The intention of this course series seeks to provide an insight into classical Aristotelian logic in order to strengthen critical reasoning/rhetoric skills amongst the activist community. This course allowed for individuals to better represent themselves and the struggles they support in interviews, and will better allow for participants to hold-their-own in media interviews and in conversation amongst detractors from causes actively supported by Peace House/Affiliates.

Each course will be structured into a two-hour block containing two parts: theory and application. The first hour will contain teachings from varying works of antiquity, from Aristotle's Logic to the Socratic dialogues and orations from Cicero & other distinguished rhetoricians. From here, theoretical knowledge will be applied in addressing/critiquing potent arguments through the history of philosophy, from Descartes Cogito Ergo Sum to Immanuel Kant's metaphysical theory. The second one-hour block will deal with the application of technique acquired in the aforementioned block. Through consensus, we will decide which topic those in attendance would like to address, and will allow for a demonstration of informal logic and constructive criticism relative to the presentation of said argument (Note: if it is felt that there should be scheduled topics by course attendees, methodology for topic selection is subject to change).

-Presentation One: Introduction to Logic/Rhetoric: Presentation One will address one-third of Aristotle's triangle-of-rhetoric: Logos

1) Layman's Logic vs. Logic as a Math/theoretical science (If everyone has opinions and they're all equally valid, why does debate exist?) -This section will cover the distinction between logic and Logic, as well as an introduction to the syllogistic form/ overview of the structure of argument. The distinction between Formal and Informal Logic will be made.

2) Logic in Practice; a reading of Plato's Euthyphro.

-A group reading of Euthyphro will demonstrate how to address an opponent's argument on an opponent's terms. This will further explain the structure of argument and how many disputes remain unresolved due to axiomatic non-concessions.

-Follow-Up to Presentation One; Debate using per-determined axioms

A falconet with it's tail fanned out. I'm not sure the reasoning behind it, but could well be stretching.

Reasoning Mind table at the Graduate Department, Career, Summer Programs Fair

Elliot: “No. Some people just can’t listen to reasoning. Some people just can’t see what is happening right in front of their face… until the truth hits them in it. Until they lose what they love the most. Vinnie was one of those people.”

********************************************************

Vinnie: “Come on! Nothing bad is gonna come out of it as long as you don’t take an overdose. (seductively) Come back to bed…”

Elliot: “Jesus, you’re just not listening to me! (picks up a bra off the floor and hangs it above Vinnie’s head) Yours, I believe. Get dressed and give me back my shirt.”

Vinnie (purring, tries to get a hold of him): “Gladly, but you’re gonna have to come and get it, loveeeer!”

Elliot (frustrated): “Just… Just grow up, will you?! I’ve got a million things to do. Can you just put on some of your own clothes, finally?”

Vinnie: “I’d much rather wear you!”

Elliot: “You’ve got a one-track mind, lady. That’s always been a problem. (drops the bra on her face) Ooops!”

Vinnie (suddenly annoyed): “You son of a b*tch! Is it just Ben who’s put these ridiculous thoughts into your head, or your mother as well?”

Elliot: “What? I haven’t seen Mama or Indy for months – and you know that. They might as well have disowned me. Ben’s the only second person I’ve talked to in ages after you and the record company people. He’s got a lot of good poin…”

Vinnie (interrupting): “So he’s trying to brainwash you into leaving me? Well, he never liked me too much. You’d be better off without him!”

Elliot: “No! He’s been trying to talk some sense into my head. And I believe him. He’s my friend. My only friend.”

Vinnie: “Oh, is that right? ‘Cause he hasn’t slept with me, is that what you’re saying?”

Elliot: “Well…”

Vinnie: “Are you saying I have alienated you from your family and friends? Is that what you’re saying?”

Elliot: “Vinnie, don’t. You know I love you… But you’ve gotta admit that we’ve basically been living indoors for the last few months. That ain’t healthy.”

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions” ~Rainer Maria Rilke~

With some issues I have no patience...like with my ex and this whole ordeal that I am going through with him. I keep looking for answers...and want things solved right now. I don't want to wait and that gets me all frustrated. I have been fed up with it all and find myself being very bitter...that is not good. The whole answer to this situation is "not now". Don't worry about it right now. Just continue being the type of person you are, taking care of your responsibilities as you always have... so patience and faith. The answers will come in due time.

The allegorical poem Anticlaudianus (c. 1280) of Alanus de Insulis or Alain de Lille is a testimony to the scholastic program that placed the liberal arts in the service of the study of theology. In the Anticlaudianus, the liberal arts build a cart for Prudentia and take her to God. Reason acts as the charioteer of the team. Only during the last part of the journey to God, Theology takes over from the liberal arts.

Alain de Lille (or Alanus ab Insulis) (c. 1116/1117–1202/1203), French theologian and poet, was born in Lille, some years before 1128. An exact birth date has been hard to determine, but due to a monk's recent discovery of his' grave, it seems that 1116 or 1117 could be closer estimates. His exact date of death remains unclear as well, with most research pointing toward it being between April 14, 1202, and April 5, 1203. (Wikipedia)

The Anticlaudianus and the "Proper" Language of Theology- Eileen C. Sweeney (Marquette University)

In Book V of the Anticlaudianus Prudence accompanied by Reason arrives at the summit of the world. Prudence has undertaken the journey from earth to heaven at the behest of Nature; what they seek is a soul from God for the new and perfectly good man they are fashioning. Alan spends Book V portraying the transition from earth to heaven. This section of the poem emphasizes the discontinuity between the two realms. The laws of nature are contradicted everywhere Prudence looks, and Prudence herself loses her ability to function properly; most important, and a mirror of these changes in the natural order, the language of the poem discards the rules of ordinary discourse.

What I would like to trace in this paper is the relationship of theology to the liberal arts and of proper to improper language portrayed by the poem at the juncture between heaven and earth. An examination of the events and language of the Anticlaudianus reveals that though, according to the poem, there is a definite place where the rules of language and the laws of nature no longer function, they cease to function in a way that it is possible to explicate. Language ceases to function "normally" because it is transcended and becomes a "higher" kind of language, and the laws of nature no longer function because Prudence finds herself in the presence of the source of those laws.

The portrayal of theological language in the Anticlaudianus is clearly indebted to Pseudo-Dionysius; it makes use of the Dionysian/neo-Platonic notion that God is the source of all the perfections attributed to creatures, and, like Dionysius, emphasizes the deficiency that marks all divine predication. However, Alan's presentation of these Dionysian themes in the Anticlaudianus is different from their most well known use by Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas can be read as minimizing the mystical and suprarational elements of the Dionysian view because of his emphasis on degrees of propriety of divine predication in his doctrine of analogy. In contrast, Alan's poem almost rejects the possibility of constructing any analogy between language as it applies to God and creatures, emphasizing the impropriety that marks all theological language when viewed from the perspective of the arts. Moreover, Aquinas's account of Pseudo-Dionysius' three levels of divine predication stresses the resolution of the tension between affirmative predication (e.g., "God is good") and negative predication (e.g., "God is not good as we are good") in a third moment-Predication by "supra-eminence" (e.g., "God is good without limit"). Alan's poem, however, refuses to resolve the tension and predicates contradictions of God, but it does not, I would argue, predicate non-sensical contradictions. In language Alan might find congenial, his is a theology of negative affirmation and affirmative negation.

My sister and I went to see Godsmack this evening. I was hoping to get my 365 photo while there, but...well...they didn't allow cameras in the Municipal Auditorium. *tear* (I don't understand the reasoning for that at all, but anyway...)

We had a kickass time. A local band from the Charleston area, Voices of Anatole, opened for Godsmack. That was cool as hell within itself. They were a great choice as an opener, too- they fk'n rock!

Godsmack put on a killer show- non-stop, kickass music from beginning to end. My favorite part of the whole night was when Sully and Shannon (the regular drummer) had a sort of duel of the drums. Well, it wasn't really a duel, but more of a "let's show 'em what we can do" thing, minus the cockiness. It was amazing!! That gave me a bigger rush than anything else all night, I believe.

Then, of course, they did an audience sing-along or two- one of which was War Pigs (Black Sabbath). Of course, they had the audience participate on several of their own songs, as well. I got to hear my two favorite Godsmack tunes (which is always a good thing)- Awake and Serenity. The acoustic part in Serenity sent chills all over me. (I screamed and sang so much tonight that my mouth was dry and my throat was scratchy....but I'm not complaining. LOL)

After the show, we waited outside to get the drummer and bassist's autographs on our tickets. (Sully and the lead guitarist weren't "doing" the autographs, for whatever reason.) While there, we saw a very surreal fist fight (which was also a bit scary for a few seconds), and we met some cool people in the process. Seems like the fight gave the rest of us a perfect conversation starter. LOL

Anywho (before I go into even more detail and turn this into an even BIGGER novel)....

This photo was one that I took right before we headed out to go to Charleston (where the concert was being held). Since I didn't get any photos at the concert, I guess it'll have to do. LOL
