Sunset Over the San Juan Islands From the Summit of Mt Erie on Fidalgo Island in Anacortes Washington

"Erie Sunset" Made it out for a little overnight trip with Shyla Dog Super Hiker to do some hiking around Anacortes and made it back to the summit of Mt Erie just in time to capture this sunset. Even though you can drive to the top, there is a lot of great hiking you can do either from below or from the summit. A great place to put in some miles with a great big view for the finish! The Holiday sale is still on, and everything in the Edmonds Gallery is at least 10% off with some pieces up to 50% off. We have calendars on sale, buy 3 for $25, note cards are 3 for $10. Puzzles are on sale also. At the Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon has its holiday sale, buy 2 of the same priced item and get 10% off...this really adds up if you are getting Lumachrome HD Acrylics. Thank you so much for looking, Happy Holidays Everyone!!!

"Back in the Saddle Again" Well after 18 days in the Olympics, and 8 more days teaching my 2 sold out classes on Mt Rainier, I am finally back in the gallery to dig myself out and remember what it is like to be in society. Both of the galleries did awesome and gave me lots of work to catch up on which I love! Had a couple of great groups and my second group was an advanced hiking class. They got to see more of Mt Rainier in 51/2 days than most people will see in the entire lives! Took them to all my favorite spots all the way around the mountain. Ran into a bunch of other photogs out there. Shout out to Kevin Russell, Ian McRae, Aaron Reed, Maryanne Trengove, Gina Dasher, Jennifer Grand, and I probably forgot a couple, but nice bumping into you all out there! Nice meeting a couple of you for the first time. The wildflowers were peaking and fantastic almost everywhere we went, and both my classes nailed it and put in in the bank. What a month it has been out in the field! Now if I can remember what it is like to be in town, hopefully I will not be caught peeing in the yard! That is what happens when you spend too much time in the wilderness! Caught this sweet last light on Mt Rainier and its ever changing fog and cloud formations. Thank you so much for looking!

“Gallery Shot!”

Just returned home from teaching another sold out class. This one was the Big Adventure at Palouse Falls and in the Palouse Hills. Had another amazing group of students, and we were treated to some dramatic weather. This was especially true on our first night at Palouse Falls. A thunderhead built and rained on us a little then broke up. Luckily the ruminants hung around through sunset and I captured this new gallery shot of the falls. Look closely and you can see the rainbow. It will be in the front window of the Edmonds Gallery tomorrow, and one the way to the Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach on Metal. Lots more to come from this trip also. I have 6 days left to get the galleries caught up before I head out in the field again to teach my Big Adventure in Central and Eastern Oregon…Its busy season! Thank you so much for looking!

"Shangri la" One of the most beautiful waterfall views I have ever had the good fortune to view with my own eyes. This one will take you quite a bit of work to get to as it lies deep into the Grand Canyon. After a 10 mile backpack into the canyon, you are still left with a four mile hike that included climbing down a cliff with chains and ladders, crossing a waist high river multiple times during a rather challenging hike. But the views are spectacular all along the way, and I captured so many gallery shots during the adventure, making it all worthwhile. My eyes just could not believe what I was seeing. I visited this area way back in my slide film days, and I am so glad I got to make it back in this lifetime. A totally amazing adventure in all possible ways. I will certainly post more from this area and a whole lot more from my 18 days in the Desert Southwest. Thank you so much for looking

“Back to the big Adventure, Hitting the Big 5”

Back to my 18 day adventure hiking and backpacking Washington’s Big 5 Volcanoes. We did 5 nights around Mt Rainier, and this was one spectacular night! I believe each one of the images stands along as a gallery shot! I loved watching the clouds race across the mountain making each and every shot different and unique, finishing with the moon popping out in just the right place at the right time!. This is one of those nights I will remember always, and every time I look at these images I want to drop everything and head back into the mountains. But for now please excuse my absence from posting as Gracie the Adventure Van and I head back out into the field to teach my Big Adventure on the Central and Southern Oregon Coast. Feels like I have been in the mountains forever this summer, so this will be a real change of pace. And as always, these are shot Old-School Style All-in-Camera. And I would like to clear something up. Many photographer assume because I shoot All-In-Camera, I must be shooting in Jpg. This is not True, as I shoot in Raw, and convert the image in my Cannon DPP4 Software to a big boy Tiff File for printing. In both of my Galleries, the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds Washington, and my Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon, we make REALLY BIG Prints! The time it takes for me to convert an image to be ready for print from the camera takes less than 60 seconds… This the bonus of being an All-in-Camera shooter, no post processing time, so more time in the field. If you don’t understand how this is possible, come take a class, I will teach it to you also! Thank you so much for looking, and Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!

“Sunset, Sunrise Mono Lake”

Just back in the gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. It was so nice to be in shorts and t-shirts again and experience some nice warm sunshine! I had another great group of students, and I gave them one heck of a tour of Death Valley and the Alabama Hills. They all did a great job learning and using my Old-School, All-In-Camera Techniques. I have a ton of new images to show from this trip, but I decided to show my very last shooting day first. After class, I visited the amazing Eureka Dunes deep in the Death Valley Back County and I have some epic shots to show from that location. Heading out from there we made it to Mono Lake just in time to capture the very best sunset I have ever seen on this unique Lake. The very high salt content of mono Lake creates these strange formations call Tufa’s. I love these fascinating formations and finally on my 5th visit to the area I got the Gallery Shots I have been looking for. That was followed up by an excellent sunrise, then it was a two-day drive to get back home. Lots more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

“Alpenglow in the Dunes”

After suffering through a crazy windstorm the day before, I found the dunes to be wiped clean of footprints and I was able to capture this wide open view in alpenglow. This is kind of one of my secret locations in the dunes that I would bring my students to on the next night. I am booking my Big Adventure in Death Valley Class for 2022, Feb 21-26, the cost is $995 per student with a $500 deposit for the entire 6 days of this spectacular class! Please give me a call 425-210-2506 if you would like more info or to book your spot, and I will trach you to shoot like this, right in the camera! Thank you so much for looking!

"Worth the Wait" After teaching another fantastic group of students in my Wallace Falls Class, I decided I was up for a big mini adventure in the park. I hiked my students back out to the parking lot, secured a campsite, repacked my backpack, and headed out to complete a 13 mile loop. I pumped out the couple miles to the falls and gave them another shot (I have shot the falls more times that I can count) and they are always spectacular! But then I realized I was behind schedule, and I really had to pick up the pace if I was going to make it for sunset. The climbing got steeper as I passed upper falls, and mad it to the ridge. Alright, less than an hour to go and 3 miles left, pick up the pace some more. I was now on flat ground and started hauling you know what, then I hiked into snow. Oh No, that was slowing my pace, making the hiking much more difficult. I slipped and slide my way along the trail trying to keep my head down and keep up the pace. I crap, I am not going to make it, hike faster. Oh No the hills are glowing, hike faster. Ok try Jogging with the pack. No Go, to much weight, Hike faster, Ok I’m passing the lake, keep up the pace. Oh No, I'm not going to make, hurry, hurry, Bam, I made it, and it’s happening, throw down the camera gear as fast as I can, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it, Pow Nailed that! That’s in the bank! Bam! Then it was gone! And I was chilling down fast, burr!, time to pack it all up super-fast and enjoy the 6 miles back to camp in an epic night hike! And after 15 years of wanting to get this shot in these conditions, I did it! And it was worth the wait! Thank you so much for looking!

“Crazy Cloud” Just got back from spending 4 days shooting and hiking in Central Oregon. I was supposed to be in the North Cascades shooting Fall Color, but was pushed south by bad weather and too much snow. Instead I enjoyed shorts and t-shirt hiking on the most beautiful trails. After a couple of days of cloudless skies, we were treated to a big finish as the Crazy Cloud formed and grew, then put on a light show that was just hard to believe! Something new for the galleries I think! What a way to finish and amazing trip! Thank you so much for looking.

"Epic Night" Headed out to the Mt Rainier area to film a new episode of my video series "Out in the field with Randall J Hodges" on Monday Night. Hit the trail with my good buddy and new video guy Randy Gamer. We hoisted some pretty heavy backpacks, hiked in, set up camp, and hit the trail exploring for that perfect sunset spot. We got a little of track, had to put in some extra mileage and serious climbing, but we made it to this spot. Clouds were moving in and rain was coming, but in the changeover, magic happened in the mountains. Swirling fog, ever-changing views, but in the end, the sunset happened and it was epic! You will certainly see more from this amazing adventure, and hopefully we can have the video out in 3 weeks or so, then you can see how I captured this shot, on the spot, All-in Camera! Thank you so much for looking!

Sunrise with Ruby Mountain over Ross Lake in the Ross Lake National Recrteation Area in the north Cascades in Washington

"Pastel Sunrise" Got out for an early season backpack trip to the North Cascades. What an excellent time it was to be lost in the wilderness for a few days. We did not see another person and had the camps all to ourselves. Caught this sunrise on Monday Morning and was really happy with the soft pastel color above the fog. What a beautiful start to an amazing day. Happy Hiking Everyone!

"Smoking" I am back in the Edmonds Gallery after a couple of weeks out in the field to teach my Bryce Canyon Escalante Class in the beautiful Desert Southwest. I took a three day layover at Mt Hood on my way to grab a new gallery shot. I am not sure which of the shots I captured that I will select for my galleries, but this one is certainly a contender. I love reflections, and this lake was big enough, and conditions were breezy enough, that they were hard to come by, but two of the mornings gave me calm conditions. On this morning, the mountain was making some clouds that continued to stream off of it like there was a fire in the mountain and it was smoking out of its chimney. So much fun to watch and shoot! As an All-In-Camera shooter, the use of graduated split neutral density filters is a necessity, and on this image I used a 2 stop hard on top to the horizon line, and a 1 stop hard pushed down to the rocks in the foreground to balance light. I am very proud to be an ambassador for Singh-Ray Filters, as I believe they are the best, and all I use and recommend.

Sunrise and Sea Stacks in the Surf from Face Rock Beach in Bandon Oregon...

"Rockin Out" I so love shooting Sea Stack Rock Formations on the beautiful beaches of the West. It is especially fun to put on my Noes Over-boats and just let the waves hit me as I use shutter speeds and timing to make different foregrounds. Even though on this morning some good size waves came through, ended up liking this smaller one as the shallow depth of the water still let the reflections of the sea stacks show through. Of course the goal is to keep the hiking boots dry with the over-boots, but sometimes one comes in that is to big, and its wet feet again! Thank you so much for looking!

"Framed" Another Contender for my galleries from my visit to Mt. Hood. This will go against one from a couple of posts ago, as I will only have room in the galleries for one. I really like the framing of the trees in this image, and a big thank you to Mother Nature for this amazing calm and peaceful morning. To balance light in this image I used the Singh-Ray Galen Rowell 3-stop Split Neutral density Filter on top, and a 2-stop split neutral density filter upside down on the bottom. This is how we do in All-In Camera! Thank you so much for looking

"Clearing Drama" Got out for an overnight backpack into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Waited out some thunderstorms while setting up camp, but then the weather started to clear and we were able to get out and do some exploring. After setting up in a few other locations but not feeling satisfied, we decided to make a big and very strenuous move to this location. Slippery rock and some climb-overs and scrambling was exhausting, but so worth it to end up in this location. It was so exciting to watch the clearing drama right at sunset light up the clouds and peak, just as the water calmed enough to grab this reflection shot. Well worth the effort! “Magic Happened” I made my why back to Mt Rainier for a quick 2-nighter to see if any new flower fields had popped up since I was there teaching a couple of weeks ago. I am so glad I did. I got to experience one of those once in a lifetime sunsets that exploded across the sky. The fire in the sky was super intense and seemed to go on and on forever. These are the nights that make me remember why I wanted to be a professional landscape photographer all those years ago. Even though I am out in the field almost a 150 days a year, sunsets like this one are just so rare. It’s been a long time since I have been so jacked up after a photo shoot. In my next post, I will post all the different compositions I was able to capture during this magic event, but for now I have to let this one stand alone, as this will be my newest gallery shot, and it will be in both the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds Washington, and soon it will be in my Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon. And as always, All-in-Camera. Thank you so much for looking!

Creek and Wildflowers and Mt Anthabasca from Wilcox Pass in Jasper National Park in Canada

"Creek, Wildflowers, and Mt Athabasca" From my summer adventures in the Canadian Rockies. This was such a fun hike that turned into a thunderstorm overhead breaking up in sunset with a herd of Big Horn Sheep walking right through my photo. But it all stated with this first shot of this creek flowing away from me with wildflowers and Mt Athabasca. Both of my galleries will be closed for Thanksgiving, but both will be opened up for black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Consider skipping the malls, or shopping on line, and come into your neighborhood town and support your local small businesses like mine. “It almost Blew Up!”

Just returned from a weekend working in my Images of the West gallery in Cannon Beach. Now I am back for a few days in the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds. Just enough time to get all my orders out and get both galleries caught up before I head out for 13 days to teach my Big Adventure in Bryce Canyon (Sold Out). After my shift in the Images of the West Gallery, I hit the beach, put in 8 miles, and on the way back, I stopped for sunset. It rained off and on off the entire hike, but somehow, someway, the sun popped out and gave me a very nice stormy sunset, and this thing almost totally blew up into a full on light show. But Mother Nature kept it subdued, knocking it out at the very last moment. I still really enjoy the stormy look of these images, which really represents how hiking the beach felt. Thank you so much for looking.

"High in the Sky" I had to get back up high in the sky for Alpine Wonderings again in the North Cascades. Another fantastic location with 360 degree views. Shout out to Ben Marar who came up and joined me to camp above it all. We had a good time exploring the area shooting Sunset and Sunrise. I had to stay up again for star photos. If you look close in the Sunset image with Mt Baker, can see my tent in the lower right, not a bad place to camp at all! Even though we had great clouds earlier in the evening, they all seemed to dissipate right before sunset. I will be out in the field again this Friday teaching my sold out Weekend at Cannon Beach class, and I am super exited to get to go say hello to my Images of the West Gallery, by Randall J Hodges. It is always a treat for me when I get to see the gallery again, and I get to take Shyla Dog Super Hiker with me, so she can visit the beach again in her retirement. Foggy Fall Day on the Skyline Trail in Mt Rainier National Park in Washington..

"Foggy Fall Trail" Does Hiking get any better than this? Maybe as good but not better, at least in my opinion. I could not stop hiking these trails and hiked them well after dark, soaking in all that unbelievable color. This was the best year for fall color I have ever seen at Mt Rainier, which made up for a pretty poor flower show on the mountain this year. I have just returned back to the gallery after 6 more days of shooting Cascade Mountain fall color and have a whole new batch of amazing images. But I had to post another from my trip to Mt Rainier. Happy Hiking, Happy Fall Everyone! Thank you so much for looking!

Sunset Moose and the Grand Tetons, Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming "Moose Sunset" While teaching my Grand Tetons Class this summer, we were all set up for sunset when a moose came out. My students got very excited, started changing lenses and shooting her. I did not bother shooting it, I was already set up for sunset with my graduated split neutral density filters on. So I just helped the students, yelling out settings, do this, do that and so on, helping them get their moose shots. They were nailing it, and I was very excited for them. Then the moose started walking off, so they went back to change lenses again, but wait....... ....wait......is he going to walk through my photo? ........wait........wait.....Pow nailed it! I personally only got one shot off of this moose.....and this seems to be the only way I photograph wildlife, when it walks through my photo! Some of the students were like "No way!, Did she just walk right though your photo" and I was like "Yep, one shot, nailed it! Put it in the bank!" Luck is the 4th aspect of good photography! Thank you so much for looking!

“And for the First night”

I am finally back in my Edmonds Gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. What a great group I had, and we enjoyed photography and the warm weather, and I got a good start on good a tan for the year. After driving for almost 13 hours on my first day (It’s a 19 hour drive from my house to Death Valley) I arrived at my first nights camp 30 minutes before sunset. I put Gracie the Cabin up on her ramps, grabbed my camera gear and started speed hiking. I got to this spot just and the sun started to set and nailed a series of amazing images and Put them in the Bank! This one ended up being my favorite. I am booking next year’s Big adventure in Death Valley now, Feb 21-26 2022. $995 per student with a $500 deposit. "Deep, Deep, Deep! Just returned from 18 days of backpacking deep into Olympic National Park. What an experience to be deep in the wilderness for so long. This particular photo is shot approximately 23 miles from the car. In all I hiked 174 miles in 17 days with something like 29,000 feet of elevation gain and loss with an average pack of 55-60lbs...Let’s just say I got worked. But so worth it. The next day as we continued on this loop, we saw 6 bears in one hike! I am back in my Edmonds Gallery for a couple of days, then it is off to teach my 2 sold out classes at Mt Rainier.

Sunset Wildflowers and Mt St Helens from Johnston Ridge in Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington

"Last Glow" I posted a sunrise from my trip to Mt St Helens, I thought I would follow it up with a Sunset. I love capturing the bit of sun glow as it turns the mountain red, then it is gone! I find it so amazing this time of year that that last glow almost looks the same at Sunrise at it does at Sunset. The sun angle is so perfect for this mountain at this time of year. Thank you so much for looking!

"From the Top of the World" Here is the view of my camp on top of the world in the North Cascades National Park in Washington. Oh Boy, you are going to have to work to get to this camped perched on the edge of a 3000 foot drop. Nothing but Rock Snow and ice up here. But what A View from camp. I will post a sunrise from here soon, but I really loved this 40 minute exposure with the Milky Way. If you look close you can see a couple of small meteors went during the exposure. Shout out to Kevin Finn Mcneil for joining me on this but kicking adventure! I may have to add this to both of my galleries! Happy Labor Day Weekend Everyone

Sunset from Panorama Point Over Garibaldi Lake and Mt Garibaldi in Garibaldi Provincial Park in British Columbia Canada"Panorama Visions" The last stop on my epic 18-day adventure in the beautiful mountains of Canada. A sweet 2 night backpack into Garibaldi Provincial Park. What a fantastic trip this was with my buddy Brian Moore. We hiked and camped the entire time in glorious mountain scenery. The first day was a push as we backpacked the 6 miles to camp, then a 10 mile round trip to shoot Panorama Point a sunset, only to get shut down. But we made our way back to Panorama Point on night two. We were treated a super amazing long lasting rainbow on the way up, I will post that soon, then we got this amazing sunset light. What a way to cap off epic trip. Then of course, got to do the 5 mile night hike back to camp, perfect! Sunset from Panorama Point Over Garibaldi Lake and Mt Garibaldi in Garibaldi Provincial Park in British Columbia Canada, thank you so much for looking!

"A CLASSIC" A little story for you. This is one of the images that helped launch my career as a professional Landscape photographer. I had been doing photography professional for a couple of years, but had not quit my job as a chef/Restaurant manager yet, and this was one of the images that helped make that possible. It was shot in 2003 on an 11 day backpack trip all the way around Mt Rainier on the Wonderland Trail. This is shot on Kodak Elite Chrome Slide Film, before digital, and before Photoshop and post-processing took over everything. It was also images like this that gave me my niche as being "Not Digitally Altered", which through time has turned into "Old School, All in Camera" shooting. Shortly after I shot this image, I took my photography full time. As a showing artist out on the Northwest Art Circuit, people would come in my booth and say stuff like "Nice Photoshop Dude" then I would show them a sheet of my slides and have them hold them up to the light and compare....Then I would get something like "Wow! you really know what you are doing" And my "Old School, All in Camera" Style was born, as you could not alter a slide. I shot slide film well into the digital age. So long all my students were digital, and I was the only one shooting film. Then two things happened: the Cannon 5D Mark 2 came out, which had the ability to match my slide film, and out of the 400 publishers I worked with worldwide, 80% dropped film. So I switched over and after about 2 weeks of testing, I had mimicked all my old films right in the camera and continued to shoot that Old School Style. I continue that "All-In Camera, Old School Style" to this day, and I truly believe it is why I have now been in business for 18 years, 15 of them being full time. This is Sunset Mt Rainier with a Lenticular Cloud from the Wonderland Trail in Mt Rainier National Park in Washington. It was shot at f/22 and was a 2 second exposure with a 3 stop graduated split neutral density filter on Kodak Elite Chrome Slide Film, and as always, All In Camera! Thank you so much for looking and reading!

Mt Shuksan Reflected in Picture Lake from Heather Meadows in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington..

"Reflected" As one of the most photographed mountains in the country, Mt Shuksan Reflected in Picture Lake is a must have for any serious photographer. I personally never tire of shooting this mountain, and it is one of the classes I teach every year. If you live in the northwest and have not visited this fantastic area, it should be moved up to first on your bucket list. Hikes galore come out of this area and each one is as it as hiking gets anywhere in the world. If you would like to get in on my class for next year, the date is Sept 21, 2019 and the cost is $200 per student. Just give me a call at 425-210-2506, or email me at randall@randalljhodges.com. This one does sell out, so if you are interested, get a hold of me. Snow is pilling up in the mountains now, its time to prepare for a winter backpacking trip!

Happy Hiking, thank you so much for looking!

“Shyla’s Sunset”

On this day I was in Sedona Arizona. I had received a call from my wife that my beautiful doggie Shyla was not doing good, she had taken a turn. Not wanting this beautiful spirit to suffer, I decided that I needed to fly home to help her over the Rainbow Bridge. So my amazing wife booked me a flight and made all the arrangements for the next day. I knew while I was shooting this sunset in Sedona, that this would be the last sunset my special girl would be alive for. Even though we were not together physically, I felt her with me spiritually. So this image will always be called “Shyla’s Sunset. I made the flight home, and we spoiled her with a tenderloin steak for lunch, and gave all the treats she wanted. We hired a special service to come to the house to help on her way. Over the next year I will be spreading Shyla’s Ashes in all of her favorite places she got to hike with me. There will never be another Doggie like Shyla. She was the world’s greatest photographer helper, and gallery attendant, and super best friend and family member, and she will be missed and remembered always. I Love you Shyla and miss you every day. I hope you enjoy Shyla’s Sunset.

"Amazing Rays" Generally I teach my students to find the composition first, then wait for light to be perfect and nail it. But sometimes light dictates composition as in this scene. High up in the Olympic Mountains I had a perfect composition set up in another direction, then these amazing rays happened and it was time to change it up an nail it and put it in the bank!!! We have a big event coming up in my Cannon Beach Gallery, Images of the West. This weekend is the amazing Earth an Ocean event, mixing art, music and the environment in Cannon Beach. This is a big celebration to bring awareness of the environment on the beautiful planet we call home. I hope you will come on down to Cannon Beach and celebrate with us! 224 North Helock Suite #1 Cannon Beach, OR 97110.
