In the previous photograph I showed you the moment when the light from our sun is getting near to crossing our horizon and bringing its warming rays to bear on the landscape. It needed to since it was freezing out here under the cloudless starry sky.

Here we have turned around 180 degrees from where the previous shot was taken and can see the old lighthouse in all its glory. Lights blazing still. No problems with focus this time, but my hands are still numb.

As this series unfolds over coming days I'll give you more information about the Low Head Lighthouse. For the moment though it is suffice to say that this is the third lighthouse built in Australia (and the second in Tasmania), and a light has been running continuously here since 1833. The current tower, however, dates from 1888.

This is our final look at the Low Head Lighthouse. It stands here in all its glory showing off the red stripe that was added in 1926. As I've indicated before, this Victorian lighthouse was built in 1888 to replace the 1833 convict built tower that was in danger of collapsing. It is Australia's third oldest continually existing lighthouse.

For those who haven't seen the entire slideshow I have posted it below with the accompanying song "Let Your Light Shine on Me".

In these three photos I'll be playing around with reflections. No deep word reflections today, simply reflected images. I hope you enjoy them.

Here we see the Low Head Lighthouse with its prominent red stripe reflected in the window of the foghorn shed.

The red stripe was added to the Low Head Lighthouse in northern Tasmania in 1926. The main reason was to increase daytime visibility from the sea. Of course that massive foghorn (the only one in Tasmania) sounded whenever the lighthouse itself was not visible.

The thornbush you can see in the foreground is extremely sharp. I know because when I took those dawn shots here last winter (it was almost zero degrees Celsius) I cut myself and didn't feel a thing until my camera was covered in blood. But these bushes serve an important purpose. They provide shelter for a colony of Little Penguins, protecting them from any marauding dogs.

I've taken some liberties with this piece of photo art. The lighthouse is of course the Low Head Lighthouse at the entrance to the Tamar River in northern Tasmania. The bronze sculpture which I call here "The Lighthouse Keeper" is in fact a piece of work by the late Irish sculptor, Jeanne Rynhart (1946-2020). I put them together because the colour palette seemed so complementary.

The bronze is in our personal collection, number 6 of just 250 of "The Old Seaman" cast at her County Cork studio. It is a delightful piece standing at 18cms high. Rynhart is most famous for the public sculpture of Molly Malone in Dublin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Malone), and of Annie Moore at Ellis Island in New York. In 1892 Annie Moore was the first immigrant to the United States to pass through federal immigrant inspection at the Ellis Island station in New York Harbor. www.history.com/news/remembering-annie-moore-ellis-island...

Sadly, Jeanne Rynhart passed away at the age of 74 just last year. www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/jeanne-rynhart-o...

Macro and a good point of view.

The Low Head Lighthouse was built on the centenary of Australian British settlement, and exactly 84 years after a navigation beacon was first established at this point. This is probably my favourite of the many Tasmanian lighthouses, although the inaccessibility of Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse, has meant I am yet to see it in person. lighthouses.org.au/tas/maatsuyker-island-lighthouse/

But there is something special about Low Head. The fact that it is the oldest in Tasmania (and this current lighthouse is the third oldest continually used lighthouse in the country) is a factor. But architecturally it is the classic Victorian lighthouse design: Simplicity of form and perfection of function. I'll tell you more about the lighthouse and its unique red stripe in coming days.

But just a word about the great foghorn you see protruding from the shed next to the light itself.

It is unique, and "Tasmania's only foghorn (also manufactured by Chance Brothers) is a Type G diaphone that was installed in April 1929 at Low Head Lighthouse. The foghorn was operated by the lighthouse keepers during foggy conditions for more than forty years. The original device consisted of two Gardner Engine Company kerosene engines driving 2 Reavell air compressors, supplying air to two compressed air receivers (each with a capacity of 7.5 cubic metres (260 cu ft) to an operating pressure of 35 pounds per square inch (240 kPa). An air-operated timing mechanism controlled the valves which produced the sound, which could be heard at distances of up to 32 kilometers (20 mi) from Low Head. The foghorn was electrified in 1940, along with the rest of the equipment at the lightstation. At that time, one of the kerosene engines was removed and replaced with a 20-horsepower electric motor."

I'll show you a glimpse of the air compressors later.

This photograph "The Light on the Hill" has just been published in Issue 445 of the UK Magazine Photography Week. It is one of four photographs in "Gallery Xposure: The Week's Most Inspiring Reader Photos".

***************************************************************

The hill upon which the Low Head Lighthouse stands is high enough to allow the light to be projected some 43 kilometres (23 nautical miles) out to sea. One can see then how powerful the lens assembly is. It is a Fresnel lens made in England by Wilkins and Company. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_lens

The only thing that would be different in this photograph from the late 1880s is the red stripe. This was added in 1926 to enhance daytime visibility.

Here at last the bright sun has fully illuminated the Low Head Lighthouse as it stands on the hill looking out to sea. This is the classic postcard view.

The lighthouse is Australia's third oldest and a beacon has run here since 1805 not long after the settlement of Port Dalrymple (now George Town) in northern Tasmania. In 1833 a permanent lighthouse was established and the beautiful stone building on the right is the only surviving structure of that complex.

The current lighthouse itself was built in 1888 to replace the original convict structure. In 1926 the broad red band was painted to the tower to aid visibility during the day. Originally the light was powered by a system that involved whale oil, but in 1916 this was replaced by a kerosene mantle light and maintained by a full time lighthouse keeper. In 1940 the light was electrified.

This was also one of the last fully automated lighthouses in Australia. A lightkeeper was not replaced until 1995.

Bound for Chicago, a Metra train sprints through Wheaton on a wintry Sunday morning. My intention had been to continue with my Thai agricultural series but, with the recent onslaught of arctic air here in the Upper Midwest, I decided to temporarily put the rice on ice :) Stay warm friends! Or, if you live in a warm climate, ice versa :)
