Most of my friends know by now not to mention Disney to me by now. I know it isn't reasonable why I dislike them, but I really am insulted how they water down the fairy tales I heard in my youth. But I also admit, some of their songs are hard to get out of your head once you hear them. Especially this one. I was finally able to put that song out of my mind, when my favorite singer made a cover version of it, more rocky, more grit.. and much more alive than the original (yeah yeah, screw you critics, I don't care). So.. here it is..
Snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free
Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I stay
Let the storm rage on
My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past
Let it go
Cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
Closer up versions of the special village at Monte Lussari. One would expect staying at a mountaintop location during ski season to be extremely expensive, but that is not the case here, I paid 50 Euros B&B, and had a generously portioned dinner at a reasonable price. Even the breakfast was nice, which is usually disappointing in Italy.

From the initial concept of a Veterans cemetery program, one operational philosophy has remained constant; to honor our Veterans for their service and sacrifice. With that goal in mind, the Missouri Veterans Commission has created a network of Veterans cemeteries so that every Missouri Veteran will have reasonable access to a Veterans cemetery. Five cemeteries are in operation at this time; Springfield, Higginsville, Bloomfield, Ft. Leonard Wood, and Jacksonville.
‘Tulips’. A reasonable morning but saw these tulips in our hall being bathed in glorious sunshine - not to be missed I thought. By the time we’d done lunch & gone out it was back to flat grey once again!!
366 - I’ve decided to do this to force me to pick up a camera other than when we are away on our travels (they will be posted as normal) - I will be interested to see what transpires, they will be varied I’m sure so we’ll see where inspiration takes me over the course of the year, hopefully at the end of it I will be a better photographer. Feel free to critique as you see fit, but please don’t feel obliged, I anticipate they will not be to all tastes. Have a great year and if you also have embarked on a 365 project then good luck in seeing it through, Alan:-)

Despite reasonable weather for the most part, this was the only sunset during our family holiday in Cornwall.
Moving about to find a reasonable shot was slow and wary. Each step was on uneven ground and slippery from wet fallen leaves. However, the light warranted attention considering it was low, angled, and softer from a layer of thin clouds.
This opportunity seemed to have its merits. The trees lined up around the ravine, that was gushing with water. The light was electrifying the green moss. And, it was as serene as a composition by Chopin. Alone in such a place is such a dichotomy. The quiet and peace is rewarding, but the dangers below require patience and exacting steps.
When I saw this 1940 GMC truck, I had to have a closer look. It was in pretty reasonable shape for an 84-year-old-vehicle. As I walked around it, I admired the layers of paint and the rusty chrome. The different colours indicated to me that every time it sold the colour was changed. Behind the cab was a flat deck and in the cracks were a few grains of wheat. It wasn't hard to imagine a young farm lad at the wheel hauling grain to a silo nearby.
There's still a reasonable amount of semaphore action to be found west of Llanelli and here, at Pembrey and Burry Port, I was lucky enough to be around when two local services approached the signal box and level crossing with all signals 'off'.

The Victoria Dock is ideally situated within reasonable distance for any of the main visitor attractions of North Wales such as Snowdonia National Park, Snowdon Mountain Railway, Welsh Highland Railway, Caernarfon Castle, and Electric Mountain Hydro Scheme, along with many other places of interest.
If you are travelling up or down the West Coast of Wales then you cannot miss out the Royal Town of Caernarfon and the Menai Strait as a destination to visit either by Sea or Land.
The Victoria Dock, situated in the historical Castle town of Caernarfon at the Southern end of the Menai Strait, was first built in the 1860s and intended for the import mostly of timber from Scandinavia. At around the time of completion the railway had arrived and following a period of decline in commercial shipping the Victoria Dock ceased to exist commercially.
In 1997 the Victoria Dock was purchased by Gwynedd Council who developed it into the Victoria Dock Marina that is operational today.
The Menai Strait is the stretch of water that separates the Island of Anglesey from the coast of Gwynedd and is as dramatic and picturesque as any other navigable waterway and anyone who has travelled through the Menai Strait will assure you that it is an easy passage to make if you have your correct timings. Passage information is willingly given by the duty Dock Master should you require.
Which seems like a reasonable place to keep it.
Looking down on Gerbode Valley in the Marin Headlands on Friday evening about supper time.
The clouds you see here, aren't clouds formed in a regular way, but what we refer to locally as the marine layer. The fog gets trapped between the higher density cold air above, and the warmer lower density surface air. These clouds are more like fog and never produce any rain. This layer is typically more pronounced over water but also rolls onshore as it has here, as the trapped fog is blown onshore by Westerly winds replacing the lower density hot air rising from the land.

Upon learning that a trio of GP9s had been paired for one of the Hamilton sets, there was only one reasonable and logical thing to do. Wake up at 3am and drive to Hamilton for sunrise of course. When I arrived in Hammer town I was greeted by a group of friends who had driven overnight from even further away than I, who stayed the night at a rest stop. In these days, the 0700 worked the industrial sector of Hamilton called "the hole", and the 0800 just switched the yard on the weekend. When the 0700 job crew walked over to the less desirable GP38 duo (crazy to think that's undesirable) there was a unanimous "groan" from the crowd. The trio was not a guarantee, and it was a gamble that we all chose that looked like it wasn't going to pay off. We chased the duo into the hole to Bunge where they started switching food grade tank cars. While watching them switch we all came to the conclusion that to salvage the day, we would shoot mainline trains with the searchlights on the Dundas Sub. We were about to leave when we heard "0800 job CN 4116 looking to enter the hole". We all looked at each other with smiles and "hell yeahs". A few minutes later the 0800 crew passed the 0700 crew next to Bunge, and the morning chase of a somewhat rare 0800 hole morning commenced. Photographing two CN jobs in the hole at the same time is also a fairly rare occurrence. Moral of the story, stick it out. The line "so you're telling me there's a chance" from Dumb and Dumber is sometimes truthful. Later that afternoon we still ended up on the Dundas and got a nice SD75I leader on 271 at Paris. www.flickr.com/photos/130272127@N07/53344865097/in/photol...

So we headed to the coast again, still sticking to the reasonable distance rule but this time not to exercise per se but for a bit of 'chicken soup' where I sat and took in the sunshine and sea air. Another shot in comments because as I went to get up from where I was sat the rotter aka better half turned my camera in my direction and took a shot of me ...
Conditions were disappointedly turbulent despite high pressure. However, I managed to get some reasonable filter runs of Mars late in my imaging session. Very happy that I managed to get something!
Now over three weeks past opposition the apparent size of Mars continues to shrink - the planet now being under 20". A definite gibbous phase is also evident.

The iconic "V" Syrtis Major Planum is crossing the Martian globe close to the meridian while Hesperia and the Mare Cimmerium are close to the preceding limb (left).
I also managed to pick up Huygens crater - top right of Syrtis Major - a first for me!
The north polar hood cloud is very obvious with some cloud visible towards both limbs. The South Polar Cap has reduced considerably and appears divided in two.
Thanks for looking!
With the evening weather looking reasonable, 925 looked like it might be worth a short chase south.
As there were quite a few clouds hanging around the sun, I decided to go with the easy pics... and striking some good luck, kept on going, ending up with six locations, all sunny (many clearing literally at the last second).
The revised timetable with this train running a little earlier means the light isn't as good further north at this time of year, but you can chase it further south. A shame there is no 926 to follow back, as it leaves Dunedin several hours later now.

A beautiful day. A reasonable objective for this hike. Bottled water, a sandwich and protein bars. Time wasn’t a factor but comfortable footwear is a must. The trail like you might imagine isn’t always a smooth stroll in the park. You’re bound to see numerous lookouts along the trail to sit and enjoy the views and assorted little critters and the occasional deer sighting. Enjoying time away from your job and daily chores in finding a good balance in your life. Days like this can offer up the opportunity to take some time for yourself and have yourself “A Walk to Remember.” Thanks for viewing my work.
I always liked the combination of exercise, the wild areas and photography. Add in the ability to capture the night sky and it just became reasonable to purchase stock in coffee and concealer for those dark under eye rings. It's addictive enough to stand out in a dark wilderness field waiting for shutters to close, with nothing to distract me from assuming that every little noise is a bear coming to steal my cliff bar.
I'm making progress on getting rid of the noise, but it's still smoother in the large version - Click L

After all the summer rain, I thought there would be a reasonable chance of some water flowing over these falls in Cote Gill. They are not shown on any Ordnance Survey Maps and spend most of the year dry, as the surface water flows beneath the limestone bedrock emerging below this face into the bed of Cote Gill as it flows down from the moors to join the River Skirfare in Littondale, near Arncliffe Cote.
Anyway, as I made my way up the track from Arncliffe Cote, I could see that there was a good flow of water in the beck. As I neared High Cote Moor I could hear that there was water cascading over this falls. So I made my way over from the bridleway to the gorge and dropped down to take this shot. It is a beautifully concealed falls and I was glad I made my speculative trip up here. I had been here before during a rainy winter, but the flow was probably better here this time, after the monsoon of a summer we have had this year.

When at sea and within a reasonable range of land we noticed a great number of Imperial Cormorants pass the boat. They virtually all flew by diagonally at speed and distance. This one which we came across very close to Cape Horn gave me a limited of a chance as it flew the same direction as our boat and reasonably close by. If only I had seen it coming I could have taken a front three quarter shot rather than a rear one. Isn’t it strange how a bird that basically looks black from most angles can have such a colourful plumage.

First of a reasonable batch of interesting vehicles seen at and on the way to/from a toy and train fair - I suspected there would be a few things in the car park and made sure my camera was charged-up, and I wasn't disappointed.

My first reasonable shot of a Bullfinch. ( I usually just get a photo of their backsides as they fly off) this one was too busy gobbling the flower heads of the blossom (-:
For once, I was up at a reasonable hour before work and thanks to a timely text, I was able to head trackside to the former GTW. The rarest of rare leaders on the CN roster is a escaped C40-8 from the Missabe pool (CN 2007) leading the one and only daily southbound CN manifest on the CSX Elsdon Sub, train L5039129 from the Belt Railway of Chicago’s Clearing Yard to Canadian National’s Kirk Yard. The C40-8 are all gone from the Missabe and handful have made it down to Chicago region and beyond on random assignments, all of which that aren’t stored or scrapped.
The train is originally A446 from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin and down to the BRC where it then terminates and also works, then becomes L503 for its run to Kirk. Lucky enough this day, there was cross traffic and CSX MOW all over Blue Island JCT so it gave us plenty of time to set up. After getting the light and the otherwise “okay” from the CSX EIC, the 2007 smokes it up across the Cal Sag Channel and hammers the Indiana Harbor Belt West Line diamonds at Blue Island JCT while getting back up to track speed. Taken: 10-29-24
This train is incredibly easy to miss, as the runtime from Clearing to Blue Island is just under 30-40 minutes with a potential stop at Ashburn about 7 miles north of here at the Metra Southwest Service diamonds, as well as “usually” having a clear shot over the diamonds. All CSX owned, CN sold the Elsdon Sub in 2013 while still having trackage rights out of the BRC via Hayford and out towards Munster, IN where the CSX splits off to the Monon and CN continues east towards Griffith, IN.
This is a follow up image to a similar posting of a Loch Leven sunset a few weeks ago. I was trying to create some very simply composed images with difficult light scenarios to test my new Canon 16-35 f4 L.
The Canon is much sharper than the Sigma which is great for catching detail but it is less forgiving of movement and diffraction and whilst the Canon is not terrible for flaring I am comparing it to one of the best lenses out there for resisting internal reflections and so it just doesn’t match up. I had to work very hard to reduce the flare in the foreground of this image to make it reasonable and even now I’m not that happy.
The aim of this shot is to get full strength sunlight into the centre of the lens (I know it is off-centre but that was artistic license) with a strong reflection from the water. My previous test was a low light trial whereas this is a too much light trial. I must admit I like the play of the light on the water and way it slightly curves around the foreground rock just helps to break the shape a little. The rock is a little soft at the edges but I think that was me (or possibly the water) causing movement and affecting the exposure.
I’ve now reached the consensus that the comparison between my new lens and my old Sigma is just not really like for like. They have very different strengths and weaknesses and I suppose what I should focus on is getting the best out of the one currently fitted to my camera. That and start saving up for the Canon 11-24 L. :-)
The eastbound Lathrop 'Z' train, ZLTG2 is battling the 2.43% eastward grade of Donner Pass at Gold Run, California. This train is one of the few that UP deems necessary to receive a somewhat reasonable amount of locomotives for the task. Despite its long length, the train's seven locomotives, arranged in a 3x3x1 configuration have the train maintaining a steady 15-20 mph.
Around the corner off the left side of the frame was a glaring example of what can happen when 'just enough' power is scheduled for a heavy train on the hill. The previous evening's MFRSP, an 8,500ft manifest train, had stalled between Gold Run and Alta around 11pm on track 1. The lead unit, UP 6851 had a momentary issue with it's DPU controller, leading the train to stall. Despite having six locomotives, in a 3x3x0 configuration, the train couldn't get restarted on the wet rails. The head end was of course in an inaccessible location by road, so the crew ran out their remaining hours of service in the cab, while their train went nowhere. The train was fouling the grade crossings at Lincoln Road, and Sacramento Street, making travel between the two communities much more difficult.
Eventually around 7am, the DS reached out to a foreman going on duty in Colfax, that he needed to steal the lead unit from his work train, to use with a rescue crew to go relieve the stranded MFRSP. That DS must not have fully briefed the daytime DS of the gravitas of the situation, as the rescue crew had to wait for both the EB and WB Amtrak, and a WB Z train before they could run up track 2 to the crossover at Midas, to line themselves back onto track 1, to reverse to the stricken train. The new leader got the train up to the Main St grade crossing at Alta around 3pm, where after 20 hours in the cab, the original crew was put in a Hallcon van. I sure hope UP didn't send them to their away from home terminal.
The rescue crew in turn only made it as far as Emigrant Gap before they too ran out of hours. When I finally saw them pull up to the crossing there at 20:05 they got to commiserate with the crew of the MSPRV who had been waiting in the center siding there since mid day for the line to clear up, and were waiting for their recrew also.
As a casual observer I can't comment on the economics of modern 'Precision Scheduled Railroading', but from the display I witnessed this day of autumn in 2023, I would question Union Pacific's frugal strategy of scheduling horsepower per ton.
Finally, after years of trying I've managed some reasonable shots of a kingfisher. I posted a shot a couple of weeks back from the Burton Marsh Covert hide where what was presumably this bird or its mate sat fixed at around 20m range before flying off and vanishing. Yesterday, it put on a real show for that hide commuting between half a dozen perches, some less than 5m from the hide, and catching a couple of sticklebacks.
I'm not totally sure of the gender. In this shot there is clearly orange on the bill saying female, but in the shade the orange is less obvious. On balance, I'd say female.
For this shot she was posing on a projecting reed illuminated by the afternoon winter sun. The background is the out-of-focus sunlit reedbed. Now I need an equally co-operative green woodpecker.
