Once we were inside the palace, the crowd was regulated by security people at every door. The crowds in each room were still dense and security hurried us along, but there were photo opportunities as the rooms cleared. Between each room we were corralled in corridors were we shuffled towards the next room. People at our backs were continually pushing us forward, even when we were at a standstill.

An extract from this day's Journal:-

We shuffled from room to room while Katrina tried to tell us about everything in each room we entered. As it happened, at least half a dozen other guides were trying to do the same thing in a multiplicity of languages. The crowds were dense, the noise dreadful, and the place was stiflingly hot.

We shuffled along in a tide of humanity that just went on and on. Then a woman ahead if me slipped and fell, she went down face first and was bleeding from around her nose and eyes. People helped her up and the security people, who were everywhere, went to her aid. How they were ever going to get help to her, or carry her out, seemed an impossibility.

Phoenix Lock, is situated at the Western end of the main stretch of the Derby Canal from Sandiacre to Derby, just before it entered into the River Derwent by St Mary's Bridge. The lock's purpose was to regulate the flow of water into the canal from the Derwent, and also permit vessels to negotiate any varience in water levels, if any.

Alongside (R/H side) is the beginning of Nottingham Road, with it's adjacent terrace of shops and houses (featured in my 'Bridge Inn' painting) in the distance is St Mary's Bridge, with it's balustrades and alcoves, it formed the only route across the River Derwent into Derby from the North and East, until recent times, replacing earlier structures and originally a ford. Just beyond is the Duke Street Foundries, including the renown Andrew Handyside works. To the left, is part of a mill complex, situated on a tract of land that was known as Canary Island, being formed by the completion of the canal's dual outlets onto the River Derwent.

This drawing captures a Trent Barge negotiating the lock, having just passed the Phoenix Street bridge. The canal was built to accommodate these wide beam craft, which advantaged its commercial viability. This river connection also permitted navigation to the upper reaches of the Derwent in the Derby area.

The Galapagos marine iguana is an ugly reptile with amazing abilities. Charles Darwin on visiting the islands classified the animals as revolting. I found them to be very fascinating.

The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands that has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to forage in the sea, making it a marine reptile. They can dive down up to 30 feet into the water to find food. They have a natural ability to swim and to move around with speed.

Since much of the Galapagos Marine Iguana’s time is spent in the water there is still a great deal that we don’t know about them. It is known that they must come to land to help with regulating their temperature. The water is too cold for them to remain in it all the time.

When the body temperature drops too much, they have a hard time moving and that makes them vulnerable to predators such as frigate birds and the Galapagos hawk. They will become more aggressive too when they are cooler. They tend to spend time on rocks by the water with their head upwards to soak up as much sunlight as they can at once. - Wikipedia

We traveled between islands in the Galapagos on a private yacht called Queen of the Galapagos pictured here. Traveling would be done while we slept at night so when we woke up we were at our next destination. Sometimes the engines would be quite loud and the ship would pitch to one side or the other. This could be annoying, but still very worthwhile when you woke and realized you were actually traveling in the Galapagos. The islands are regulated to keep too many people from coming to each island and destroying the environment. So when someone books a trip there, you may be seeing different islands than expected because of the regulations. They vary each time you go. To be sure the wildlife on the islands is not disturbed, a government guide must travel the islands with you to let you know what can and cannot be done, and to make sure nothing happens to you while visiting. .

Large group of elephants having an absolute BLAST in a local mud hole. It was pretty dry at Hluhluwe- Lmfolozi safari park. It badly needed much more rain, but these beautiful creatures were living in the moment and it was wonderful to see.

It was supremely hot! Elephants bathe in mud to cool down their bodies due to very few sweat glands. They struggle to regulate their temperature so the mud acts as a natural sunscreen, protecting their skin from the harsh sunlight while also providing a barrier against insects and parasites.

The Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco), also known as the Common Toucan (or just Toucan), is the largest and probably best-known species in the toucan family. It is the largest representative of the order Piciformes. The total length of the species is 55–65 centimeters (22–26 inches). Relative to the body sizes of all birds, its bill is the largest, providing 30–50% of its body surface area. One function of its bill is as a surface area for heat exchange. The bill has the ability to modify blood flow, and thus, to regulate heat distribution, allowing it to use its bill as a thermal radiator. In its capacity to remove body heat, the bill is comparable to that of elephant ears (Tattersall, 2009). This toucan has a particular taste for Hyacinth Macaw eggs, accounting for more than half of the latter’s losses. Yet Toco Toucans are also fond of the fruits of the mandwi tree (Sterculia apetala) and are responsible for more than four-fifths of this tree’s seed dispersal. More than 90% of Hyacinth Macaw pairs nest in mandwi.

Also called "sunbathing" or "wing-drying", Anhingas (Anhinga anhinga) regulate their body temperature in the posture seen here on a sunny, but cool, day at Brazos Bend State Park, Needville, Texas.
