the wood that this piece is from an earlier piece i made. it was a much larger piece.

i took apart the original piece , broke it into several components and put it back again.

i sometimes do this when i feel a piece either needs to be re-worked or else given "a new face" (so to speak).

pastel 5: paradise found

water soluble pastes on cardboard framed on wood

SOLD

i am planning on showing my (water soluble) pastels (on cardboard framed on wood) at my upcoming "artomatic" art show, 29 may-5 july.

i am showing 2 of my africa series and am busy busy busy doing new work for the show. i have completed 4 new pastels which can be seen in my photostream or in my set "my art".

i was working on pastel 5 on friday. it was only 1/2 finished. a friend came over, saw it and wanted it!

of course now instead of having to make (i want to have 12 all total to hang at the show) only 5 more new works i now have to make 6! ah well...the price of being a "wanted" artist! not so hard to bear!

april 2008-here's some fun news: i just sold two of my (new medium for me) pastels..."pastel 2: why are they crying?" and "pastel 10".

i also sold "pastel 5: paradise" found a few weeks ago.

i made all these new pastels for my upcoming "artomatic" art show, 29 may-5 july.

i am mega psyched. three pastels sold before the show even opens. luckily i've continued to work so i have others i can hang and still have the 12 i wanted to hang...just not the "original" 12!

EXPLANATION OF ART PIECE:

this new art piece is a totally different "style" for me (sort of). for those of you familiar with my art you know that i have worked in mixed media/collage previously.

but normally i do not work "non representationally" (if that is the correct word?). there are usually "figures" "people""creatures" in my art.

however, for this piece, they did not seem to belong.

i must confess that it was quite hard for me to NOT put a figure/face/hand/etc. in the art piece. i resisted mightily...and am pleased i did. they would not compliment the piece i don't think.

still, this is a new style for me...and although i like it and am quite satisfied...it turned out exactly as i envisioned it in my mind's eye before i began...i am still not use to not seeing my "usual cast of characters".

EXPLANATION OF THE PIECE:

this past summer i was traveling down a back road in utah and saw a old baby doll sitting on the front porch of an antique store. i was drawn to her.

since i have so many old baby dolls sitting in my art studio, and little room for another, i decided to take a photograph of her so i could remember her.

she looked so lonely to me (hence the title). perhaps lonely for her "long ago" little girl owner?

when i came home i knew i wanted to make an art piece to remember her.

i "worked on" the colors of the photograph to suit the painted wood.

and here she is.....lonely.

but now they have a friend.

water soluble pastels on cardboard framed on wood

normally i paint, collage, mixed media on/in wood. my art is usually quite "dark and often "bloody".

i have recently been experimenting with pastels.

therefore i decide to "try" my hand at pastel using my usual cast of characters that one normally sees in my art.

i am quite surprised with how the piece has turned out. although the "people" that are represented in this piece are ones i've used before they have never been used in quite this way..by that i mean......so "cheerful"!!! ( as i view the piece). normally my art is rather dark, has lots of grim figures, "blood", etc. but this piece practically sparkles with pinks, light blue, turquoise, bright oranges, yellows. and, i think, that changes the nature of the piece.

what do i think of this art piece? hmmmm......i think i rather like it.....

considering that it started out only as an "experiment" and not intended to be a "serious" piece, i suppose i have achieved my goal. i now know i can use pastel with my usual people/figures/hands/etc. but....i also know that pastel and "blood" do not mix..at least not for me, not at this moment. maybe as i try again "there will be blood" !

april 2008-here's some fun news: i just sold two of my (new medium for me) pastels..."pastel 2: why are they crying?" and "pastel 10".
