Ramsgate Tunnels. Ramsgate Tunnels. Tunnelling through the chalk 50 to 75 feet below Ramsgate's streets, 80 men using picks and shovels dug out 3.25 miles of tunnels, 7 feet high by 6 feet wide, with alcoves for chemical toilets, in 8 months in 1939, for use as bomb shelters. They saved countless lives during WWII.
