Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species. Sometimes a symbiotic relationship benefits both species, sometimes one species benefits at the other's expense, and in other cases neither species benefits.

The image intrigues me. It appears that a relationship exists between these different species of moth caterpillars. My first assumption is that they are indeed different species and not different instars of the same species as their appearance and morphology seem too dissimilar. The larger (and more advanced) Lasiocampid caterpillars on the right I have encountered regularly recently as a large cryptic mass on tree trunks. I have also encountered the caterpillars on the left (likely tussock moths (Lymantriinae, Erebidae)) as individuals of various instars on their own.

In this situation, the huddle of large caterpillars was completely surrounded by these attendant smaller ones. Is this simply an opportunistic 'safety in numbers' phenomenon? Or is there a deeper symbiotic connection in place?
