In 1808 the area became part of the new Diocese of New York. In 1818, a colony of French and German Catholics was brought to Jefferson County by Jacques Leray, son of Count Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, who built for them, and also for an Irish settlement, several Catholic churches. At the same time Irish and French Canadian immigrants began to arrive and soon there arose several Catholic missions.[2] By 1833 there were congregations established in Ogdensburg, Carthage, and Plattsburg, although Carthage did not as yet have a church. Each of them served a number of mission stations, while Minerva, New York was served by Father J. Quinn, who travelled from Troy, New York, 100 miles away

This is an essentially French style brought to Canada during the mid to late 19th century from the Second Empire in France of Napoléon III. The First Empire collapsed in 1815, the monarchy was then restored, and the Second Empire was led by Napoléon III, nephew of Napoléon I, from 1852 to 1870. This style is lavish, grand and complex. It enjoyed a huge success in large public buildings for a short while, then for reasons that are difficult to grasp, it went out of fashion. Sadly, many of the public buildings were demolished.

The Dominion Building Brampton

8 Queen Street East, Brampton, Ontario

"The Dominion Building is a prominent landmark located at the Four Corners in downtown Brampton. The three storey building was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and built in 1888. The front facade is dressed in heavily textured Credit Valley sandstone that was quarried at the Forks of the Credit in Caledon Township. It is further distinguished by a mansard roof, lantern and clock tower. The clock tower was built in 1914. In 1939 a single storey extension was built off the rear of the building. The post office relocated to a larger facility in 1958 and the building was acquired by the Town of Brampton as the Police Station. In the early 1970s it was sold to private interests." -

Second Empire Architecture

For smaller buildings and residences the style is less elaborate, but is still ornate and very impressive. Windows are generally high with elegant surrounding moldings and there is always a Mansard roof punctuated with gabled or elliptical dormers. Roofs and balconies are generally embellished with iron cresting, and the roof itself is often dichromatic. 95

The former Trust and Guarantee Co. Ltd. has a unique and intricate facade compared with the surrounding buildings. The white terracotta exterior contrasts with the brick exterior of nearby structures. The building is harmonious in its scale and massing with the surrounding streetscape. It is a "one of a kind" in Brantford's Downtown, if not one of a kind anywhere.

The James L. Sutherland Residence is associated with the Sutherland family. James and his brother John took over a book binding business on Colborne Street in Brantford, around 1883, and renamed it, J and J Sutherland. The business continued to operate until the end of World War II with James actively involved until the early 1920's. At this time J.R. Sutherland took over the business. During this period John Sutherland was also one of the earliest librarians at the Brantford Public Library. The residence was fully occupied by the Sutherlands until 1948, with J.R. Sutherland residing in the building until 1982.

The James L. Sutherland Residence is a fine example of Queen Anne Revival architecture. It is a large home, set back from the street. The Dufferin Avenue facade is based on a rectangle of good proportions with a vertical thrust. There are four sections to the elaborate facade

The Greek Revival was an architectural movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in Northern Europe and the United States. A product of Hellenism, it may be looked upon as the last phase in the development of Neoclassical architecture. The term was first used by Charles Robert Cockerell in a lecture he gave as Professor of Architecture to the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1842 359
