals have painted the stature, sawed off the mermaid's head twice, removed an arm, and even been blasted it from its perch with dynamite.

Part of getting my KAP gear ready for Nikumaroro is getting this R/C unit working again. I'm planning to take it apart and repackage it to sit on my belt. The controls will be manipulated from a small circuit board I'm going to build and mount on the eyepiece.
Other mods I need to make: fix the antenna, replace the NiCd batteries with NiMH AA's, add a 3.3V regulator and disable the auto-on feature when the trainer cable is inserted.

Crisp Point Light sits on a remote portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the Lake Superior shore. The lighthouse sits west of Paradise and north of Newburry and was completed by 1904. It is quite an adventure to get there, but it is a beautiful site. Were there no black biting flies, it would have been a perfect day. I will write about this later. Still, I was able to get around while being eaten alive by the worst bugs on the planet.

Hold off thinking about a "return path" and imagine if the BBC had invested in a standard for remotes like it has with the Freeview... instead of the "red button" as an awkward funnel into a case load of different actions for different contexts you'd have a series of simple buttons. "Like", "Dislike" would be good, a BARB panel consisting of every single viewer.
