I'd like you to believe that I captured this dragonfly in flight. That's what I'd like you to believe. In reality, it was sitting on water probably near death. It couldn't escape. So I, being brave, put a stick in the water and the dragonfly climbed on. I put him on the boardwalk to dry. He later flew off.

Here's a different angle on that first shot. Note the change in the eyes. It's almost as if he's alarmed at seeing the huge guy with the big lens. Adds certain meaning to the term "Bug Eyed."
Red Dragonfly on a red flowering stalk of Croscomia "Lucifer" flower plant.
I am delightedly surprised to see this type and color of Dragonfly that I last saw half a world away, in tropical Bangladesh !!! Out of all places, in Newcastle, Washington (State) !!! At a Fruit & Produce & Nursery Stand, sitting on an also deep red blooming stalk of a Croscomia "Lucifer" flower plant !!! What a sight that was!!! At first I thought it was a lawn ornament, then it moved and flicked its wings! And I was like, "Oh my Gosh! IT IS REAL!" I ran back to my car to grab my camera and snapped a few pics. Here are a few. They are fun to watch.

White-faced Meadowhawk (Sympetrum obtrusum) Dragonfly - Rollins Savanna, Lake County Forest Preserve District, near Grayslake, IL - 22 August 2009
Meadowhawks often bask with their wings held forward, with their abdomens pointing into the wind, much as a primitive weather vane.
Clever little acrobatic carnivores these dragonflies. Taken here in late summer at the Malhuer national wildlife refuge.
My daughter pointed this red dragonfly out to me as we walked back from the hotsprings. Don't know the name of it. I'm glad she saw it.
