In Japan, seeing a red dragonfly (akatonbo) means fall is very close. I have seen several in August and this is the first good picture I have of one this year. It was on a concrete stand for vending machines near a bank in downtown Kitahiroshima. Dragonflies seem to be very brave around humans (or stupid).

Spring is when these prehistoric creatures crawl from their watery homes and transform into winged creatures before setting off in search of prey and later a mate (or mates?). There are many varieties, the biggest I have seen pass my nose seemed to have a wingspan of 10-12 cm! By now in early November the daylight is shorter and normally the temperature is cooler. But today is about 22 degrees C and dozens of the big fliers float here and there.

I loved how this dragonfly was in a flight position, and hanging on to this stem. Isolino wanted to go to Bass Pro in Manteca, and of course this is where we look for these dragonflies. Sometimes we are just hanging onto a small line of defense. All around us is chaos, and seemingly dark imaginings. Hang on. Hope is there. Life goes on, and help is on the way. Look up, draw near to God, and He will draw near to you, and then your circumstances will be seen in a different light. God bless you all

A dragonfly is a type of insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies are similar to damselflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at rest. Even though dragonflies possess 6 legs (like any other insect), they are not capable of walking.

Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic.

Red dragonfly, libélula Roja

It's a windy day. Travelling seemed pretty difficult for any flying insects. Certainly, it's not hard to imagine it also became more challenging for me to capture a photo. In the time of awaiting her to rest, my eyeballs were forced to fly with her and gradually I learned to enjoy watching her flying skills with the four fragile vellum-like beautiful wings by not fighting against wind. Dot by dot, she just danced like a ballerina.

every year we seem to have resident dragonflies at the pond. They were here today, mating and laying eggs in the water.

This video is quite interesting. This dragonfly was busy feeding when I approach and started to film him. He always comes back to land on the same leaf to devour his insect prey.

In the late summer of 2004 there were tons of these small dragonflies around my family's cottage.

Some were even so tame as to land on my foot.

This is where I got the name of "Red Dragonfly".

Had to do a few work-related errands this afternoon but since it was so beautiful out, I decided to stop at the nearby ice cream stand for an afternoon snack before returning to my office. While I was standing in the shade, under a tree, this flash of red flew past me and landed on a nearby bush! And yes, of course I had my camera in the car... and grabbed it with one hand while holding the ice cream cone, melting fast, in the other hand. I managed to take about five one-handed macro shots, trying to ignore the dripping ice cream, before he spread his wings and sped away. After enjoying what was left of my ice cream cone, I washed off all the stickies and returned to work.

Isn't it great when a Daily Shoot assignment just lands right in front of your face like that! ;-)
