I would imagine (and hope) that many, many people will be stopping today to remember the horrific events of 11th September 2001. So many mental images that will never, ever leave our minds and hearts. People from so many different countries, not just the US. So many stories of loss and heartbreak - and so many stories of bravery and heroic actions. Remembering .... all those who lost their lives on that fateful day: all those who lost loved ones and close friends or fellow workers; all those who rushed in to "do their job" or "to help others" in any way they could. Remembering .... all those who were severely injured on that fateful day and who have bravely suffered every day since then; all those Firemen, Emergency Medical people, Police - men and women, who have suffered and continue to suffer emotionally and physically, including illnesses caused by being exposed to harmful chemicals. The list goes on and on. Remembering ... and praying that we never see another day like September 11th, 2001.

Zooming in almost fully (Focal Length, [35mm format] - 1080 mm) on an owl that has just dived into a tangle of tall grasses and dried plant stems gives a photographer quite the challenge. Most of the few shots I had time to take didn't work, so this is probably the only shot worth keeping. Can't remember if the owl was successful in catching a Meadow Vole in this particular attempt. So many little Voles give up their lives to feeding animals higher up on the food chain.
My alarm clocks were set for 5:30 am on 28 February 2016, and I was full of hope that for once, I would actually get out of the house good and early. I have such a problem getting myself out very early when I go off for a drive by myself. I think it was something like 8:30 am by the time I dragged myself off the computer and out the front door. To my horror, I discovered that my car door locks had frozen shut and my car was totally covered in a thick layer of extremely stubborn ice, that took me a long time to remove. Half an hour or so later, I was finally ready to start on my trip NW of the city.
It had been quite a long time since I saw my last Great Gray Owl. Some of my most recent sightings had been one that was in Fish Creek Park in Calgary for a while and my last photos of it were taken on 18 February 2014. There was also a Great Gray at Griffith Woods, Calgary, and some of my photos were taken on 10 February 2014. Saw another owl on our May Species Count out of the city on 25 May 2014. Many of my 'best' sightings and photos of Great Grays were taken NW of Calgary, the last dates being 28 March 2013 and 5 May 2013. So, after 25 May 2014 .... nothing! Seeing one on 28 February was such a thrill. No matter how many times I see one of these owls and no matter how many hundreds/thousands of photos I've taken, each owl is as exciting as the very first.
"Although the Great Gray Owl is the tallest American owl with the largest wingspan, it is just a ball of feathers. It preys on small mammals and has relatively small feet. Both the Great Horned and Snowy owls weigh half again as much, and have larger feet and talons. The oldest recorded Great Gray Owl was at least 18 years, 9 months old and lived in Alberta." When I first reached my approximate destination, I could see two or three cars way down the road, pulled over at the edge of the road. Often a good sign : ) Sure enough, friends had found an owl, It was on a distant barbed-wire fence post at first, then dove into the snow to try and catch a Meadow Vole. It then flew off into the trees with it and didn't return.
After a while, I drove some of the other roads in the area and later drove back to where the owl had been seen. Amazingly, assuming it was the same individual, it was in a distant tree, from where it hunted, moving to a different tree each time it made an unsuccesful dive. Eventually, it did catch a Vole. I left after a while, feeling that it was time to leave the owl 'in peace', and also knowing it was time for me to make the long drive home - approximately 246 km round trip.
A good thing I went when I did, as we had fog, a bit of snow, hoarfrost and very slick roads overnight till the following afternoon. There were 234 reported accidents in the city during those hours, none with life-threatening injuries, thankfully.

It's bonfire night here in the UK... which is an annual celbration known as
Guy Fawkes . I'm not able to get any shots tonight, but still wanted to enter into the spirit... so this is my effort. From the Disney fireworks display in the summer.

A poppy for remembrance on this Memorial Day weekend. I hope each of you are enjoying the time with family and friends as we remember.
Best large ... of course ... aren't all shots!
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was randomly woken up and having tea, suddenly saw the mug, it was a gift from my friend and brother shuvro, he's a major now a days, working in SSF - PM body guard, and now in a mission, captured the moment as it will give a thought about him every time I saw it.. mind game- gifted me tactically, so that I can remember him every time when I saw it..
Remember when it was warm...? In fact, it was HOT and I used to drag a chair down to the river and sit in the middle of it and read a book? That's all....just saying. I want it back. I am tired of being COLD...cold outside, cold inside, cold at work.... it is seriously time for this season of extreme global warming to come to an end. Enough said.
Like the night embrace the strange and lonely
Bring me shelter in the dark
It don't matter if the sun stops shining
It might save me from what's real
Save me from what's real

My good friend Bill from college gave me this plant as a host gift when he came back to visit. Sadly, Bill died of ALS many years ago but I still have this plant. It's leaves may get brown and spotted but I think of him whenever I water and care for it.
Had to do quite a bit of salvage work on this as the entire foreground was taken up by a lovely blue streak as a cast member strolled by with his blue flash light waving just as I was going for the shot. This shot was taken right at the begining of the Star Tours section, right after the loading sequence sound track as the first strains of the Star Wars theme are heard.
It's interesting to note that it wasn't just the cast member in the shot. The entire foreground was flooded with people coming and going as Disney opens up the front of the viewing area as a walkway on crowded nights DURING the fireworks. Kind of bummer, but necessary as 50,000 some odd people try to navigate their way from Tomorrowland over to Frontierland. Usually, all of the people disappear with the long shutter speeds, but those darn flash lights are there for eternity. Or until photoshopped out. Shot with the Sigma 10-20
To all those poor souls from every nation who suffered and died in the trenches of the first world war. So that we shall always remember.
From November 11 (UK rememberance day, Armistice de la Première Guerre mondiale in France) to November 19 (German Volkstrauertag), this week is dedicated to remembering the dead of the First World War. I’ll try doing a photographic equivalent showing places of commemoration to the dead of the great war from 1914 to 1918 from the Württemberg region I live. Though monuments here are naturally dedicated to German soldiers, we should commemorate the dead of every nation that fought the great war.
With Spring in full swing and Summer approaching, I wanted to remember that every season has beauty.
when I am gone.
I can't believe you want me there. It is so different, but I think I like it. I think I crave it.
