What is pink and hunts like a treetop flycatcher?

They look and behave differently from our Acorn and Nuttall's Woodpeckers. It has me doubting that they are woodpeckers at all. I think I'll take this up with the experts at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology. (AKA dead bird museum) www.wfvz.org/index.php

"A California specialty, Nuttall's Woodpecker extends only a short distance into Baja and rarely strays to Oregon. Within its limited range, it is often common wherever oak trees grow. It may go unseen at times because of its habit of foraging among densely foliaged oaks, but it frequently announces itself with sharp calls. Despite its close association with oaks, it tends to dig its nesting holes in other kinds of trees, and it eats only small numbers of acorns."allaboutboids

These tree monkeys tend to stick to the dark side of a tree trunk. This one was peeking out to watch us. : )

The water bowl was very popular this day. I am almost at eye level with the Hairy Woodpecker... a bit far away. A comfortable distance for the birds. I have some good photos of him sitting with bright eyes and white tummy but this is the one I chose. This is why we bird watch.

Happy Arachtober 2020!

What a crazy year. 11 months ago I was in New Zealand with my dad, and I am SO GLAD we did that when we had the chance. Who knows when I'll feel safe enough about getting on a plane again? But I brought back a haul of spider photos from there that I'll be sharing this month.

This was one of many spiders I found hanging out in their webs one night as I prowled around my ex-train-car lodging at the southern end of New Zealand's North Island. These were quite common here and at the other location where I went spider hunting. They are found in Australia as well as New Zealand, and are thought to have gotten to NZ by ballooning on the wind. That's a far flight for a spider! They are the most common species of spider in NZ, a statement from this site that was backed up by my own observations.

I hope you are all doing well and hanging in there!

Pōhutukawa Trees....

Metrosideros excelsa is a coastal evergreen tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, that produces a brilliant display of red flowers made up of a mass of stamens. The pōhutukawa is one of twelve Metrosideros species endemic to New Zealand. Renowned for its vibrant colour and its ability to survive even perched on rocky, precarious cliffs, it has found an important place in New Zealand culture for its strength and beauty and is regarded as a chiefly tree (rākau rangatira) by Māori. The blossom of the tree is called kahika.

The pōhutukawa grows up to 25 metres (82 ft) high, with a spreading, dome-like form. It usually grows as a multi-trunked spreading tree. Its trunks and branches are sometimes festooned with matted, fibrous aerial roots. The oblong, leathery leaves are covered in dense white hairs underneath.

The tree flowers from November to January with a peak in mid to late December (the Southern Hemisphere summer), with brilliant crimson flowers covering the tree, hence the nickname New Zealand Christmas tree. There is variation between individual trees in the timing of flowering, and in the shade and brightness of the flowers. In isolated populations genetic drift has resulted in local variation: many of the trees growing around the Rotorua lakes produce pink-shaded flowers, and the yellow-flowered cultivar 'Aurea' descends from a pair discovered in 1940 on Mōtiti Island in the Bay of Plenty.

Originally from England, Thrushes were brought to NZ in 1867. Song Thrushes are very common in NZ. This one singing it's lungs out at the Otorohanga Kiwi House.

Mt Paku in Tairua is a volcanic peak rising up between the southern end of Tairua Beach and the Tairua harbour mouth. 7-8 million years ago, Paku’s origins as an island volcano commenced with an eruption of ash and pumice. About 6,500 years ago, sea levels rose and allowed the sandspit north of Paku to develop and establish a land bridge, connecting the island volcano to what we now know as Tairua.

Pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), also known as the New Zealand Christmas tree, or iron tree, is a coastal evergreen tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, that produces a brilliant display of red (or occasionally orange, yellow or white flowers, each consisting of a mass of stamens. The pōhutukawa is one of twelve Metrosideros species endemic to New Zealand. Renowned for its vibrant colour and its ability to survive even perched on rocky, precarious cliffs, it has found an important place in New Zealand culture for its strength and beauty, and is regarded as a chiefly tree (rākau rangatira) by Māori

It’s been a while since our Angeles Crest adventure but we are still talking about it. W9 and I have implored Lou Orr to simply attach us to his roof rack because every seat in his car was taken for a trip up to the Chilao Visitor Center in the San Gabriel Mountains. On this day Jerry drives us. The weather was perfect and the skies were blue.

Jerry and I have hiked many of the trails here over the years before we found birdwatching. The Manzanita Campground was unexplored territory. You might need a parking pass and you need to research where they are sold. To use a camp site you need to pre-pay for that too. W9 has an expression “too hard basket.”

On this day Lou met us and then took the vanguard....soon we were seeing the mountains from a new perspective. This campground would be closed until Spring the very next day. We stop and read the large signs with the rules and regulations. Scratching our heads we pile back into our SUVs. Lou heads up into the elevated campground, stops suddenly, and jumps out with motor running yelling in a loud whisper “quail.” His enthusiasm is contagious. Lewis’s Woodpeckers are flying overhead. The venue is new and exciting. The views are spectacular. We park at a campsite. There is a post tagged with expired permits flapping in the gentle breeze.

It was originally going to be toned but after much playing around I decided I liked this version best!

Another version might be posted at a later date.

For those of you who want to know about the tree it's a Cabbage Tree or more properly Cordyline Australis ... They are a NZ native, they have sword type leaves and grow to about 15 metres. The plant is rich in carbohydrate, the Maori used to cook the root of a young Cabbage tree or Tī rākau/ Tī kōuka as a food source which is probably how it got its common name.

The new Bus Interchange on a walk around the city on a damp grey day August 29, 2015 Christchurch, New Zealand to catch up on what's happing.

The Bus Interchange incorporates integrated artwork by Ngāi Tahu artists. The artworks are based on the Narrative provided by Matapopore Trust on behalf of Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga. The narrative is centred around Ngāi Tahu migrations from afar, from the North Island and within Kā Pākihi-whakatekateka-a-Waitaha,(Canterbury Plains).

A number of constellations used by sea-faring navigators adorn the passenger lounge ceilings and bird life on the indoor tree-shaped columns represent those gathered near Hine-Pāka, the great Fowling Tree.

The outdoor Colombo Street columns will feature a war party of chiefs lead by Tu-rakau-tahi into Kā Pākihi-whakatekateka-a-Waitaha (Canterbury Plains). To the south is a column that will depict Te Muru looking out over the awa Ōpāwaho (Heathcote River). Through occupation and use he was acknowledged by whānau of Kaiapoi as the Kaitiaki of the awa (Guardian of the river).

A large compass is etched into the stone outside the main entrance pointing to the significant places depicted in the Narrative. Karakia (prayer/blessings) asking for good health, strength, enlightenment and safe travels are located near each of the five entrances.

Interpretation panels telling the story of each piece are located throughout the Interchange.

"Poutokomanawa is a large, carved wooden post found inside a traditional Maori ancestral house or meeting house, not a standalone totem pole. It functions as a central support post that holds up the ridgepole of the roof, providing structural stability and symbolically representing a carved ancestor. These posts are a form of whakairo rakau, or wood carving, which is a significant art form in Maori culture. "AI Summary. The Poutokomanawa at the Albatross Centre, Harrington Point Road, Otago Peninsula, Dunedin, New Zealand. Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the label at the bottom of the post to get the detailed description of that particular post but here is a Facebook description of the post by the Royal Albatross Centre.

"The carving you see is the poutokomanawa or heart post carved from mataī that stands in the middle of the Royal Albatross Centre. It was carved by the people of Ōtakou in 1990, 150 years after the initial signing of Te Tiriti, and beautifully represents their whakapapa, their ancestry, those that came before. Tahu Pōtiki stands at the top, leader of Kai Tahu, and below him are his descendants who travelled south, some who eventually settled at Pukekura." www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1127020052804541&id=1...

This is the fourth version of Poraru in his Toa form. I recently realized that I haven't actually built a full MOC Toa team since I was a kid, and decided to rectify that, basing the body type and design on a relatively recent MOC. I hadn't planned on a team back when I built Kyrehx but was also quite happy with that design, so I'm rolling with it. Four more Toa will round out the team, and they might even get a villain to go with. Stay tuned for the rest in the coming months!

This spider is a hunter rather than a web-sitter, and the reason for that is because its favorite prey IS a web-sitter, which isn't going to leave its web and go wandering into another. That prey is the spider I posted yesterday and its cousin in the Badumna species. Like them, this spider also came over to New Zealand from Australia. I posted yesterday's spider in the comment below. They were at the same location; I hope she escaped notice!

An ancient Rimu, standing proud in a remnant of original native forest.

In memory, of a sheep farmer in Wellington back in the 1860s who fenced off 7 hectares of native forest from livestock. Across the Wellington peninsula, a lot of large natives, including Rimu, were felled for the use of timber and to clear land for farming and infrastructure. Once widespread, fewer Rimu stand as the lucky ones.

Aaaaand that's six for six! The team is finally complete - this was a really fun project to work on and was nice, consistent moccing "comfort food". I plan to follow up with some outdoor group shots, and maybe after a bit of a break will whip up a villain for the Toa Motu to face off against, but for now the project is complete! There's just something very satisfying about a team of six colour coded elemental heroes with similar body types...

Auckland Museum has several examples of Toi whakairo (art carving) or just whakairo (carving) a Māori traditional art of carving in wood, stone or bone.

One example of Mãori Whakairo rakau (wood carving).

Hello! This is my first upload. Idrk how this all works, so I hope it works right... ehe ^.^"

This is just a little woodland ninja Protector I made. Figured I'd pull my punches and start small. His name is the Maori word for "tree".

A former member of the elusive Nynrah Ghosts, Arai was often shunned for his ethical disagreements with his colleagues. Refusing to be a test subject upon becoming a Toa, he was outcast - with no home to protect, he decided to becoming a wandering adventurer and defend settlements without Toa of their own. Soon others began joining the Toa of Iron, and thus the Toa Motu were formed; with Arai as their founder and leader.
