Amazingly this ferry has served Ramsgate for 26 years. Built in 1976 as the Gedser she started work on for Sally Line on the Ramsgate - Dunkerque route in 1986 as Viking 2. In 1988 she was re-named Sally Sky and lengthened at Immingham. In 1997 she was renamed Eurotraveller and moved to the Oostende route before taking her current name in 1999.
The Grange was built on the clifftops at Ramsgate in the early 1840s by the gothic revival architect Augustus Pugin as his family home.
After institutional use for much of the twentieth century the house was restored by the Landmark Trust and is now let out by them as holiday accommodation. I visited when it was part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.
House, now furniture showrooms 1792 by Mrs. Mary Townley. Rendered with slate roof. Three storeys projecting central block and 2 storey wings, on plinth, with rusticated ground floor, string course and cornice to roof, with balustraded panelled parapet to wings. Stacks to left and to right of centre block. Five bays to centre, 2 to each wing. Glazing bar sashes throughout, of extra large size on ground floor of wings. Large projecting 2 storey bow to centre, on 5 arches on Tuscan columns, with balcony over whole bow, cornice and balustraded parapet. Central French window on 1st floor, with Y-tracery fanlight, and deep niches left and right with classical statues. Central glazed door with rectangular fanlight. Interior: simple balustraded elliptical stair with open string. Arched entrance passageway. Simple moulded cornices and skirting to main rooms, with fine metal fittings to door. The house was designed and lived in by Mary Townley, a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Townleys were the leaders of late C18/early C19 Ramsgate Society, the house receiving many distinguished and royal visitors. Ramsgate has the ONLY Royal Harbour in the UK and it's easy to see why! You can take a walk around the marina and admire the craft or walk the pier to admire the outer harbour and views across the channel. Harbour-side, there is a wonderful array of bistros, wine bars, shops and galleries. If you want to eat, there are enough restaurants to the satisfying palate. With south-facing beaches and its own climate, a summer visit is a must. Come again at Christmas time and you will see every boat festooned with Christmas light.

Scan from a 35mm Kodachrome 200 transparency (the image needs a lot more processing to get the colours right, but I thought I'd upload it anyway).
Revised version (of original scan) uploaded 2-1-2024, but would still benefit from further processing to lighten up the darkest greens.
