The terminus was opened in 1863 by the Kent Coast Railway (later part of the LCDR) as Ramsgate; when the KCR became part of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway in 1871 it was renamed Ramsgate and Saint Lawrence-on-Sea. In 1899 the LCDR and South Eastern Railway formed a working union, the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, and they renamed the station again, to Ramsgate Harbour. The Southern Railway built a new line on the outskirts of the town in 1826 with a new Ramsgate station which resulted in the closure of Ramsgate Harbour station and the ex-SER Ramsgate Town station. Ramsgate station, Kent, 4 September 2020. Ramsgate Town station was opened by the SER in 1846 and Ramsgate Harbour station was opened in 1863 by the Kent Coast Railway (later part of the LCDR); both were termini and unconnected with each other. Surprisingly, when the SER and LCDR formed the SECR in 1899, which planned to improve this situation, it was left to its successor, the Southern Railway, to build a new link line between the SER and LCDR routes on which they built a new Ramsgate station in 1926, the two earlier stations being closed. The architects of the new station were James Robb Scott and Edwin Maxwell Fry, modernist architects, who built the station in New Classical style with an Egyptian theme. Discoveries in the Valley of the Kings had been made recently. Pictured is the station awning.

The construction of Ramsgate Harbour began in 1749 and was completed in about 1850.

The Harbour has the unique distinction of being the only harbour in the United Kingdom awarded the right to call itself a Royal Harbour. This was bestowed by King George IV after he was taken by the hospitality shown by the people of Ramsgate when he used the harbour to depart and return with the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1821.

The Grange was built on the clifftops at Ramsgate in the early 1840s by the gothic revival architect Augustus Pugin as his family home.

After institutional use for much of the twentieth century the house was restored by the Landmark Trust and is now let out by them as holiday accommodation. I visited when it was part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.

House, now furniture showrooms 1792 by Mrs. Mary Townley. Rendered with slate roof. Three storeys projecting central block and 2 storey wings, on plinth, with rusticated ground floor, string course and cornice to roof, with balustraded panelled parapet to wings. Stacks to left and to right of centre block. Five bays to centre, 2 to each wing. Glazing bar sashes throughout, of extra large size on ground floor of wings. Large projecting 2 storey bow to centre, on 5 arches on Tuscan columns, with balcony over whole bow, cornice and balustraded parapet. Central French window on 1st floor, with Y-tracery fanlight, and deep niches left and right with classical statues. Central glazed door with rectangular fanlight. Interior: simple balustraded elliptical stair with open string. Arched entrance passageway. Simple moulded cornices and skirting to main rooms, with fine metal fittings to door. The house was designed and lived in by Mary Townley, a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Townleys were the leaders of late C18/early C19 Ramsgate Society, the house receiving many distinguished and royal visitors.
