Design concept refinements for the interior of a new bank branch to be built inside the shell of a former car dealership. This is a large community room for large seminars or community meetings and events
The department has been building up a library of design related reference books over the last few years. Pupils are encouraged to make use of these books on a regular basis. The photographs here demonstrate the tremendous wealth of content contained therein.
The sequence has been shot in such a way that the cover of the book is shown first and a few sample pages are included to give the student an idea of the content the book contains. Pupils may then approach staff and request a short term loan.

Alex had a unique approach to the production of his design folio work. Alex was constantly drawing. He spent most of his classtime just drawing, even when he was supposed to be doing something else. He needed to draw to think. So what you see here isn't necessarily pretty but this folio is stuffed with ideas. Alex's approach demonstrates precisely and accurately the method of idea generation and refinement promoted by the department. Note the large number of drawings on eachpage. this allows the student to easily cross reference and tag from one idea to the next. Extensive annotation also helps to reveal design thinking and comments should always be relevant and refer back to the specification. It is clear that Alex has a thorough understanding of the more technical aspects of the course and he repeatedly suggests ways in which his concepts might be made.
Alex went on to do very well at Higher Product Design. Some of his work also features on this site. He's now studying maths at Warwick University.
The Fulvia was arguably the last true Lancia. Though Lancia produced some incredible vehicles while under Fiat control, however none of them had the classic combination of refinement and innovation that characterized pre-Fiat models.

Heritage
Many carmakers stand out in the collective memory of vintage auto enthusiasts as having built exceptionally well-engineered cars. Porsche and Lotus, for instance, each built cars not just with passion but also with mathematical precision and distinct purpose. One of the best-engineered marques of automotive history has often been forgotten, though.
It was the carmaker that made pioneering advances in technologies that have today become ubiquitous, including the 'V' engine configuration and unitized body construction. It was the carmaker so concerned with building cars to its own high standards that it ignored the principles cost-effectiveness and doomed itself to financial ruin and a takeover by Fiat. It was the carmaker that, even under Fiat's control, realized sparkling rally success with a car that would have looked at home on Mars. The name of this carmaker, once Italy's most technically advanced brand, is Lancia.
Established in 1906, Lancia quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most innovative carmakers in the world. In 1922 the radical Lancia Lambda was introduced, powered by a V4 and built using unitized construction. Decades later, Lancia's innovative spirit was still alive in the company's products, proven by the Aurelia of 1950 that featured the world's first mass-produced V6 as well as a rear transaxle and rear inboard brakes.
Lancia's expensive pursuit of engineering excellence ended when Fiat took over the debt-laden company in 1969. Before the Fiat takeover, though, Lancia was able to introduce a model that combined crisp Italian styling, capable performance, and advanced technology in a light and lithe package. That model, the Fulvia, was introduced in 1963 and continued in production for years after Fiat took control of ailing Lancia.
The Fulvia was a small, front-wheel-drive Lancia powered by a V4. With sales that surpassed 300,000 units, the Fulvia sold in great numbers for a Lancia yet still was not a financial success. It was produced in several variations until 1976.
The first Fulvia, introduced in 1963, was a sedan with styling by Pietro Castagnero. Its tight, boxy shape exemplified the typically clean lines of small Italian sedans from the 1960's. For 1965, a Fulvia coupe was released. The coupe's styling was every bit as pure as the sedan's, yet the Fulvia coupe's shape was more interesting and unique than was the sedan's somewhat anonymous profile. The coupe was also styled by Castagnero, but was an altogether more successful design than the sedan. The Fulvia sedan was produced until 1972, while the coupe remained in production until 1976.
The V4 that powered the first of the Fulvia sedans displaced only 1,091cc, good for a modest 58bhp. By 1964, power was up to 71bhp from the same displacement in the 2C sedan. This added power was by no means overwhelming, but it was a very impressive figure for such an engine of such diminutive displacement. The high specific output of Lancia's V4 was just one example of the high quality of the Fulvia's engineering. The later Fulvia GT (available with 1,216cc or 1,231cc motors) and GTE (1,298cc) were the most powerful Fulvia sedans.
When the coupe appeared in 1965, it used a V4 with displacement increased to 1,216cc. Output was at a hearty 80bhp. As the coupe aged, Lancia continued to provide sportier trim levels with even more powerful engines. Of these sportier trims, the 1.6 HF was the most impressive. It made 115bhp out of 1,584cc and, thanks in part to its 5-speed gearbox, could reach 112mph.
Another Fulvia coupe variant was the Fulvia Sport. This model was built by Zagato between 1965 and 1972, and featured aerodynamic styling by Ercole Spada coupled with powerful 1,216cc, 1,298cc and 1,584cc engines. Aluminum alloy was used in the construction of Fulvia Zagato bodies (though only early models featured all-alloy bodies), resulting in a lighter car than the Fulvia coupe.
The Lancia Fulvia, in sedan, coupe, and Sport forms, was successful in motor racing. The most notable racing achievements of the Fulvia range were accomplished by coupe models, which were used extensively in rallies. The highlight of the Fulvia's racing career came in 1972 when a Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF won the International Championship for Manufacturers rally series.
Another small refinement, as now the button head fastener flange locates the slinger ring to the crank web. The socket screw is just used to fasten the slinger ring to the upper crank web, and the threads cannot fret or fatigue the slinger ring if it flexes or moved like it could before.
Where heritage meets refinement. Woody Wheat is a masterfully crafted wheat beer, delicately balanced with notes of sun-ripened grain and citrus zest. Cold-fermented and precision-aged, it pours with a luminous golden hue and finishes with a smooth, elegant clarity.
Brewed in small batches. Bottled with intention.

The 'Lewis Gun' was a refinement by U.S. Army Colonel Isaac N. Lewis, of an existing design by another American, Samuel McClean. The resulting Weapon went on to define the 'Light Machine Gun' as a class of Firearm. Machine Guns like the Maxim family could fire more continuously and with accuracy at long range, but were heavy and had to be served by a crew of men. A 'Light' Machine Gun would allow Soldiers to take the Fight to the Enemy. The Lewis was designed with a Rifle-Style Shoulder Stock, Pistol Grip, and Carrying Sling. Instead of a Water-Filled Barrel Jacket, the Lewis was air-cooled using a finned radiator fitted beneath a steel shroud. When fired, this created a 'venturi' effect, sucking the hot air forwards and drawing colder air in behind it. The belt feed system of the Maxim was replaced by a Rotating 'Pan' Magazine, limiting capacity but keeping the Gun light and easy to handle. Importantly, a clamp-on bipod was also designed to allow a stable firing platform, replacing the fixed tripod mount of the Heavy Machine Guns. Though an American design, the United States Army was reluctant to adopt Colonel Lewis's Gun, instead he turned to Europe.
The British Army was the first to adopt the Lewis Gun, which became part of important reforms to the deployment of Machine Guns. The heavy Vickers and Maxim Guns, and their Gun Crews, were taken from the Infantry to form the new 'Machine Gun Corps' they would treat the Vickers more like an Artillery Piece, delivering fire where it was needed to support the Infantry. Meanwhile, Infantry Regiments instead received the Lewis Gun. Firing the same Cartridge as the Vickers and with a similar rate of fire, it was far easier for Soldiers to carry, get set up, and use in the Attack. Along with the Vickers Gun, it enabled the changes in Tactics that led to later British and Allied success. The Lewis Gun also became the first ever Aircraft Machine Gun, fitted in flexible mounts on two-seat spotter aircraft, but also mounted above the wing even on later fighters like the SE5a. The cooling radiator was often removed, as cold air rushing over the barrel made it unnecessary. A bigger, 97 Round Magazine was used to limit the need for frequent and fiddly Magazine changes in moving Aircraft at freezing altitudes.

Aaaand here's my assignment hand-in for this week! It's a relatively quick spline pass. Obviously there's plenty to do so I'm glad we've got an extra week of polish - I have a feeling I'm going to need it!

The result of my first attempts at Sims 3 custom content. Clearly it is still a work in progress but it is coming along well. The eyes are fully recolorable --- I intend to add non default fully recolorable versions of the eyes as well as custom unique skintones--- I personally like the lips and cheek area.The lips are a lot softer and more natural looking, though not nearly as good as I want. You can also see the pores on the cheeks and they look rather natural so that is a success.

This one is not finished yet : I will have to do some more refinements, especially on Mastodon's cranial morphologies in order to fully complete this drawing.
All those monochrome drawings of mine will then be digitally colored in the future, at least thus planned.

(The Borson's mastodon was not only the largest out of the family Mammutidae, but also one of the most powerfully built proboscidea ever appeared, being greatly surpassing any Mammuthus, Elephas and Loxodonta in terms of skeletal robustness and muscularity. Its almost straight, over 5m long tusks were probably the longest ever in the history of proboscidea)

(Relatively small and long limbed rhino that was closely related to extant Sumatran rhino)

(Smaller than northern and western European variation but comparable in size to large male Kruger lions of today. Homotherium sp. along with Lokotunjailurus sp. was one of very few machairodonts(so called sabertoothed cats) that were adapting to cursoliality rather than to being specialized grapplers)

(One of the largest and most carnivorous bears of all time)

(Although the colloquial name suggests otherwise, this was in fact, not true mastodon but a member of the family Gomphothridae)

The effects of grain refinement alloying additions in commercial purity aluminium. The ingot has small additions of titanium and boron. Grain refinement results from heterogeneous nucleation of aluminium grains at the insoluble TiB2 particles.

The Nomura sought for further refinement by using paulownia for the design of alcove panels and Indian ironwood frames, features which were fairly unusual for the time, for the sliding thick-paper doors that open up the room to the garden.
The garden inside the residence has a Japanese bayberry over 400 years old and a meandering stream surrounded by ancient and strangely shaped rocks.
