Swimming in an area of sunlit lake Ontario during a cold evening. It's tough to colour balance the head of this bird with the orange and yellow sunset light, even so I love the detail in this bird!

They're back.

Red-headed woodpecker, Rondeau Provincial Park, May 7, 2023.

We finally have a pair of red-heads back in the yard. Hopefully the will nest in the trees behind us again.

Melanerpes erythrocephalus.

The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of only four North American woodpeckers known to store food, and it is the only one known to cover the stored food with wood or bark. It hides insects and seeds in cracks in wood, under bark, in fenceposts, and under roof shingles. Grasshoppers are regularly stored alive, but wedged into crevices so tightly that they cannot escape.

Thank you most kindly for stopping by to view my work.

If you find you have a few words to say about what I have done they will be much appreciated.

My best regards to you.... Martin

A drake Redhead (Aythya americana) in the moult stage. It is not the majestic bird shown in bird identification guides but a necessary part of the annual cycle for these birds. It was observed on a small wetland west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

This male Redhead and the female I posted yesterday may have been boyfriend and girlfriend. Though I didn't get any good shots of them together, they did seem rather taken with each other.

Like many other duck species, the males are readily identifiable whereas the females are less conspicuous.

A self portrait of Di… a little nod to the bright red hair I had in younger days, it’s a bit faded now!

Caught this Northern Pintail traveling with some Redheads. Although he looked rather dashing, they weren't interested.

The Redheads were very close as the Ice was expanding in Bronte Harbour during January and February.

In migration and winter, look for Redheads in large rafts, often with other species including Canvasbacks, scaup, wigeon, and American Coots. They usually dive for their food, although they use shallower water than other diving ducks and may feed by tipping up, like a dabbling duck.
