Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Today made me a bit nostalgic and I revisited photos I took during our trip to Ireland in May of 2012. I selected this series of photos that I believe I hadn't previously posted so that I could share some of the scenes with you. While there are many places in the world that I haven't visited yet, the home of my ancestors keeps calling me to return. It's a call I'd like to answer in the not too distant future.

Seven years have passed today. Photo of a cemetery on a hill (I think) was taken from a fast moving JR bullet train last year.

The Great East Japan Earthquake of magnitude 9.0 at 2.46 pm on Friday 11 March 2011 did considerable damage in the region, and the large tsunami it created caused very much more. The earthquake was centred 130 km offshore the city of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture on the eastern cost of Honshu Island (the main part of Japan), and was a rare and complex double quake giving a severe duration of about 3 minutes. An area of the seafloor extending 650 km north-south moved typically 10-20 metres horizontally. Japan moved a few metres east and the local coastline subsided half a metre. The tsunami inundated about 560 sq km and resulted in a human death toll of about 19,000 and much damage to coastal ports and towns, with over a million buildings destroyed or partly collapsed. My brother died in 2021 while painting the trim on our house in Maine. Today, I found this paintbrush on a rock near our house, and was reminded of him. He would not have been impressed to see an uncleaned brush left behind at the end of a job....

On a sunny afternoon I stand before the Hiroshima Genbaku (A-bomb) Dome, 150m from ground zero for the USA attack on August 6 1945. It was 237 days before I was born, and perhaps one of the reasons I was born at all when peace finally came. The building, reinforced as protection against earthquakes and known then as the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, was one of the few buildings to survive the attack. An estimated 60 to 140 thousand people were killed by the immediate explosion.

On a biographical note, I saw the aircraft that dropped the 'Little Boy' bomb, 'Enola Gay' a Boeing B29 Superfortress, several times when I studied at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the 1980s. The plane was parked for years at the edge of the nearby Chanute Air Force Base on the I-57 highway to Chicago. I was told at the time that there was controversy about what to do with it. Was it an important historical object or an icon of shame?

Express Motors Volvo B10M / Alexander PS R901 XVM is pictured in Penygroes depot prior to operating Bws Coleg 464. Before coming to North Wales the bus was operated by Stagecoach in Merseyside where it was numbered 20901, although new originally to Stagecoach Manchester as 901, one of a large batch of similar vehicles acquired to replace elderly double deckers.

Not my favourite buses, the Arriva Yorkshire Volvo B9TL/Darwen Olympus vehicles seem well liked at Selby. Here 1808 displays its Royal British Legion & Poppy branding on the 403 to Leeds.
