Writers & Readers: gatherings for everybody who loves language and ideas.
Wordly was an investigation of the structural and sometimes obsessive relationship writers have to language. Ammon Shea talked about reading the entire OED (all 22,000 pages of it!); Michael Erard read from Um... and from his new work on language superlearners.
Although the city won't start charging "congestion pricing" until June, the toll readers are mostly already installed. Congestion pricing is why I might not be making as many--or maybe any--night drives into Manhattan to shoot window displays after that. Despite it being called "congestion" pricing, the city will charge drivers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so my 11:30 pm through 4:30 am trips won't be exempt.
I'm not taking the subway that late at night. People can get slashed or stabbed on the subway during the day, but at night I don't even want to think about it. Plus, the trains often run irregularly that late.
