In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.
Reminder: Flags should be flown at half-staff on May 15th
This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

S&H Green Stamps (also called Green Shield Stamps) were trading stamps popular in the United States from the 1930s until the late 1980s.
I intended to go a little retro but, alas, the Nokia 3310 I ordered over the Internet werkt niet. Sent it back but it would have been nice... until I needed a music player, camera and dictaphone. I miss my HTC.

By 1939 plans to abandon Birmingham's trams (in the name of 'progress') were well on the way. With the expansion of bus routes it became clear garage accommodation was inadequate. That year over 50 buses were parked out on streets. The Corporation secured loans to build a new garage on the junction of Ridgeacre Road/Lane, Quinton, the final cost exceeding £120,000 (2 and half million in today's prices); including plant and machinery.
In Oct 1949 Quinton bus garage opened with a Daimler fleet of 72 required for services 3A, 9,10 and 34 (in later years duties on the 7, 11 and 82 were added). A feature of the garage was the sunken workshop with tunnels to enable engineers access to the pits without returning to floor level. Seen inside the garage just after opening is fleet 1576 amongst other Daimlers of its class. Whilst Quinton relieved pressure on Harborne garage both were subsequently closed as the drop in bus usage during the 80's and 90's brought on a policy of centralisation, the building now demolished and site occupied by a supermarket.

I learned that my friend Libi had passed away yesterday and her passing sent me rummaging through my archives for images I had of her. My friend, and Libi's son, Matt had his 50th birthday party a few years back and asked if I would take some photos to remember the occasion. This is still one of my favs from the night with mother and son dancing and serenading each other as the mariachis played on. RIP Libi. The world is a little emptier today without you here. Washington DC - More than 660,000 white flags have been displayed in a solemn tribute across a vast expanse on the National Mall in Washington, DC — each representing a life lost to the coronavirus pandemic in a heart-rending exhibit called “In America: Remember.”
Mr. Clark is a facinating man. In his lifetime, he experienced first hand racial injustice in his own country. Despite the difficulties he faced, he perservered and today is a man highly respected in his community. I've had the honor to work with him in a small group that discussed race and racism in our community. We learned a lot from one another. And what I like best about Mr. Clark is that he is willing to share his past experiences, not to open old wounds, but rather to inform so that history doesn't repeat itself.
"Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!" --Martin Luther King, Jr.

“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. i'll always be with you.Christopher Robin to Pooh”
Through most of the 1980s, in addition to a 55mph National speed limit, we had a restriction on speedometers to not display speeds above 85. The one shown is from a Mercedes 560SL from the mid 80s. The one in my 1974 450SL reads to 160.
