During the process of conducting my Isolation project, I realized that I have always been interested in defining relationships. Whether it is between two objects or between an object and its surrounding, I like to observe the connection and interaction between them. Moving from the stationary objects to my inner feelings, I started to focus on the relationship I have with another person.
People have always sought literature as a source for them to reflect on their own experience, especially when there is a lot of room for imagination. However with photographs, people are limited to the pictorial elements and figures they are given. Therefore I think that it is even harder for people to resonant with photographs themed in a personal relationship. Nevertheless, in my pursuit of exploring the universality of human relationships, I attempt to document bittersweet bonding between two individuals, and at the same time capture pictures that are culturally and emotionally charged.
There is an old saying in Chinese that people use to describe relationship: “The spectators see the chess game better than the players.” However, as a photographer, I am able to be the chess game player and the spectator at the same time. I might be blind and indulgent when I am in the game, while when I take and view the photographs of the game, I get to see clearly how the game went, and how I truly feel about my opponent. By doing this project, I get to know myself and my relationship better. Photography is like a pair of glasses for me to see every little nuance clearer.
