It was a splendid day, low humidity, a cool breeze and clear skies. A very rare day in Louisiana. I had to get out and shoot. As we were approaching the Golden Hour, I found myself cutting through an alleyway when a man at the opposite end grabbed my attention.
Oshay was wearing an apron and dragging a garbage can down the alley. I asked if I could get his portrait for 100 Strangers and I explained the project. I really wanted a few images similar to the work of one of my friends, Gary Csuk. Gary, known on flickr as f u oscar does some of the most striking environmental street photography that is sensitive, classically composed and all around outstanding.
I did a quick look around and asked Oshay to stand in front of the wall where graffiti had been painted over, forming a cloud. I saw the electrical connections and the chain link fence as being metaphorical to my subject.
Oshay told me he is a dishwasher at a nearby restaurant. He was not hesitant about telling me this. He told me with the confidence of a man who knows that all work is honorable, and of a man who is making his own way in the world. Oshay and I swapped Instagram contacts, and I later found on his Instagram page "A Yahweh Fearing Man, Oakland Born, Louisiana Raised, Singer, Rap Artist."
I shot Oshay at ƒ/8 on aperture priority, with the camera bracketed one f-stop to allow more light to compensate for his dark skin. That yielded a shutter speed of 1/30. In retrospect, I would have liked a bit more sharpness, (I'm sharp obsessive). As the light began to fade, I could have easily shot this image at ƒ/5.8 or ƒ/4. I would have had a faster shutter with no DoF loss. Live and learn. That's what 100 Strangers is all about for me. Learning to make the mechanics of photography instinctual so you can focus on engaging your subject. I need to get back into the mix.
Thank you Oshay for being the 197th stranger in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the flickr group page.

I decided to flock (with his own hair) and repaint (1st time) my Glitter N' Gold Rio Pacheco. After a break-up with Jem He's ready to show off his talent.
I met Rock a couple of months ago via the group I play football with on Sunday afternoons. All this time our conversations focused on football and how to best our opponents on the given day. Last week, however, our conversation wandered onto what we do outside of football. As it turns out, Rock is a rap artist who's trying to break into the music business. As such, he decided to hire me to create a few promotional images for his marketing needs. This was one of my favorites from the session.
strobist: 2 White Lightning Ultrazap 1600s, left and right (slightly behind subject), diffused by gridded strip boxes. 1 Canon 580EX, camera right, diffused by a gridded 24" collapsible softbox. 1 Canon 580EX, behind subject, shot through a Light Blaster with a custom-made slide. An overhead tungsten light provided a little bit of warm-colored light on the subject's head. Monolights and flash triggered via Cybersyncs.

About the image: One of the songs Rock is going to release soon deals with the loss of his friends and family members to gun violence. As such, I thought that the inherent eeriness of an IR image might work well for him. What surprised me, though, was how his tattoos stood out in IR light (the same tattoos do not show up as prominently in visible light).

From a photoshoot I did for him.
I use the term "photoshoot" loosely here. . . He paid me $25.00 for 1/2 hour of taking pictures of him with no studio equipment. That was nice, since I don't OWN any studio equipment, and prefer natural light, anyway.

This consumed a good part of my Saturday. Part of my post-production work for a CD-album cover and poster. This is my first try a a small "commission" like this.
Now you may understand why I'm failing horribly in my visiting the photos of my friends. . sorry. . .
The bricks on the left side were done by making a partial "mask" and then turning it into a negative, and layering it back.
There ARE flaws in it, but since it will end up as a 4 inch x 4 inch CD cover, they should be OK at that size.

This is an image of the rap star Trina shot inside her limo just before she left to go on stage. Trina's makeup artist worked with me for several years so the opportunity was destined. Trina is cool as ever. There was a mirror on the ceiling, hence the double image.
Not my usual post, instead sharing an image I took with my phone. Unfortunately, cameras were not permitted.
Grabbed this shot during the NY State of Mind Tour @ the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, September 27th. I had the time of my life being entertained by some of my rap heroes from the 90's The Wu-Tang Clan, Nas & De La Soul. Seeing the Wu perform live for first time was like seeing the X-Men & the Avengers on stage!😄👐
From a recent shoot working on the short film "Quickly Going Nowhere" featuring the mutli-talented Brotherman (Thomas Boord-James) and directed by Johnny Griffith.

(VIP Shoot via MC) Atlanta Rap Artist ~ By A Cool Bean
Seen Jon Tarifa once before, on a big festival, from a distance...so actually didn't see the band at all really....as I bumped into him a lot while attending another mutual band we like, I had a look at the videoclips on Youtube..it was still as from a distance..alright-ish..
so when I saw that he was going to perform at Zeeheldenfestival, I decided to go as i wanted to have a proper look and listen...see for yourself I always say and live is always more pure...I think...
no regrets there..what an energy and what a happy atmosphere on stage...he found himself surrounded by several international musicians and whow that bass player...Leah masters her bass really well! great sound...
to be short: no regrets...next!!

Oakley artwork featuring rap artist Lil' Jon. It was fun drawing all the details in his studio.
Artwork created in Illustrator from photo references. Art direction from Paul Schulte of Oakley.

Promo shoot for rap artist Lord Lav.
These images were shot to mark the launch of Lav's website.
He is currently working on his first studio album "Lord of the Dead" which documents his new found place in high society as a zombie plague spreads across the globe.
