After a refreshment break we held a brief business meeting. President Brian Bissell gave a little Pop Quiz, asking us to identify what he had around his neck. It was his father's old Audubon Bird Call. In the days when a lot of us started birding this piece of equipment was de rigueur. Now it seems to have fallen by the wayside. You cranked it making all sorts of squeaky sounds that were supposed to be irresistible to birds. Most of us now find that pishing works just as well.

I’ve known this little pond for some years now and it is always a walk back to old memories. And what’s better to start year than starting your year with a little refreshment walk in your forest next door. I already knew the good spots to get a decent shot but the way is becoming more and more overgrown by bushes and trees.

I considered doing a "Raider's of the Lost Ark"-style switcheroo.
