"Amazing Rays" Generally I teach my students to find the composition first, then wait for light to be perfect and nail it. But sometimes light dictates composition as in this scene. High up in the Olympic Mountains I had a perfect composition set up in another direction, then these amazing rays happened and it was time to change it up an nail it and put it in the bank!!! We have a big event coming up in my Cannon Beach Gallery, Images of the West. This weekend is the amazing Earth an Ocean event, mixing art, music and the environment in Cannon Beach. This is a big celebration to bring awareness of the environment on the beautiful planet we call home. I hope you will come on down to Cannon Beach and celebrate with us! 224 North Helock Suite #1 Cannon Beach, OR 97110. Check out this link. cbgallerygroup.com/earth-and-ocean-festival-september-20-...

Fresh Snow and Wallace Falls in Wallace Falls State Park in Washington...
"Winter Wallace" I have been trying to get a shot of Wallace Falls after a heavy snow for many years. I have a sweet one from back in my slide film days, but wanted to get a fresh one on the 50 MP Image Monster. Timing has just never lined up correctly, but this last Monday it did. I really enjoyed being able to snow shoe the trails, and had a blast catching images along the way. I will be back to Wallace Falls State Park again this Monday to teach, and I look forward to seeing how the snow melt is coming along, and to teach a new group of students. If you are interesting in joining this class, or the one I have coming up on March 25th at the same location, just shoot me an email to randall@randalljhodges.com. This is an outstanding beginning class for anyone who wants to shoot like a pro right in the camera, without the need for Photoshop or post processing. Thank you so much for looking!

Winter Scene and the Wallace River in Wallace Falls State Park in Washington
"Winter Wonderland" Got out for an excellent snowshoe on Monday. What a treat it was to be the only one on the trail all day in Wallace Falls State Park with well over a foot of fresh snow. I spend a good 4 hours snowshoeing and photographing the trail up to the falls. Had fun shooting color and black and white images of the falls, and shot my way back down the trail, and all the way back to the parking lot, Mine were the only tracks on the trail. Probably something that will never happen again and I loved every minute of being in the Winter Wonderland. Thank you so much for looking

Paradise Creek on the Skyline Trail in Mt Rainier National Park in Washington, "Colors, Colors, Colors" Got out again Sunday and Monday Night to get back up in the mountains and get some more of that amazing fall color before the snow comes and covers it all up. Even though I was hit with rainy, misty, foggy conditions, I was still thrilled to hike through some of the best mountain color I have ever seen in my life in Mt Rainier National Park. I nailed so many amazing images in 3 days, I have no idea where to start, so I will just start with this one. Fall Color and Waterfall along the Paradise River in MT Rainier National Park. This is just a tease of the color I witnessed, more to come. And as luck would have it, I got up for sunrise on Tuesday morning, and the mountain finally came out! I will post that one too! Thank you so much for looking!

Sunset Afterglow and the Point of the Arches Sea Stacks from Shi-Shi Beach in Olympic National Park in Washington..
"Last Light" This is a follow to my last post. I used the same foreground pools, adjusted my composition, and waited for the last light afterglow shot. I love this time of evening on the beach. For you photographers out there, this was shot on my Canon 5DSR, the Image Monster at f/20 and was a 12 second exposure at ISO 100. It was shot with the Cannon 16-35 at 27mm. I believe White Balance was 6400K in my Landscape, (Kodak Elite Chrome Color Palette). I used a 3 stop Grad to balance light, and as always, this is an all in camera image. Sunset Afterglow and Sea Stacks on the Wilderness Beaches of Olympic National Park in Washington. Great place for a 3 day winter backpack, and I can't wait to get back!!! "Morning Light" While Teaching my Big Adventure in the Grand Tetons, we had to hit these the amazing Barns of Mormon Row more than once. “Embarrassed”
Headed out on my days off from the gallery to take Foxy for a hike and shoot sunset. I have done a ton of hiking in the North Cascades, literally thousands of miles. I am embarrassed to say I had never done this hike before! What! How can that be? Did I think I had already done it? I don’t think so. In my mind are there just too many other good hikes in the area to return to? I am not sure how something like this can happen. I am perplexed. Or maybe the universe just wanted me to hold off to hike it at this time, in this moment, so I could have this experience. I will go with that, as Foxy and I had a truly magical experience. I loved the hike up through the Old Growth Forest, then breaking out into meadows, then hiking around the summit to come up the backside to discover a 360 view. (For now, this hike must remain unnamed, sorry) Then a beautiful night hike out! … I will certainly be back to shoot this again and again. A little earlier in the summer when wildflowers are out, as it looked like there was a ton, and again in the fall when the blueberries turn color. Whatever the reason this was not on my radar before it sure is now, and I cannot wait to do it again. Thank you so much for looking.

“Back from Banff”
I am back from Banff and in the gallery in Edmonds for a quick catch up and turn around before I head back out in the field to teach my Big Adventure in the Grand Tetons Class. What an amazing time I had in Banff and Yoho National Parks teaching another fantastic group of students. Even though the weather was not good when I left, Mother Nature treated us well and we had a few fantastic times of light. In this first post, this is actually my last morning in Banff at Lake Louise. I had already cut the class loose the day before but I wanted to catch one more sunrise before heading home. I am so glad I did as the light was amazing! Here is a four image series showing the progression of sunrise from blue hour into morning light. POW! Nailed it! That’s in the Bank! What a finish to a fantastic trip. Even though I said this class would be a one-0time only, I have had quite a few requests that I do it again. If you are interested and would like to be on the notification list, please PM me or send me an email to randall@randalljhodges.com. If there is enough interest, I will do it again next year, why not! Much more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

Sunset Over the Columbia River from Crown Point Along the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Highway in Oregon
"Big Finish" After full day of fall color shooting in the amazing Columbia River Gorge, I had a Big Finish. After spending most of the day in cloudy rainy skies down in the gorge, I made it up to Crown Point just in time to catch a sunset over the Columbia River. I love a couple of small details in this image. The reflection of sunset in the water to the right of the highway, and the couple sitting on a rock out cropping in the right side of the image. See the tiny orange jacket? Click t see it full size. What and end to an epic day! Unfortunately the Gorge left me with a parting gift, as I am just getting over having poison oak on my face! Well earned I say! Thank you so much for looking!

Fall Sunrise Reflections in Lake Wenatchee from Lake Wenatchee State Park in Washington
"Great Start" Just got back from teaching my Fall Color Leavenworth and Lake Wenatchee Class. I had another amazing group of students, who all killed it with my in camera techniques. I usually hope for overcast skies for this class, but we got sunny weather. No problem we just had to work early and late instead of in the middle of the day. When it sunny, my students get to do two sunrises, and a sunset, and stay out to learn star photos, and we finished the first day with a 40 minute exposure. We started day one at sunrise and we had some pretty crazy foggy conditions while the sun was rising, giving us this "Great Start" to our class. This was my first shot. Pow! Nailed it! Put that one in the Bank! That is a great start!I am booking next years class Oct 14&15 2019 if you would like to get in on it. Sunset from Secret Beach in Samuel H Boardman State Park along the Southern Oregon Coast,
"Bang,Big Finish!" Got out for a five day trip to finish off 2018 with a bang. Originally hoped to go to Olympic National Park, but weather had us running south to the Oregon Coast. Found a place on the Southern Oregon Coast to put in some good hiking, and chose this view to return to for sunset, and I was so glad we did. What a beautiful spot! Had amazing sunrises and sunset the whole time, except for Saturday Night, which blew down our tarp, into the fire, right during the making of our dinner. Had to huddle over the stove and settle for soggy Grilled Roast Beef Sandwiches. All part of the job! Happy Hiking Everyone! Thank you so much for looking! Happy New Year!

"Sunset and Sea Stacks" Got out for a three day very cold backpack to the wilderness beaches of Olympic National Park in Washington. Nothing quite like hitting the beaches in the winter. You have to put up with very cold temps and fire building can be a challenge, but you will virtually have the beach to yourself. I nailed a whole bunch of new images in my three days on the beach. I love night hiking these beaches in the winter, and even put down for a few star photos. This is Sunset Over the Point of the Arches on Shi-Shi Beach in Olympic National Park. It will soon hang in both of my galleries. Thank you so much for looking!

Fall Sunrise on Mt Rainier Reflected in Reflection Lakes from Mt Rainier National Park in Washington
"Come out and Play" While at Mt Rainier I shot through 3 days of foggy rainy weather, but on my last morning, the mountain played with me all through sunrise and finally at the tail end, the big boy came out to play. I love the wispy clouds adding drama, with the fall color adding pop in the foreground. Its been an awesome series of fall shoots so far for me this year with 4 down and 3 to go. Tonight I am off to prepare for my Fall Color Class at Leavenworth and Lake Wenatchee. Time turn to a new group of students on to my all in camera style, and get out and get some more of that amazing fall color! Happy Fall Everyone! Thank you so much for looking!

I am bringing the 6 day Big Adventure in the Tetons back in June 2020. "Photography Princess" I would like to wish a very happy birthday to Shyla Dog Super Hiker. This beautiful Photography Princess has been my helper now for the last 13 1/2 years. She has logged over 8000 trail miles now, and images of her have been published all around the world. My book Images of the West is dedicated to her, and all the help she has given me. She has spent her entire career off lease, and for the first 11 years of her life she carried her own pack with her own food, water, and bed-roll. She was retired from that duty when she turned 11(I know carry it for her). I rescued her from a shelter all those years ago and she has rescued me countless times since then. She is such a very important part of my business and our family. This month she turns 14 years old and oh how I wish it was 4. It is so unfair that dogs can not live to be 40. She can still put in a 5 miles day, much more in her own mind, but she gets a bit too sore to do much more than that now. If you have ever visited either one of my galleries while I am working, you have met this beautiful spirit as she still works as a greeter in both galleries. Happy Birthday Shyla Dog Super Hiker, you are so very loved!!!

Sunset With Haystack Rock and the Needles from Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.."Back in the Saddle Again" Freshly back from my 10 day Oregon Coast Class and trying to get un-buried working in my Edmonds Gallery. What a fantastic group we had and a good mix of weather. I always experience so many great moments on trips like this with my students. Here is one of those moments that was extra special to me in this class: After finishing up shooting Thor's well, I walked up behind two of my students sitting on the ground showing each other their images. Thor's well is not for everyone and these two lovely laddies decided not to adventure out into the crazy surf. They shot from above and were taking time to review images together. Molly and Teri were busy looking each others cameras, and complimenting each other on their images. That is the beauty of teaching all in camera photography. They went back and forth for a while and it was so nice to hear the happiness in there voices over their photography and images they captured. Then I yelled out to Molly to show Teri the Heart she has captured while shooting the Spouting Horn. Molly had captured a blast of spray from the Spouting Horn that floated up in a perfect heart. Teri looked at it and says "Oh my Gosh, that is Amazing!" and then these two ladies (who had never met each other before my class).....Hugged!...And they are now friends and making plans to join me in an upcoming adventure together to the Grand Tetons. One of my favorite moments of this class. Well done ladies! This is Sunset From Cannon Beach Oregon, where we started this 10 day adventure! Thank you so much for looking!

Sunrise Alpenglow Over Fall Color and Mt Baker in the Mt Baker Wilderness in the north Cascades of Washington
"Prime Time and Moon Set" Got to sneak out for an overnight to the wilderness of the North Cascades in hopes of finding some fall color up there. Oh Boy! I was not disappointed. Had the pleasure of getting a hike on with a couple of buddies, shout out to Mark Ryker, and Kevin Finn McNeal, for joining me on this Epic Backpack. It was such a fun time as we hiked and power shot the evening light right into sunset, right into full moon photos, then up before sunrise to finish it off with this amazing Alpenglow Sunrise as the full moon set over these beautiful mountains. After packing up camp, we shot our-selves out during fantastic morning light. I got so many amazing images from this one overnight, it was like we were out for 4 days. Sunset Alpenglow Over Mt Baker and the North Cascades. With colors and views like this, it was incredibly hard to leave. Thank you so much for looking!

“Blossoms”
Oh Boy, how I love spring. Every year watching the different flowers and blossoms come into bloom is such a treat. The smell of the blossoms on the giant plum tree in my front yard is awesome this time of year! And the beauty of all of cherry trees in the spring is just fantastic. Daffodils are past their prime already, as are most of the cherry trees, this means soon it will be tulip time! It won’t be long until I am chasing wildflowers in the mountains! I do love flowers and blossoms! I love to catch the cherry blossoms right at blue hour in the morning before sunrise. This only lasts a few minutes each morning, so I try to have my A Game on so I do not miss it! Happy Spring Everyone!

Mt Rainier and Edith Creek in the Fog from the Skyline Trail in Mt Rainier National Park in Washington..."Peek-a-boo" Caught Mt Rainier playing Peekaboo with me. I was hiking in and out of the rain, but I really wanted this shot, so I kept circling back and checking on it, and with some patience the mountain finally came out, but I really enjoyed the this moment when it was trying the best! Love that Fall Color! Happy Hiking Everyone! Thank you so much for looking

Sunrise With Haystack Rock and the Needles From Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast
"Floating Clouds" Here is one from my 10 day class on the Oregon Coast that I had posted a cell shot of the back of my camera of. Now that I have seen it on the big screen, it just might make in the galleries. This was an amazing lasting sunrise as we photographed the puffy floating clouds and they drifted through the scene! What a fun morning with my students. If you would like to join me on an adventure like this, please check out my lessons page at www.randalljhodges.com/Lessons.aspx, and i will teach you to capture images like this right in the camera! Thank you so much for looking!

Sunset Alpenglow Over Wildflowers and Mt Shuksan from Skyline Divide in the Mt Baker Wilderness in Washington
"When Blue Meets Pink" My very favorite time of the night when the blue of night pushes up on the last of alpenglow. It is a magical combination of colors. It is also the time when the wilderness feels the most peaceful to me. I love to put the gear away right after this and start my night hike out. Please excuse my absence from posting as I head out in the field for 18 days to find some magic in the Canadian Rockies...Yep, its my mountain time! Sooooooooo.......When the photographer is out of town the bad-ass backroom sale goes down...In the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in beautiful Downtown Edmonds at 317 Main street, stop on in and get a deal of a lifetime! Thank you so much for looking!

"Mountain Fall Sunrise" From my first fall trip of the year, and awesome backpack into the North Cascades. Love the combination of colors in the foreground, as I has scoped out the spot in the afternoon and knew I needed to come back for sunrise, and we were treated to excellent sunrise light! I am off for my last fall shoot of the year, and going to hit the gorge to see what I can find. Happy Fall Everyone! Thank you so much for looking!

Wildflowers and Creek in the Bugaboo Mountains in British Columbia Canada, "Flower Explosion" I had so much fun playing in the creeks and flowers of the Bugaboo Mountains. We had some clouds build in in the middle of the day so it was time to go play. Spent a couple of hours working compositions in the flower show, that was quite expansive. Definitely some of the best flowers I found this year, and although this hike was a real butt kicker, I loved every minute of it!
A side note for those who expressed interest in my Advanced hiking class Aug 2019 at Mt Rainier National Park (Where we hope to find abundant flowers) Has sold out. I will take 3 names for the wait list if you are interested. Thank you so much for looking!

Sunrise in the Bugaboo Mountains in the Purcell Mountains Bugaboo Provincial Park in Canada
"Nailing the Bugaboo" One of the backpacks during my 18 days in the Canadian Mountains was to Bugaboo Provincial Park. This was a very interesting experience right from the start. To start with there is a problem with porcupines chewing break lines in the parking lot. This means you must surround your car with chicken wire and anchor that with logs and rocks. Then the trail...Well lets call it a climb, as it is short but steeeeeep!. and once you arrive at the top, there is nothing left but Rock Spires, Glacier, snow and ice. If you are not a climber, there is nowhere left to go. But I was taken with this composition right out of camp, and on the second morning sunrise, I capture this: Sunrise in the Bugaboos in the Purcell Mountains in Bugaboo Provincial Park in Canada..Loved every minute of it! Thank you so much for looking! I am off again to teach my wildflower class in Mt Rainier National Park

John attended a six-hour sunset seminar with Randall J. Hodges on Saturday, Sep 17, 2011. This photo was taken from Picture Lake early in the afternoon. Mt. Shuksan was obscured by clouds, in fact never was revealed fully. This is a common experience for professional landscape photographers, but the trip was invaluable to John; he learned lot about photography and attitude. Check out RandallJHodges.com .
We have been recuperating for a week... ;) We will have more photos to share later...
Sunset Alpenglow on Mt Baker with the New Dungeness Lighthouse from the Dungeness Spit in Dungeness National
Recreation Area in Sequim Washington
"Scramble Drill" Went out to shoot lighthouses for a couple of days on the Olympic Peninsula. On the second day we headed over to the Dungeness Spit in Sequim to grab a shot of the New Dungeness Lighthouse with Mt Baker during alpenglow. We almost made it the entire 51/2 miles out to the lighthouse, then I realized I could not line up the shot I was hoping for. It was already well after 4 pm and the sun was sinking fast. The only option was to power hike back about 4 miles so we could line up the shot. This was quit the scramble drill, and power hiking for an hour in a half in soft sand is quite the work out. We made it just in time and I nailed this shot just as the sky lit up in awesome alpenglow. I got to use the new Zoom Monster lens and shot this at 280 mm. Click to see this one full size as the lighthouse is quite small. Thank you so much for looking...Happy Hiking Everyone!

"Amazing Fall" Well my trip into the Columbia River Gorge ends my fall shooting for 2018. I am working in my Edmonds Gallery today, and tomorrow I am off to work in my "Images of the West" Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon. It is time for the Stormy Weather Art Festival and I hope the gallery will be busy with all the Art buyers in town. I cant wait to see the gallery again, and in it and meet all the customers. I will be packing my camera, and showing off my All-In-Camera images right in the back of the camera. If you are in town, stop on in and say hi.
