This is a photo of Marc Sijan's sculpture Reciprocity; one of my favorite pieces in the GRAM exhibition [Dis]comfort Zones.

Crossed over into Argentina today and paid their 'Reciprocity Fee'. The fee is a 'steep' $US 78 ... But it is good for ten years, in case we come back. And that just might happen, after seeing Cataratas del Iguazú

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iguazu_Falls

The beavers seem to have abandoned their old lodge and dams; while exposing this I noticed the new (I think) lodge upstream.

I forgot to consider reciprocity failure compensation for this film, and the shadows are mighty thin on this negative.

On May 10th 2024 many of us looked up at the evening sky and experienced an outer-worldly light show as the northern lights danced more vividly and further south than we have ever witnessed before.

Having no previous experience shooting aurora on film I had very low expectations and chalked it up to a fun experiment that would likely result in complete failure. I was elated when I pulled my roll out of the developing bath and saw bands of colour streaking across the sky.

Having no immediate feedback of a screen made it impossible to know if my exposure times were adequate at the time of the event. I also rarely shoot film faster than 100ISO, but luckily had a few rolls of 400 speed Kodak Portra in the freezer. Despite the significant reciprocity failure of Portra it's all I had on hand on such short notice and I decided to give it a go. In hind sight shooting E100 and pushing it 2-stops may have been a valid alternative.

Taming Light #38

Under the light of the permanent blue moon (actually it's a ball of plasma) the

construction workers are on double bonus to complete the first 'City of Light' early. With all apartments and offices completely sold out and with the first occupants already on their way planning permission has already been sought and granted for the next two cities.

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a single beam of white light beam passing through specially shaped and textured transparent forms. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object(s) in its place. Colours are introduced by placing complex coloured optical filters directly in the light beam.

The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

Those of you who know me know that I am a Flickr stats freak, so I cannot help but weigh in on the current controversy in Flickr world.

It has come to the attention of many, perhaps because the data can now be readily seen here, that posting into certain groups will greatly increase your chances of getting into Explore, and if in Explore anyway, will increase your chances of a high rank and even front page. I think the daily data from the link above empirically confirms these hypotheses.

This has led some to protest, claiming that these "Explore Ramp Groups" are counter to the spirit of Flick and "good photography". This group is a good sampling of negative sentiment. On the other hand, proponents of these groups believe that this is what a Flickr group is supposed to be like, and that these are one of a handful of functional groups on Flickr.

The three groups that are often cited are Wink's Place,Golden Garden, and L'amicizia fa la differenza. I'd also add The World Through My Eyes,Karma, FlickrCentral, FlickrToday, and Better Than Good. Of course these trends come and go. Are year or two ago it was A+++ Photo and Utata which were the must-post groups.

First my personal opinion, and then an analysis.

I am all about getting my photos seen, no matter how. All my stuff is Creative Commons, and I expect one day I'll be in a different country and I'll see someone selling a poster with one of my images. And it would tickle me pink (and I'd figure out a way to get famous from it too). I have blogged here that Flickr Award groups have horrible reciprocity, and non-award groups are even worse. So question: Do I want to post a picture to a group that looks at my pictures, or not? Answer is yes for me. Further, I really don't care what the heck my contacts do or don't do, to each their own. All I care about is how good their photos are and how well they treat me.

Why do these groups infer advantage? Because they have reciprocity--when you post to them, there is an expectation that you will comment and fave other pics. When I post to them I generally comment/fave 5 others, same as I would in an award group. The "brilliance" of these groups is that they don't require reciprocity as a rule, it's just the collective norm. The increased views, comments, faves, and the associated ratios all work in favor of increasing interestingness. You have to remember that the difference between #1 in Explore and #501 (not being in Explore) is like 99.99999 to 99.99998, so any tiny positive advantage can make a big difference.

Opponents argue that this leads to faves and comments given to inferior pictures. I don't give faves or comments to bad pictures (unless they're from my contacts!), and I have no trouble finding excellent photos in these groups. Again, to each their own...

UPDATE: I have been banned from L'Amicizia fa la differenza! They say I violated their rules. As this is my most recent shot, and there are no nudes or profanity, I guess this must be because this post is considered "political"? That's odd, considering that the text above is positive for the groups... So so interesting...

UPDATE 2: I have been banned from Golden Garden too now! Here's what the group says about its rules: "There isn't rules! This group is free but, no nude, no porn, good manners an comment and fave what you like in the Pool!" Hmm. I guess there are rules. Again I find it interesting that a post in favor of these groups is met with such negativism. Why oh why?

UPDATE 3: L'Amicizia fa la differenza has unbanned me! Apparently, due to language difficulties, they thought I was attacking their group in the post above. If only we all spoke Esparanto.

As Flickr Turns...

UPDATE 4: I am going to make a bold statement and say--

EXPLORE IS DOING WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO DO, BUT THEIR ALGORITHM IS MAKING AN INCORRECT ASSUMPTION...

If I was a Flickr Designer, I would make Explore a strong function of Interestingness, but I would also like to get a good variety of people in there. How do I do that? By picking people who generally aren't connected to one another as contacts. In these groups the norm is that you get a lot of views and comments and faves from people who aren't your contacts, hence, people posting to these groups would have the double advantage of increased interestingness yet not connected to one another.

How do you fix, if you wanted to fix it? By also choosing pics for Explore that tended to not be in the same groups. Computationally it's a bit harder but nothing a good graph theorist couldn't figure out.

UPDATE 5: I've been tallying some stats on these groups. I don't think the average number of comments is different than in the "5" award groups like Flickr Hearts or Global Village 2. There may be a higher proportion of faves, hard to say. But the comment that is going around that somehow everyone who posts to these groups is getting 25 faves is ridiculous.

So, a few comments on getting an 8x10 ready to use and using it.

First, it wasn't really in horrible shape. The bellows are sound. The movements, such as they are, moved. It needed a good cleaning and patching all the holes in it. It was purchased with a beautiful 300mm Schneider lens. But, it had no shutter. As you can see, the hole in the board is way, way larger than a Copal #3 shutter. And there were a couple holes, both in the front standard and in the 3 lens boards, that looked like they were used to trigger some sort of shutter that sat behind the lens. I have found exactly zero references to this. But I plugged up the holes and mounted a different Schneider lens, with a Copal shutter and mounted on a much smaller Linhoff board, with copious amounts of duct tape.

I loaded two film holders which was an adventure in and of itself. My changing bag was a poor choice as the 8x10 film holder took up way more than half the width (or length) of the bag and it was really cramped in there. I even had a bit of trouble getting the triple box open and stacked. I damaged one sheet which I discovered when I developed it and misloaded another which I discovered when I pulled the dark slide and heard the film falling into the camera.

My general impression of the camera and the format:

Some wise man once said, "Problems of scale are real." And this format proves it pretty obviously. I remember having to learn pretty much everything I thought I knew when I first switched from medium format to 4x5. I think the jump from 4x5 to 8x10 is at least as hard on the confident photographer. EVERYTHING is so much more difficult. Form the simple task of carrying, setting up and handling the camera to setting up and making a shot. DoF becomes just ridiculously thin and the distance at which you no longer worry about it is much farther than you think. With no shift (only front rise/fall) composition become more of a chore with this camera. And having only back base tilt (with nothing to tell you when the camera is zeroed out save a small pendulum similar to a clock hand hanging from a tack in the side of the back) added yet another critical step to setting up a shot.

I had two fairly bad exposures. It was a close scene in a wooded area. I think I overestimated the DoF I would get once I stopped down. There was no way to get the important elements in focus on the ground glass at f/5.6. I think I also had some issues with camera shake as the lens had no cable socket and I had to open and close the shutter by pressing the shutter release lever. I tried using both the two press and the press and hold technique (4 second exposure with reciprocity failure figured in) and neither had a single sharp area. But I'm certain that the farther element in the composition would not have been in focus regardless of my shutter technique.

Tray developing was not much different than 4x5. I was still just completely in awe of the size of the film. I was pleased with the one exposure (next image in this stream) that was shot in full sun late in the day. The detail in both sun and shadow is really amazing and my critical focus seems just fine.

I do recommend this to anyone interested. Just beware, it's not a walk in the fen.

Taming Light #3

Continuing the quest to create 'scenes' out of the refraction patterns formed by light passing through 'constructions' of shaped and moulded plastics.

I saw this as a floating group of seeds drifting over a distant planet searching for a fertile landing site. You may have a different interpretation.;-)

For new viewers: these are analog images formed directly on to film without the use of a camera lens (in the same way as a photogram), of the refraction patterns of light passing through formed and shaped plastics. Normally a b/w image, colour has

been added directly into the plastic. The fine detail of the diffraction patterns and the rainbow colours can be seen when viewed large.

The Ebb & Flow Of Life…

“For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.

All of life is about movement.

We have moments of peace and ease, a few ripples in the waves, and moments of turbulence or breaking waves. The turbulence is like a bump in the road that reminds us to buckle our seat-belts, reach for inner strength to weather the storm, and remember a shift of events eventually comes. We wake up every day and focus our energies on our responsibilities and our dreams; we nurture our families, we blog, we work, we reach out to our friends and there is an expectation of reciprocity; that life and others will reward us for the good that comes from our actions. Sometimes we reap the rewards of our labor immediately – we gain something, and sometimes, there is a waiting period that might/might not come – we lose something. Often, grace is in the doing; that we have done our work is its own blessing and everything else is the bonus our actions have attracted.

Just go with the flow…

Taken near low tide at the A.F. Theriault & Son Boatyard, here's "Simon-D" resting on the bottom mud, with "Rafatam" moored behind. "Reciprocity", the dragger with the yellow dories, is at the dock on the left. She was built at this yard in 1966.

The original image was taken with a Nikon F3-HP, Nikon 35mm f2.8 lens, on Kodak Gold 100 negative film. It was copied with a Nikon D3500 camera, Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 lens fitted with a Nikon 4T close-up lens, with a Sigma 1.6x achromatic close-up lens on the 4T. Lighting was provided by a 5000K LED bulb in a small goose-neck table lamp. A large ground glass screen was placed between the lamp and the film holder.

……………………………………………………………………….

A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

post Scriptum:

- the images with Danilo Dolci come from the Casa Cuseni archive: they are cuttings from original periodicals, often full pages, from English newspapers, carefully preserved by Miss Daphne Phelp; these images were also taken by photographing some pages of James McNeish's book, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- the photographs taken in various countries of Sicily, are prior to the covid-19 pandemic;

- thanks to the surgeon colleague dr. Franco Spadaro and his kind wife, Mrs. Mimma Cundari, owners of Casa Cuseni (declared in 1998, Italian National Monument), for their hospitality and availability, having made the Danilo Dolci archive available to me.

post scriptum:

- le immagini con Danilo Dolci provengono dall'archivio di Casa Cuseni: sono ritagli di giornali originali dell'epoca, spesso pagine intere, provenienti da quotidiani inglesi, accuratamente conservati dalla signorina Daphne Phelp; tali immagini sono state realizzate fotografando anche alcune pagine del libro di James McNeish, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- le fotografie realizzate in diversi paesi della Sicilia, sono antecedenti alla pandemia da covid-19;

Bending Light #78

For new viewers: these 'Refractographs' are analogue images of the refraction patterns of a single beam of light passing through various transparent objects. This is a double refraction or recursive pattern - it is formed by passing the refraction pattern of one of my coloured plastic creations through a piece of glassware to make another, more complex pattern. The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used ( this is a photogram using film instead of photographic paper), the transparent object replaces the lens. The tangled fragmented background consists of complex diffraction patterns. This is an analogue image and has not been computer generated.

Refractograph S171-6

For new viewers: these 'Refractographs' are analogue images of the refraction patterns of a single beam of light passing through various transparent objects (in this case a piece of textured plastic and resin). The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used; the transparent object replaces the lens. Colour, in this case, has been added by positioning coloured filters within the optical beam. This is an analogue image and has not been computer generated. The colours you see are a faithful reproduction of those captured on film.

There is no movement of lights - a single static white light source is used. Also there is no camera movement involved - the image is captured in-camera with a single short exposure

Taming Light #19

This is the 'Flickr Virus', a microvirus that is affecting so many throughout the world. Little is known about its structure and how it is transmitted, although recent work indicates that it is a small sphere of energy (possibly light) that travels via the internet. Infection usually occurs soon after a Flickr 'Pro Account' has been acquired.

Symptoms:

1. The patient has a craving for 'viewings' and 'comments' on his/her images and develops a compulsion to upload images to satisfy this need.

2. Obsessive checking for inclusion in 'Scout' and 'Explore'.

3. A compelling desire to add the tag 'interestingness'.

Treatment:

There is no real effective or permanent cure. Total abstinence from Flickr may work for short periods while the patient returns to a normal life style but this is usually only a temporary situation. Long term research, funding, and recognition as an illness is needed.

Of course this might just be another one of my 'Refractographs' created out of light and only an image on your computer screen to be treated as a a bit of fun. On the other hand don't stare at it for too long or view large - it could be contagious! ;)

MicroWorld #19. The adventure continues.

Within a picosecond their visors had reacted, protecting them from the blinding flash as the nearest of the suns exploded in a cataclysmic outburst of energy. Already the neutrinos had passed both through them and the planet and were now well on their way deep into the MicroWorld planetary system. But it was the high energy x-rays and gamma rays now heading towards them that concerned them most. They estimated that they had twenty minutes left to reach the craft; their only hope of safety now was being inside with the force shields deployed.

Their faithful craft shone like a beacon, reflecting the light from the death throes of the sun, as it beckoned them across the rocky terrain. The ship had been their companion on all their adventures as they faced, and overcame, many perils together. It, like them, was now getting old and although sturdy it did not have the sophistications of the newer vessels in the fleet. It had protected them before but now its most demanding challenge was but minutes away.

They began to sweat as the cooling coils in their suits began to fail. The ambient temperature was now rising fast and the physical effort in trying to hurry was beginning to take its toll. Their visors began to mist up but they could still, for the moment at least, see where they were supposed to be heading. As they stumbled nearer the craft it seemed strange, it's colour was different. Their first thoughts were that the illumination from the suns had changed but, as they approached the main hatch they could see that the outer skin was etched and pitted. Although only moderate pitting was evident it was enough to change the reflectivity of the foamed silicon nitride insulation panels giving a somewhat duller appearance. The strange snow that had etched the mountains had also etched their craft!

They transmitted a signal to open the hatch - nothing! They tried again - still nothing! They began to sweat even more as their heart rates began to rise - they were now beginning to panic! Although they could not see them, the streams of high energy particles from the nuclear explosion that was once a sun, were now only a few minutes away. No way could they survive out in the open once these arrived. A desperate third attempt was as successful as the other two, the door remained closed. Their only chance was to manually open the bolts and locks of the emergency hatch, but these too were seized up. In desperation they struck the levers with rocks which simply shattered and disintegrated. One of them fumbled about in his rucksack and, with his geological hammer pounded at the levers. Quickly the others joined in, their hammers clanging at the metal like frenzied blacksmiths. Slowly the levers began to turn and, after some fearful moments, the first two locks gradually opened. The remaining two were easier and with all their combined efforts they managed to swing open the outer door and collapse into the air lock. The door slammed behind them with a thud accompanied by the reassuring whine of the pumps as the air pressure began to automatically equalize.

Outside, through the hatch window they could see strange things happening in the sky, but they concentrated in getting through the air lock into the relative safety of the main control room. The force shields must work first time for them - there would be no second chance!

To be continued...

For new readers, if you want to read the whole story it begins here or you can dip in anywhere into the adventure in this MicroWorld set.

HAPPINESS FOR ME

Happiness for me is to be able to wake up every day per the same morning and that its sleep is minimum, is to see that God gave eyes to me to make out, heard to see, sense of smell to feel the odor of the good things of the life. Happiness for me is to be able to have inspiration to write; exactly without pleasing to everything and all. I agree that it does not have an accurate measure. But when if it is happy, the measure is the certainty. Happiness for me is to be able to receive the affection from mine. Happiness, for me, is God to have given me to the chance to choose my friends and to talk every day with them, as I make now, with you. "Alexander Hall. The original building of the Princeton Theological Seminary, patterned after Nassau Hall, and designed by John McComb, Jr. Built in 1814.

Princeton Theological Seminary (PTSem), officially The Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church, is a private school of theology in Princeton, New Jersey. Founded in 1812 under the auspices of Archibald Alexander, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), it is the second-oldest seminary in the United States. It is also the largest of ten seminaries associated with the Presbyterian Church.

Princeton Seminary has long been influential in theological studies, with many leading biblical scholars, theologians, and clergy among its faculty and alumni. In addition, it operates one of the largest theological libraries in the world and maintains a number of special collections, including the Karl Barth Research Collection in the Center for Barth Studies. The seminary also manages an endowment of $1.13 billion, making it the third-wealthiest institution of higher learning in the state of New Jersey—after Princeton University and Rutgers University.

In the 1980s, Princeton Seminary enrolled about 900 students but today, the Seminary enrolls approximately 333 students. While around 26 percent of them are candidates for ministry specifically in the Presbyterian Church, the majority are completing such candidature in other denominations, pursuing careers in academia across a number of different disciplines, or receiving training for other, non-theological fields altogether.

Seminarians hold academic reciprocity with Princeton University as well as the Westminster Choir College of Rider University, New Brunswick Theological Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, and the School of Social Work at Rutgers University. The institution also has an ongoing relationship with the Center of Theological Inquiry.

Princeton was founded before the American Revolutionary War. It is the home of Princeton University, which bears its name and moved to the community in 1756 from its previous location in Newark. Although its association with the university is primarily what makes Princeton a college town, other important institutions in the area include the Institute for Advanced Study, Westminster Choir College, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton Theological Seminary, Opinion Research Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Siemens Corporate Research, SRI International, FMC Corporation, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Amrep, Church and Dwight, Berlitz International, and Dow Jones & Company.

Princeton is roughly equidistant from New York City and Philadelphia. It is close to many major highways that serve both cities (e.g., Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1), and receives major television and radio broadcasts from each. The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.
