Some days you get lucky some days not so much despite all the careful planning luck/fate is that ethereal ingredient to great captures that cannot be regulated only hoped for but luck is in my opinion also what you make of it.

This scene captures fall in Kinderdijk quite nicely with nature helping a fellow out with some autumn colored fauna and lighting it all with a golden hue capturing the mills as I would imagine they looked when first constructed.

The premise of the mill for land reclamation was that the sails revolve in the wind turning a great screw drive that lifts the low lying water to a higher level then from that level the water is usually spread out through irrigation channels eventually ending up in a river then finally the ocean.

Today Kinderdijk is still pumped out continuously just now with diesel driven screws that you can observe at the pump building near the entrance of the site in the car park area, they keep the windmills as a back up in case of a major long-term power disruption and as a display of Dutch ingenuity.

Originally referred to as Grand Canyon, Fredrick Schwatka renamed it in July of 1883 Miles Canyon after General Nelson Miles. Schwatka wrote, “Through this narrow chute of corrugated rock the wild waters of the great river rush in a perfect mass of milk-like foam, with a reverberation that is audible for a considerable distance.” Although accounts differ as to the ferocity of the rapids, there is no question that they were very dangerous. As tourism increases and population centers encroach, these beautiful geologic formations are slowly being degraded by some peoples' willingness to disregard the signage that explicitly states not to climb on the formations. There have been indications that tourism to this park may soon be regulated, because of the few people that can't temper the compulsion to climb upon and take pictures on the formations.

The National Park also has an important recreational function. Certain creeks will stay navigable and recreational facilities have been created. Quiet forms of recreation that are nature-oriented will be

favored above others types of recreation.

Because the recreation had to make way for the development of nature zones, not open to the public, in the Biesbosch National Park, the Aakvlaai area was rearranged as compensation. It is a kind of Biesbosch on

a small scale. An active promotion of the Biesbosch as a recreation area is avoided to prevent a further increase of visitors to the Biesbosch.

The number of sightseeing boats is regulated by permits. Some of the shipping compagnies use environmentally friendly electric ‘whisper boats’ for their trips.

The dam of the Möhnesee in early November.

We used All Saints Day for a trip to the Möhnesee, a reservoir built in the early days of the 20th century to assure water supply of the Ruhr Area, to regulate rivers and canals and to protect the area against flooding. In the night of May 16th to 17th 1943 the dam was subject of an attack by modified Lancaster bombers using special rotation bombs. In military history the event is known as „Operation Chastise“. We took the time to enjoy the lake and to learn a lot about history. Möhnesee, NRW, Germany

Lake Meligkou or Moustou, Kynouria, Astros, Arcadia, eastern Peloponnese, Greece.

The Lake Meligkou, better known as Lake Moustou, is a wetland system consisting of two lakes, Lake Moustos and a smaller, Lake Cherronissos. It is located in the center of the bay of Astros, behind a sandy beach.

The Lake is formed by the waters of a spring that flows from the edge of the hill to the east and goes directly into the sea. The lake has many spas and many visitors swim close to the source.

The Lake Moustos is one of the most important wetlands in the geographic region of Peloponnese, Greece, with priceless value for the ecological balance. As a wetland, this ecosystem enriches the underground water reserves, filters the stuffed water that they receive, binds carbon dioxide, regulates the local climate by storing or releasing heat, supports the food chains and provides shelter to many plant and animal species. It is the only place in the area that presents a gateway for the migratory birds. For this reason the area is protected and it belongs to the network of Natura 2000. The predominant vegetation consists of dunes, salt marshes and reed beds, while the interesting wildlife of the lake includes fish, reptiles, amphibians and a wide variety of birds. Moorhens, mallards, herons, swan and coots spend winter at this area while the coastline is inhabited by Caretta Caretta turtles.

The urban development of the banks of the Tagus River was subject to intensive development at the beginning of the 16th century, when King Manuel I built a new royal residence (the Ribeira Palace) on the river bank. The area was developed thanks to the construction of the port, shipbuilding facilities and other administrative buildings regulating trade between Portugal and other parts of the world at that time. During the reign of the King Dom Jose I, the great earthquake of 1755, followed by the tsunami and fire, destroyed most of Lisbon, including the Ribeira Palace and other buildings on the river. After the earthquake, the square was completely rebuilt. A large rectangular square in the shape of the letter "U" was designed, open towards the Tagus.

The square was called "Praça do Comércio" (Trade Square) to indicate its new function in the Lisbon economy. The central point of the square is the equestrian statue of King José I. In the direction of Augusta street, which connects the square with another traditional Lisbon Rossio square, a triumphal arch was built in 1875, called Arco da Rua Augusta.

The "Praça do Comércio" square has been recognized as a national monument of Portugal since 1910.

Obszar ten rozwijał dzięki budowie portu, obiektów stoczniowych i innych budynków administracyjnych regulujących handel pomiędzy Portugalią i innymi częściami ówczesnego świata. Za panowania króla Dom José I, wielkie trzęsienie ziemi w 1755, po którym nastąpiło tsunami i pożar, zniszczyło większość Lizbony, w tym Pałac Ribeira i inne budynki nad rzeką. Po trzęsieniu ziemi plac został całkowicie przebudowany. Zaprojektowano duży, prostokątny plac w kształcie litery "U", otwarty w kierunku Tagu.

Plac nazwano "Praça do Comércio" (Placem Handlu), aby wskazać na jego nową funkcję w gospodarce Lizbony. Centralnym punktem placu jest konny posąg króla José I. W kierunku ulicy Augusta, która łączy plac z innym tradycyjnym lizbońskim placem Rossio, zbudowano w 1875 roku łuk triumfalny, nazywany Arco da Rua Augusta.

Flatiron Building (or once called the Fuller Building after a major construction contractor that had their offices there) at 23rd St and Fifth Avenue.I had taken shots of buildings in the area that you've seen already like the old Western Union building,the old retail stores on Ladies Mile,and the Sohmer Piano Building (off to the right with the cupola).I saw the Flatiron building again the same day as those and I said "Why not".I took the shot sitting down this time to get the entire building.There was more light on it this time showing detail,the last shot I took showed a lot of shadow.I've never been inside the building but I read that it has 22 floors.Strangely though,there's an elevator that goes from the 20th to the 22nd floor.The 21st floor originally was an attic,above it another story and a cornice were added in 1915 to give the building additional height due to complaints of high winds (see YouTube video below) coming off the top of the structure.A "draughting room" with skylights was put on the 22nd floor to regulate the air flow of the building.Hope you like.Happy Weekend. youtu.be/7DhLmhs0UI4 daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2011/06/1902-flatiron-buil...

Sunrise near the Boezemmolen nr. 6, in Haastrecht. Some cows were approaching me to start their breakfast in some meadows of the Hooge Boezem. The Hooge Boezem is one of the bosoms of the polder, and the mill is regulating the waterlevel of this bosom. Well, it used to regulate it and in the the future it will do it again, but for now it is not able to grind. It is restored so that it can perform this function in the future.

A bosom is a land part that has a fluctuating (ground)water level. From the lowest part of the polder, water is transported upwards to a bosom with help of a windmill. The bosom is always the last stage water is before transported to the main river of the polder (in this case the river on the photo, the Vlist). Sometimes, when the lowest part of the polder is really deep, it needs several bosoms to overwin the height difference. Alongside the Vlist there used to be 7 mills, with 6 bosoms, but all but one are demolished because steam pumping station "S.I. van Nooten" took over this job. That's why this piece of land behind the mill is called Hooge Boezem (High Bosom), it was the last, and thus highest, bosom before the water was transported to the Vlist. This windmill transported the water from the second-last bosom to this one, and further alongstream there used to be the last mill, who transported it from this bosom to the Vlist.
