Remember always these men who gave their lives for us in the great war 1914 - 1919

It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known." Carl Sagan, 1994
Thurso East Castle, Scotland. This was late 2001 or early 2002. My Nikon F801 (8008) film camera. Can't remember much technically about this shot. LIkely Kodak 100 or similar film, tripod mounted. A wonderful winter spent there that year. with my family. I scanned the photo from my photo album, not bad for a cheap scanner.

Today I am writing to Dr Sheila who, recently, sent me a long hand-written card when she learned of Rusty's death (May 14th). Dr Sheila met Rusty for just 6 days during Rusty's treatment for hypothyroidism two years ago.
At the time, Dr Sheila thought Rusty was "special" and she subsequently followed her on flickr. Dr Sheila chose to send me "a happy card instead of a sympathy card because we also saw the arrival of Tessa Soft Tummy on flickr".
In the above photo Rusty is hanging out with some of her mousies .... following blood work.

A 250-mile running challenge ‘Run to Remember’ ended on at Manchester’s Sportcity on Friday 4th of April.
Police officers and staff from across the country raised an estimated £100,000 for charity running in the memory of Greater Manchester Police officer Nicola Hughes.
The challenge saw 1,800 officers from run two miles-a-day for 125 days.
Nicola and her colleague PC Fiona Bone were killed while investigating a suspected burglary in Hattersley, Tameside in 2012.
Friday saw hundreds of officers and staff running the final two-mile leg around the Manchester Regional Arena.
Nicola's father Bryn, who organized the challenge said: “It has been fantastic, the turnout and determination has been amazing.
“It has been so overwhelming – at times you cannot describe it. The amount of support we have had has just been overwhelming,
"I wanted to do something positive to remember Nicola by. The biggest motivation is making sure people remember Nicola and remember what sort of person she was."
The money raised will go to the charities Care of Police Survivors, the North West Police Benevolent Fund and Victim Support.
Bryn added: “I want to do something that Nicola would have been proud of me for and I also want to raise money for the three charities that have helped us so much during this time and will probably continue to help us for a great deal longer,"
Bryn’s next challenge is to run a marathon at the North Pole.

This location opened in the late 2000s and relocated here in 2016; it was previously a Levin's of Virginia/Levin's Brass Beds. It became part of Kids Foot Locker in 2016.
Fruit cake with cheese and a glass of port ('port wine') at Christmastide is an old tradition in my family. The glass is one of a set that my grandparents used annually for this purpose in the first half of the 20th century. The cake in this picture is not christmas cake as such, it is an Irish tea bread made by me to Delia Smith's recipe.

I believe it was back in the 70's or 80 i last experienced freedom. and when MY children were small.. .. we felt free sometimes... it's almost better not to have tasted it when i think of the times presently :/ and so hard to describe to younger people at times :/.. anyone else ?

We arrived at the Armenian cathedral in the middle of an event commemorating and affirming the Armenian genocide of 1915. I assume the flags represent the countries that have acknowledged the genocide.
A fairly large crowd had gathered to hear the speeches and support the protest against genocide deniers.

On January 27, 1967, Apollo 1's crew--Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee--was killed when a fire erupted in their capsule during testing. Apollo 1 was originally designated AS-204 but following the fire, the astronauts' widows requested that the mission be remembered as Apollo 1 and following missions would be numbered subsequent to the flight that never made it into space.
