My Dad is on the second camel from the right. I remeber seeing this picture when I was a little kid and being amazed that my Dad had actually seen the Pyramids. He was serving in Egypt as part of Patton's Army. Not long after this picture was taken he caught trench mouth and had all of his teeth pulled by an Army dentist in a lean-to tent. The temperature was 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
As a parade approaches, my Dad stands with others to catch sight of the stars and stripes in the distance. Every time our flag passes is an opportunity to remember those who have given so much in the name of country.

Young people stand near the spot where, on May 4, 1970, Kent State student William Shroeder was shot dead when Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War on the Kent campus
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.
Reminder: Flags should be flown at half-staff on May 15th
This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

Yesterday was the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Cable street, where Jewish Londoners, supported by Irish dock workers and others, fought off the fascist demonstrators who had come to intimidate them (Oswald Moseley's Blackshirts), as well as mounted police who tried, unsuccessfully, to break their barricades.
Excellent speeches from community representatives (including the inspirational Rabbi Herschel Gluck) about the importance of sticking up for one another. Britain could have become another fascist state in the 1930s, and the threat never fully goes away.

when i was little
my brother taught me
how to spell
orange.
"first," he said. "you draw an orange."

"then after you eat an orange, you feel like running,
so you write,"
ran
"then you write the first two letters of
your name, because you, genny, love oranges."
ge
we can't choose the things that people will give us
but we can choose what we will keep.
i will keep

Kudos to students at Milton High School who commemorate 9/11 by placing one flag for every individual who lost their life in the quad in front of the school. Though most of the students have only a vague recollection of the events that transpired on this day and forever changed our world, their efforts are very much appreciated by the community - especially by those whose lives were directly impacted on this tragic day.
Shortly before taking this pic, while I chatted with a photog friend, an SUV pulled up. My friend recognized the woman waving from the front seat of the vehicle and the two were soon sharing a friendly hug, while several children spilled out of the doors and gathered round and the woman's husband slowly walked over. Somewhere in the midst of this joy was also a deep sorrow, and the reason for the visit was soon shared: the husband had lost his sister, the woman her sister-in-law on 9/11. They'd heard about the flags at Milton, but this was the first time they'd seen them in person. It was obvious the pain is still very real in their hearts. In memory of the loss, they named their beautiful and youngest daughter, Margaret, after the sister.
Despite the fact that the events of 9/11/2001 took place nine years ago, it's hard not to remember and now to have met a man who lost his sister - in her 30's - serves as another reminder of the very real impact so many experienced on this day.
Blessings to Peter and Sherry Walier and their family on this day.

As the towers fell 13 years ago, New York City transit mobilized for the evacuation of lower Manhattan, the painstaking search for victims, and the removal of hundreds of tons of broken cement and i-beams. But in the history of those days, transit workers were overlooked to a great extent. We supplied all of the heavy equipment on site for the first three days, until outside contractors were brought in. Three thousand transit workers assisted, many staying for weeks. Today, many suffer health effects from their service on the pile. TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen was one of those there on a daily basis serving alongside every title. These photos document some of the work of transit workers at Ground Zero as we remember this tragedy 13 years later.

This is an experiment using texture for a painterly effect. I kind of like the way it came out, but am uncertain about the legitimacy of the technique. Maybe a photograph should look like a photograph, after all, and a painting like a painting. Judged as a painting, this image wouldn't amount to much, I'm sure. Oh, well. It was fun to make.
The Indian Head test card was a black and white television test pattern that was introduced in 1939 by RCA of Harrison, New Jersey as a part of the RCA TK-1 Monoscope. Twentieth century television became so important socially that this mere technical image, covertly identified as a branded industrial product, has become a historic cultural icon. Its name comes from the art of an American Indian featured on the card.
The Indian Head test pattern became familiar to large TV audiences that had bought television sets from 1947 on. The Indian Head would often follow the formal television station sign-off after the United States national anthem. This Indian Head pattern was also used in Canada

I remember these candies well when I was little. One of the many things I used to buy at the penny candy store across the street from my house, really it was diagonally , but I could walk there in 20 seconds or less. I remember the sweetness when you bit in, and then the sourness after you chewed on them a bit more. Not one of my favorite candies but a memorable one at that.
A slow day for photos, but I walk by this machine all the time when I'm leaving the Emerald Square mall so I thought I'd snap a photo since I was looking for something colorful, this filled the shot. A closeup of the machine, and a strange reflection in the glass , not much else going on here..
...But I like candy when it's wrapped in a sweater...
