A story of Sicily: the Sicilian Gandhi (but he was not Sicilian ...).

This photographic story is connected, at least in part, with the previous one, whose link is represented by the nephew of the painter Robert Kitson, Miss Daphne Phelps: in life she was a psychiatric social worker (she collaborated with Anna Freud, daughter by Sigmund Freud), on the death of his uncle in 1948 he moved to Sicily to take care of Casa Cuseni, having inherited it: initially he wanted to sell it and then return to England, instead he ended up falling in love with Taormina and Sicily, deciding to stay there for the rest of his life. Daphne ran Casa Cuseni welcoming paying guests, there are many illustrious names of artists, writers, well-known personalities who have stayed there: Danilo Dolci was one of these guests, and it is precisely about him that I wish to speak. He was born in 1924 in Sesana (Trieste), after a somewhat eventful life, in 1952 he moved to Trappeto (between Palermo and Trapani), a country among the poorest and most disadvantaged in Italy: that same year the first of numerous fasts, going to bed and fasting in the bed of a child who died of malnutrition, a protest that will end only when the authorities undertake to build a sewer. Danilo Dolci continues with numerous initiatives, from the publication of a book ("Banditi a Partinico", which makes public opinion aware of the poor living conditions of western Sicily, to this book and many others will follow), to the "strike at reverses ”, when the workers went on strike, hundreds of unemployed began to work to reactivate an abandoned municipal road, an initiative that was then stopped by the police; Dolci also initiates an activity of denunciation of the mafia phenomenon and its relations with politics. There are numerous certificates of esteem and solidarity that he receives from important personalities from Italy and abroad, but despite this, for others Danilo Dolci is a dangerous subversive, to be hindered, denigrated, locked up in prison. Yet Dolci does not pose as a guru, boss, or teacher, his working method is based on the conviction that change is based on the involvement and direct participation of those concerned, his idea of progress enhances local culture and skills; he tries, working closely with the people and the most disadvantaged and oppressed groups of western Sicily, to free the dormant creativity in every person, calling this research "maieutic", a term coming from philosophy, precisely from Socratic maieutics: it is "the 'art of the midwife ", every educational act is to bring to light all the inner potentialities of the one who wants to learn, like a mother who wants to give birth to her own child from her womb, so no to notions imparted a priori, yes to help the student to bring their knowledge to light, using dialogue as a tool; however, Socratic maieutics is unidirectional, while in Danilo Dolci's "reciprocal maieutics", knowledge comes out of experience and its sharing, therefore it presupposes the reciprocity of communication. During meetings with farmers and fishermen, the idea was born to build the dam on the Jato River, which is important for the economic development of the area, but also to remove a powerful weapon in the hands of the mafia, an instrument of power which controlled the few available water resources; however the request for "water for all" will be heavily hindered, popular mobilizations and long fasts will be necessary to finally see the project realized: now the dam exists, and others have been built, thus modifying the lives of thousands of people, with the development of numerous companies and cooperatives. Among the many activities of Dolci, thanks to the contribution of international experts, the experience of the Mirto Educational Center, attended by hundreds of children, should be mentioned. Returning to Daphne Phelps and Casa Cuseni, here is a lithograph by Tono Zancanaro, dedicated to the birth of one of Danilo Dolci's daughters, but, among the most important, there is a correspondence between the pacifist philosopher Bertrand Russel and Daphne Phelps, in which the English thinker invited Robert Kitson's niece to participate in the gatherings of progressive intellectuals and literary and scientific personalities of the time, among them, besides Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Carlo Levi, there was Danilo Dolci, sociologist, educator, still recognized today as one of the most important figures of nonviolence worldwide.

post Scriptum:

- the images with Danilo Dolci come from the Casa Cuseni archive: they are cuttings from original periodicals, often full pages, from English newspapers, carefully preserved by Miss Daphne Phelp; these images were also taken by photographing some pages of James McNeish's book, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- the photographs taken in various countries of Sicily, are prior to the covid-19 pandemic;

- thanks to the surgeon colleague dr. Franco Spadaro and his kind wife, Mrs. Mimma Cundari, owners of Casa Cuseni (declared in 1998, Italian National Monument), for their hospitality and availability, having made the Danilo Dolci archive available to me.

post scriptum:

- le immagini con Danilo Dolci provengono dall'archivio di Casa Cuseni: sono ritagli di giornali originali dell'epoca, spesso pagine intere, provenienti da quotidiani inglesi, accuratamente conservati dalla signorina Daphne Phelp; tali immagini sono state realizzate fotografando anche alcune pagine del libro di James McNeish, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- le fotografie realizzate in diversi paesi della Sicilia, sono antecedenti alla pandemia da covid-19;

I hadn’t done night photography in a while, so I took my Hasselblad out last winter when we went downtown to eat at the Trillium Cafe - one of our favorite spots on Hood River. Their Buffalo Wings are to die for. I guessed at the exposure, which was 30 seconds, or EV 4 at F16. with reciprocity correction.

Halnaker tree tunnel is quite local to me so I often go there to test film or cameras as I have plenty of old images I can use as references. This time I shot a few sheets of Fomapan 200 to get a handle on its reciprocity characteristics. For this test I rated the film at 125iso. Fomapan has a reciprocity factor of 3x from 1-10 secs, so my 2 second metered exposure translated to a 6 seconds, and even then I would have liked to close down another stop. Luckily it was very still. It's quite a challenging scene, shot in the early evening so the sky is bright but there are deep shadows on the left of frame. To counter the contrast I reduced development by 20%. Overall I quite like the film but it is not the easiest to handle. It has a bright blue anti halation dye that has to be pre-soaked out of the film before you start development. I forgot this step on a previous test and was rewarded with tiny white spots over the film. The upside is that the film is half the price of anything else on the market. So, if I can understand it properly it will give me another creative option, that has a different look from my usual Ilford options.

Brutus is an experimental car, created by mating a 1907 chassis to a V12 aero engine from the first World War with a total cylinder volume of 47 litres and a power of 405 kW.

It is exhibited in a rather dark room in the museum. shot this with the camera on a tripod at f/5.6 and an exposure time of several seconds. I just guessed the exposure time, what with reciprocity failure and all that, I balked at computing it. Apparently my guess wasn't far off.

Seattle at night, shot from West Seattle. The light on the water comes from the city lights reflecting off the clouds.

This week's assignment in my B&W1 class was to do only one print, focusing on "self expression", using all the darkroom techniques we've been learning over the weeks. The whole semester we were alowed to shoot with only one film, Kodak Tri-X 400, and never with exposures over 1 second since we're not supposed to know about reciprocity failure yet. So when I told my teacher I felt really limited with short exposures, she just gave me the go ahead to try long exposures and even suggested I try slower film (Efke 25). Freedom ! My local shop was out of Efke 25, so I just picked up some Ilford Pan-F Plus 50. I can't say enough how this scan doesn't do the print justice.

Its been quite a while since I've last shared any of my photographs. Have been very busy lately with loads of important and unimportant works.. :-D So, here is the silence broken and and it starts all over again. Flickr is indeed one funny place to be at. Reciprocity is a key to success here. Once the chain gets broken it is always harder mending. With over 3000 photographs being shared in a minute the hole seems dark enough.. :-)

Thanks everyone for viewing and as always your comments are largely appreciated!!

A second try of adding dramatics to an HDR photo. Not really convinced about uploading it.

(I've been out the last three days so I couldn't comment any of your latest photos, apologies and I'll try to do it next week. Reciprocity is a basic rule of social behaviour.)

"When You're Good To Mama"

by Fred Ebb & John Kander

(from "Chicago" soundtrack)

And now ladies and gentlemen

the Keeper of the keys,

the Countess of the clink,

the Mistress of Murderers Row,

Matron Mama Morton!

Ask any of the chickies in my pen

They'll tell you I'm the biggest Mutha... Hen

I love them all and all of them love me -

Because the system works;

the system called reciprocity!

Got a little motto

Always sees me through -

When you're good to Mama, Mama's good to you!

There's a lot of favors

I'm prepared to do

You do one for Mama, she'll do one for you!

They say that life is tit for tat

And that's the way I live -

So, I deserve a lot of tat

For what I've got to give!

Don't you know that this hand

washes that one too

When you're good to Mama, Mama's good to you!

If you want my gravy

Pepper my ragu

Spice it up for Mama, she'll get hot for you!

When they pass that basket

Folks contribute to -

You put in for Mama, she'll put out for you!

The folks a top the ladder

are the ones the world adores -

So boost me up my ladder kid

and I'll boost you up yours!

Let's all stroke together

Like the Princeton crew -

When you're strokin' Mama, Mama's strokin' you!

So what's the one conclusion

I can bring this number to?

When you're good to Mama, Mama's good to you!

I was rushing a bit with this, trying to get one more picture in the fading light of the day. Even though there was hardly any breeze, the long shutter speed required to correct for reciprocity failure still unfortunately led to some slightly motion-blurred foliage in the mid-ground. Oh well, there's always next time...

MicroWorld #16 The story continues.

At first they were small and looked like normal faint wispy clouds that grew and hovered over the three distant peaks. As the explorers got nearer they could see that the clouds were crystal shaped like the pyramidal mountains that shone below. These, the mountains beyond which their craft lay waiting, were particularly smooth and would be difficult to climb. They hoped that an ascent would not be required and that a safe route would present itself.

The clouds continued to grow at a substantial rate until they reached what must have been a critical mass. At this point they began to shimmer and, as far as our heroes could make out it began to snow a pale green snow. They presumed it was snow since at this distance they could only guess as to what was really happening. Meanwhile, behind them, all evidence of the village was now gone, covered in a lake of pink gas which was now creeping along the ground slowly behind them.

They pressed on as the turquoise cloud layer began to grow and flatten, spreading out in a thin layer over the surrounding region. A pale blue glow from the five suns filtered through the cloud layer casting an eerie light over the ground. As they approached the mountain they could see the edge of the bank of falling snow getting nearer. The snow formed a thin green twinkling layer on the cooler upper slopes of the steep mountains. Soon it began to fall around them.

The crystals were quite large, and star shaped, exhibiting dichroism in in the blue glow of the filtered sunlight. It was not single wave dichroism but multicolour. The snow flakes reflected a pale green that was most prominent colour when they lay on the ground but looking up at them as they fell they transmitted a variety of colours which made them twinkle and sparkle in a beautiful kaleidoscopic display. As they fell on to the warm ground, heated by the underlying thermal currents, they immediately began to sublime and without melting turned straight to a gas that hugged the rocky ground surface. The crystals which fell on their space-suits lay there glistening and slowly rotating for a few seconds before turning to a green/purple layer of gas that covered their arms and bodies before sliding down their legs to reach the ground to intermingle with the rest of the gas layer which was now building up. This vast layer of slowly swirling gas then moved downhill towards the advancing pink gas which covered the village.

As the two colourful gas layers intermixed in a mysterious immiscible dance, strange things began to happen.

To be continued.

I've been having a devil of a time getting good exposures with Washi S in my Reality So Subtle 6x6. I've had great luck with Washi S in 35mm format. Maybe it just needs more light (reciprocity factor?) than it gets with the pinhole. I dunno, the negatives were very thin if anything.

A change from my usual images; I've been experimenting with a new technique which generates 'beams' or bands of colours. They're still refraction patterns from a single beam of light passing through one of my 'plastic' creations (24x36mm in size) - colour has been introduced by using colour filters in the original beam.

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

For new viewers: these 'Refractographs' are analogue images of the refraction patterns of a single beam of light passing through various transparent objects (in this case a piece of textured glassware). The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used; the transparent object replaces the lens. Colour, in this case, has been added by positioning coloured filters within the optical beam. This is an analogue image and has not been computer generated. The colours you see are a faithful reproduction of those captured on film.

There is no movement of lights - a single static white light source is used. Also there is no camera movement involved - the image is captured in-camera with a single short exposure

- the images with Danilo Dolci come from the Casa Cuseni archive: they are cuttings from original periodicals, often full pages, from English newspapers, carefully preserved by Miss Daphne Phelp; these images were also taken by photographing some pages of James McNeish's book, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- the photographs taken in various countries of Sicily, are prior to the covid-19 pandemic;

- le immagini con Danilo Dolci provengono dall'archivio di Casa Cuseni: sono ritagli di giornali originali dell'epoca, spesso pagine intere, provenienti da quotidiani inglesi, accuratamente conservati dalla signorina Daphne Phelp; tali immagini sono state realizzate fotografando anche alcune pagine del libro di James McNeish, "Fire under the ashes - The life of Danilo Dolci";

- le fotografie realizzate in diversi paesi della Sicilia, sono antecedenti alla pandemia da covid-19;

Favorite... Most social networking based sites allow you to favorite or like a picture or video or text. Considering how many people around the world use this technology every day, it’s worthwhile to peel back the onion layers and look at Flickr favorites more closely.

Why do people favorite?

At the most Pavlovian level, a psychologist would say we push that little star because seeing it turn red makes me feel happy deep down inside. This seems silly perhaps, but in fact researchers have found that successful interaction with computers, like any more direct physical task, can bring about satisfaction and release of endorphins. Take a look at the star the next time you favorite a pic—do you notice how the star gets bigger and vibrates a bit? This is a feature added by the Flickr designers to make you want to do it again.

At a very functional level, people fave photos because it’s a way to collect them, either for personal enjoyment, or more evil uses like stealing them. I notice some people say on their Flickr page they will ban someone who is giving favorites with no comments, because of fear these people are stealing their photos. (I give a lot of fave only’s so I must be banned all over the place!)

Because Flickr is a social network, there are also social reasons why people favorite a picture. In their paper “Faving Reciprocity in Content Sharing Communities A comparative analysis of Flickr and Twitter,” Lee et al. used a Flickr dataset from 2006 to study faving behavior. First, they found three classes of Flickr users, roughly equal in size—those who only fave and receive none (lurkers), those who receive faves and give none (typically professional photographers), and those who both give and receive faves (typically amateur photographers).

Second, they found that about one-third of faves are reciprocated, i.e. if a person gives someone’s picture a fave, the person receiving it will fave one of the giver’s photos. Interestingly, they found (and I have observed similar) that the likelihood of reciprocity was higher between two people who were NOT contacts or friends. This indicates that faving reciprocity is in part social etiquette, like holding the door open for a stranger.

In their paper “How to Identify Successful Actors of the Flickr Community and How to Determine Their Attributes,” Egger et al. provide evidence that faves are also used by observers as an indicator of artistic weight. A picture or artist with many faves signals to observers, including potentially commercial ones, that the populace likes this art and so should they.

How does Flickr use favorites?

Flickr’s search engine is based on its calculation of a photo’s “interestingness”. The interestingness algorithm is proprietary and secret, but through studying the original Flickr patents and performing statistical analysis over the years, we’ve developed some insight into how faves work (see here and here for more). In summary, a fave is worth more to a photo than a comment or a view (of course you can’t fave without viewing). All else being equal, a picture with more faves is going to be more Flickr-interesting, and show up higher ranked in any search, especially under the “interesting” tab (less so in the “relevant” tab).

Which artist has received the most Flickr favorites?

I don’t have a definitive answer, but judging from the number of images that they have with over 1000 favorites, I would have to say Jim Patterson, Patrick Smith, and Philipp Klinger are candidates.

Which picture has the most faves?

Again I can’t say for sure, but here’s what I’ve found so far:

1. 5274—Untitled, by jam343 (which also has 1.7 million views)

2. 4390--Maelstrom, by Patrick Smith

3. 4199--Canton trade fair, by tarotasic

Who has given the most favorites?

I’ve given 128,062 faves. I know of three people who have more than that: i_love_you_get_away_from_me (611,477), Steve-h (260,212), and Billy Wilson (224,466).

Which our my photos have the most faves?

1. 949--Ansel Adams on color

2. 752--Each war is different, each war is the same

3. 388--Big wheel

4. 330--A change of scenery

5. 295--Reflections

Who have I faved the most?

There’s a nice program that can provide that information for you here. It can examine all your faves, or the last 20,000 (whichever is smaller). From my last 20,000 faves, which is about all of 2012, here’s who I’ve faved the most:

Another piece of glass that gives some nice refraction patterns. The colours have been made by placing various optical filters directly in the light beam.

For new viewers: these are analog images of the refraction patterns of a beam of light passing through various transparent objects. The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used ( this is a photogram using film instead of photographic paper). No Photoshop, only Picasa2 for alignment and cropping. The negative film was lab processed and a print scanned for uploading.

Taming Light #36

Over the centuries philosophers and scientists have sat under trees to contemplate the reasons for their existence or why apples fall; but cats too wonder why they are here. Under the Tree of Light a blue cat sits to ponder deep thoughts but is now getting somewhat distracted by the fluttering of the birds in the leaves above and by the two blue fish balancing on its head.

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a white light beam passing through shaped and textured transparent forms. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object(s) in its place. Colours are introduced by placing complex coloured optical filters directly in the light beam.

The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

View On Black

Ilford FP4+ at 100ASA. (I always use 100 for FP4+ as I can never see the point of messing about with 1/3 stops...)

My Pentax Spotmeter showed the highlights at maximum of EV10.5 with required shadow areas at EV6. I placed the mid tones for the submerged brickwork beside the winch mechanism at EV8. Exposure was adjusted to f32 @ 8 Sec to allow for the yellow filter and a wee bit of reciprocity.

Standard development time of 10 mins in Ilford DD-X.

Moonlit Seascape

Mendocino County, California

It was about t 2/3 moon. I did not make notes but I remember the exposure was about 2 minutes. I did use the mirror lock up to prevent vibration at the beginning of the exposure. I metered the shot with my Pentax Digital Spot Meter, multiplied the time by 1.5 (WAG) to compensate for reciprocity failure, and used a timer app in my iPhone to time it. The camera shutter was set to "B" and I used a Nikon locking shutter release cable so I did not need to stand there and hold it.

The surf was up so the white is the average image of the white water from the waves breaking on the rocks. The white spot in the upper left is a high spot on Saunders Reef that is surrounded by much deeper water.

This is one of my first shots with this fast (for MF) & sharp lens. I think I like it!

The bands of white light at the top and upper right are cars driving along Shoreline Highway (California 1, Pacific Coast Highway).

1825 John Egan harp, Dublin, Ireland.

In the Music Room at the Allport Museum in the State Library of Tasmania.

Camera: Leica IIIf Red Dial 35mm Rangefinder (1952).

Lens: Leitz 9cm Elmar f/4 (1956).

Film: Ilford Pan F Plus ISO 50 35mm black & white negative.

Development: ID-11 1 + 3 20C/18 minutes.

Due to: the low light levels in the Allport museum; the ISO 50 rating of Pan F Plus; my decision to stop the 9cm Elmar well down for sufficient depth of field; and, exposure compensation for loss of film reciprocity—this was a long exposure of approximately 7.5 minutes.

The harp made a prior appearance in one of my 70 millimetre black & white film images, here:
