The mere sisht of t;1is frail, half-r.aked man was enough to instil passions in thousands of people, who gave up t~eir lives to fight for the Cauc;e-Independence. His death at the hands of the khaki clad Godse at the infancy of independence brought home to us even then that for India the real enemies lay not outside the cot:ntry; but within, 1n people who thrive on our insecurities, and masquerade these in the name of nationalism, their xenopr.obic sl oganeering Intended to sow seeds of hatred and divisions into our secular fabric until ultimately this venomous rhetoric begins to find its mark, causing communal, casteist and religious frenzy. Sadly, what we are witnessing today :n the country in the aftermath of Godhra and the consequent riots in Gujarat seems to tell us that Gandhi's supreme sacrific(" v·as in vain; his legacy uprooted and destroyed. For did he not tell us that: ·All c,f us are Indians first and last, wherever we may live and to whatever caste and creed we belong. Religion is entirely a personal matter. Each one can approach hi5. July 2ih. 1947) But who would tell thc:~t to Narendra Modi and his cronies, many of whom will be paying the customary lip service to the greatness of the Mahatma tomorrow through sound bytes on TV the press. Words essential to the understanding of Gandhi-ahimsa ( non violence) and satyagraha (truth) do not exist in the vocabularies of these tyrants , who feed on the flames of himsa or violence, who provoke minorities through lies and aim only to create divisions within the secular fat ric of rn.!r country. .
On th1s day therefore, it is time for all of us to look back and think: Have 'Ne lost everything that th is great man fought for? As we pay tnbute to him ar.d to Lal Bahadur Shastri on their b1rth anniversaries, let us go back to Gandhi's own words· .
