There was clipping on the yellow flower in this image. I was able to correct it in PS by lowering the tone curve in the area of highlights -94 and lights -78. I used curves to adjust the green leaves on the G output 155.

I adjusted the white balance in this photo by using the white eyedropper tool in Photoshop. I selected a small rock as my white sample.

What masking techniques can I use besides background desaturation here?

I made two versions of the same photo. One was black and white and the other color. I exposed only the color layer with the wall containing the restaurant sign to give a more hand-colored "old fashioned" or less contemporary view of the scene.

I determined the correct white balance by observing how much detail was revealed in the dog's coat as I adjusted the levels setting.
