The Basilica Notre-Dame in Montreal, Canada, is an early 19th century Neo-Gothic church of great beauty and artistic refinement. The Word spoken from the chancel (in the foreground) is visually supported by the sculpture of one of the prophets and by the light of the divine (blue).
Westport (Irish: Cathair na Mart, meaning "stone fort of the beeves", historically anglicised as Cahernamart) is a town in County Mayo in Ireland. It is at the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland. Westport is a popular tourist destination and scores highly for quality of life. It won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition three times in 2001, 2006 and 2008. In 2012 it won the Best Place to Live in Ireland competition run by The Irish Times.
The design for the town was commissioned in the 1780s by the John Browne of the nearby stately home, Westport House, as a place for his workers and tenants to live. John Browne cleared the original village of Cahernamart, that had 700 inhabitants, to make way for his gardens at Westport House.
The current town centre was originally designed by William Leeson in 1780, in the Georgian architectural style. Its layout follows the medieval principles of urban design introduced by the Normans in the 13th century. A particular feature is the incorporation of the river into the composition, contained for two blocks by low stone walls producing, on each side of the river, tree lined promenades (The Mall) with several stone bridges over the river Carrow Beg. The layout further includes several tree lined streets, addressed by the narrow fronted commercial buildings typical of Irish towns, though with many here remaining of a singular refinement and charm. Some modern interventions, such as the Garda station, are less successful in maintaining the original continuity of the urban fabric.
The famous pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, known locally as "the Reek", lies some 10 km west of the town near the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. The mountain forms the backdrop to the town.

Ebbing tide in a canal behind Richmond oil refineries left beds of exposed mud for the birds, and just a narrow channel for me to paddle in. Butane for the refinement process is stored under pressure in spherical tanks, and the scene reminded me of a 1950s sci-fi book cover.

The building’s flying buttresses and large stained-glass windows reveal its medieval inspiration, though many elements have been carefully restored to preserve its grandeur. Standing before it, one senses the weight of centuries of history imprinted on its walls.
Historically, Lille has been a crossroads between France and Flanders, and this church embodies that layered past. The city shifted hands multiple times between French and Flemish rulers, and such monuments served not only as places of worship but also as symbols of civic pride and resilience. The Gothic style, widespread across northern Europe, reflects the influence of Flemish builders, yet the decorative details and urban prominence anchor it firmly within the French tradition. This dual identity is etched into every carved arch and sculpted pinnacle.
Beyond its architecture, the church connects to Lille’s broader cultural fabric. The surrounding streets carry the imprint of both Flemish and French heritage, evident in the tall brick houses and ornate façades nearby. The church itself often acted as a gathering point for festivals, processions, and markets, reinforcing its role as the heart of local community life. Its endurance is a reminder of Lille’s capacity to weave together different influences without losing its distinct character.
That same blend is mirrored in the city’s cuisine. The Flemish tradition contributes hearty stews like carbonnade flamande made with beer, while French culinary refinement brings delicacies such as pâtés and fine pastries. Dishes such as moules-frites or rich cheeses from northern France find their place alongside Flemish waffles and beers. Just as the church stands as a testament to the merging of two cultures in stone and glass, Lille’s food tells the same story through flavor and tradition.

1939 Bentley 4¼ Liter Drophead Tourer Coachwork by Vanden Plas.
Walter O. Bentley's company was purchased by Rolls-Royce, Ltd. in 1931 and moved from Cricklewood, London to Rolls' Derby works. The Bentley cars produced from 1933 through 1939 are known as the 'Derby Bentleys.' The first of these was based on the current-series Rolls-Royce 202/25-horsepower chassis but was reconfigured to use the 20/25's 2.75-liter engine. The 126-inch bare chassis left the factory to be bodied by outside coachbuilders.
The new 4.25-Litre (4,257cc) model, introduced in 1936, had an increase in power over the previous model while retaining the well-proven chassis with servo-assisted braking and faultless gear-change. This new engine was shared with the equivalent Rolls-Royce, the 25/30hp, and as had been the case with the preceding 3½-Litre model, was a superior specification in Bentley form, fitted with twin SU carburetors, raised compression ratio, and a more 'sporting' camshaft. Equipped with twin SU carburetors, the 4,257cc overhead valve inline 6-cylinder engine delivered 126 horsepower at 4,500 RPM. The introduction of the Hall's Metal bearings would eventually lead to an adoption of an overdrive gearbox and improved lubrication system, improvements which coincided with the introduction of the 'M' series cars in 1939. Approximately 200 examples were produced during 1939 (a total of 1,234 examples during its production lifespan), and they were renowned for their reliability, refinement, and long-distance cruising capabilities.
This Bentley 4.25 Litre is one of the most famous Derby Bentleys. It was fitted with striking open tourer 'cut-down door' - style coachwork by Vanden Plas of London and finished in a color scheme that earned it the nickname of 'Honeysuckle.' The 4.25 Litre was originally ordered by Captain E. Molyneaux with coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly, which was almost immediately removed and placed on another Bentley owned by Molyneaux. Vanden Plas then made this replacement body, which was delivered in June of 1939. After the Second World War ended, it was owned for a short time by William Douglas-Home, the playwright and brother of the former British Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

No larger than about an inch these are 4 pieces of a larger collection of Japanese carvings know as Netsuke collection. These carvings epitomise certain Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and have fascinated peopled around the world since the country opened up in the 1960s. The attention given to this humble accessory which secured personal belongings to the obi(sash or belt) of a kimono reflects the preciousness of everyday objects.They express the refinement of traditional techniques and understanding material as well as the unique and exotic imaginations of Japanese artists in portraying natural, mythical, whimsical and grotesque subjects.

When iron is smelted from its ore, it contains more carbon than is desirable. To become steel, it must be reprocessed to reduce the carbon to the correct amount, at which point other elements can be added. In the past, steel facilities would cast the raw steel product into ingots which would be stored until use in further refinement processes that resulted in the finished product. In modern facilities, the initial product is close to the final composition and is continuously cast into long slabs, cut and shaped into bars and extrusions and heat-treated to produce a final product. Today, approximately 96% of steel is continuously cast, while only 4% is produced as ingots
Testing a new lightpainting gadget to enable a flashgun to display four colours at once in four quarters. It's not perfect and needs some refinement but I'll be out in the dark with this soon!
Facade of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Tuscania. This church is at the foot of the hill of St Peter, where the Church of San Pietro stands.
According to an Information sign about the Santa Maria Maggiore church posted by the Commune di Tuscania: Of Romanesque structure, the church dates to the 8th century and was rebuilt between the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century, with subsequent refinement until acquiring its present day 3-nave form.
In the facade, local tuff is the predominant stone, and the overall disordered and asymmetrical decoration of the facade is likely the result of re-adaptation of parts repaired as required after various earthquakes. The singular posture of the Madonna in the bezel of the access portal with her feet hanging on the architrave is an example. The right portal is decorated with classic inspirational foliage, while the arch on the left has a Norman-Sicilian ornament. At the top between a lion and a griffin, there is a loggia with its nine columns and ten arches. Finally the rich rose window frame has two orders of 12 columns at he corners of which are sculptures of the symbols of the four Evanglists: eagle (St John), angel (St Matthew), lion (St Mark), and calf (St. Luke).

I made seven bracketed shots just after sunrise for this image. I used Photoshop HDR to merge five or six of them, I don't remember exactly. It was my third merge including one in Lightroom. I don't do HDR very often, and I still seem to have to bring down highlights and bring up shadows quiet a bit in my merged photo. In my mind HDR should be perfect for situations like this where the sky is much brighter than the foreground and subject. I still need some more refinement with using it though.
Anyway, I set up my tripod close in the alley next to the house. The house is on a slight hill relative to the alley so it makes it easy to get a low perspective that highlights the porch and gables. I think those are the most interesting features of the house. The house is currently used by the Warren County Foundation that makes grants to over 100 charities in the area.

"This house sits on lot No. 29 in the original 1802 plat of Lebanon. In 1805 the land was bought by William Ferguson, the town's first postmaster. Ferguson owned the Indian Chief Tavern. This inn was located one block to the west where the City Building's parking lot is today. Lot No. 29 remained Ferguson's until his death in 1831. The west side of lot No. 29 was sold in 1856. Four years later, this house was built in the Gothic Revival architectural variation known as Carpenter Gothic. The cottage's steep gables with their gingerbread bargeboard typify this mid-1800s style. The alley to the west is one of four that divided Lebanon's original 100 lots."
