The highlight of Christie's book — about a murder committed on a snowbound luxury train — may be Hercule Poirot's quotable quip: "I do not like your face, Mr. Ratchett."

Gianfranco Calligarich: L'ultima estate in città (1973) | Der letzte Sommer in der Stadt | Last Summer in the City

A cult classic of Italian literature that, after initial successes in its first publication year of 1973, was twice forgotten and twice rediscovered (reissues in 2010 and 2019). After the last rediscovery, however, the novel was also translated into numerous languages. A fascinating, witty and melancholic novel with a very unhappy ending.

I've been drawing, painting and taking photographs since I was about nine years old. I have always seen images everywhere. Throughout my life that has been both constant and un-ending - but, oddly enough, never overwhelming.

It has been, and remains, a source of joy and comfort.

This image was just shadows on a wall, a plant in a glass vase, a blue ceramic pot, sitting momentarily in the passing afternoon sun. It has been sitting there - un-noticed - for. ever.

Then one eye sees, the other feels. (Side note: the people who live in this house didn't recognize what part of the house this is in. They pass it everyday.) :-)

When I was in art school, and on occasion since, friends have said to me, "I wish I could see what you see." I wanted to say something profound or hopeful, cute or quotable, but I don't know how I see what I see.

If all children are creative - seeing and feeling as artists, singers, dancers, poets and more (and I think they are) - and "the challenge is to stay that way as an adult," - Picasso, then what happens to it? Where does it go? Is it recoverable or lost forever?

I like to think seeing and feeling in artistic ways are always available, anywhere, anytime to most of us. As adults we might have to justify that to ourselves and be willing to find value in it. Perhaps then one might be open to work at it a bit. I have no doubt that creative "seeing and feeling" is a spirit that lives as a possibility within most of us. Might you be willing to "see with one eye, and feel with the other" a little each day?

Sweet fancy Moses! It's a sweet Betsy trillium, blooming in early spring!

▶ "Trillium cuneatum —commonly known as little sweet betsy, whip-poor-will flower, large toadshade, purple toadshade, and bloody butcher— is a species of flowering trillium (in the butterwort or Melanthiaceae family), native to the southeastern United States.

Trillium cuneatum has three broad, mottled leaves surrounding a sessile [blossom without a stalk], banana-scented flower. The petals are erect and either maroon, bronze, green, or yellow in color, flowering from early March to late April. It is the largest of the eastern sessile-flowered trilliums."

Life is full of ups and downs: this week has proven that to me. I found out last week that I was accepted into the Masters Program I had been dying to get into that starts on the 14th and today I found out that I will be having my remaining wisdom teeth pulled on the 9th. Joy. Hopefully I won't look like a chipmunk my first day. And even with dental insurance, it's going to cost me a $500 down payment. Can I just say, I am not the slightest bit fond of the health care system here in the US: they do not consider the best interests of their citizens. I'm moving to Canada...

I'm just tired of going to doctors and feeling like I'm broken and need fixing. So today I'm trying to forget about the hardships I'm facing. I'm painting and thinking about happier times like that day in the tulip fields with Cory...

Who was John Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010), and what does he have to do with Blythe dolls?

The answer is: he was an American basketball player and head coach at the University of California, Los Angeles. Wooden was renowned for his short, simple inspirational messages to his players. These often were directed at how to be a success in life as well as in basketball. He has NOTHING to do with Blythe dolls!

This picture is for the theme "Wooden" in the Blythe a Day group on Flickr. Even though my house is full of many wooden objects, I couldn't think of a satisfying way to use any of them in a doll picture. When I Googled the word "wooden," the first thing that appeared was a list of quotes from John Wooden--and I always love a good quote! This doll is Jane, my Kenner Blythe.

This quote:

"How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray? " was said by Chet, played by the late Bill Paxton in the movie Weird Science. Love that movie and adore Bill Paxton, he's had some of the most quotable movie lines of all time. He was an amazing actor and he will be missed.

Growing up, Gabo's books were a bit of a bore. One hundred years of solitude was a mandatory read in the curriculum of every single school in the city (probably the country) somewhere around sixth or seventh grade. Someone in a stroke of immense wisdom decided that this novel that appears to report the ins and outs of the life of a family that consists of an incessant number of Aurelianos and Arcadios would appeal to people that are too embroiled in the hormonal discharges of puberty.

And so Gabo's writing became an obligation, a beauty pageant cliché: Miss Cartagena, who is your favourite writer?

I suppose this is partly why Garcia Marquez' work touched my heart only in late adulthood despite being the most prestigious written word of and about my land and "my people" . Apparently, in the high school days of my father, a very common *spanish class* exam question was to ask the students to draw a precise genealogical tree of the Buendía family. I reckon´ it's almost criminal to force-feed any kind of literature to teenagers in that way.

I regret not paying enough attention much earlier though. Seeing his work in Netflix, his lines adorning the faces of some of the incredibly talented actors and actresses that I have only had the chance to see in cheap telenovelas filled me with immense pride. As Colombia starts to turn into somewhat of a cultural powerhouse for the world, it is amazing to see that we have something deeper and more sensible to offer than Shakira and Karol G (though I like some of their songs).

We should all pay more attention, I submit: This man has written some of the most beautiful lines in the Spanish language about the way we are and how we fit into the world. His work underscores an amazing contradiction: It speaks about the peculiar violence and partisanship that has kept Colombians alone in the darkness for many years and at the same time universalises our travails and tragedies. It is partly because of Gabo that we haven't been completely in solitude in the worldmap of culture. He was not the kind of writer that spews quotable little phrases, but my adult Colombian self burns with pride and longing when reading some of those amazingly beautiful sentences that he uses to describe our smells and colors, the raw beauty of our women, the things that we do in seek of joy and solace, the flaws of our character, the violent manner in which we think about power, the surprised way in which we look at the world, the strange currents in which the river of history has brought us all the way here.

The "Geislergruppe" is one one the most beautiful mountain ranges in South Tyrol and since 2009 along with the Dolomites World Natural Heritage. At the end of the Villnöss Valley a path leads from the Zanser Alp to the higher located Geisler Hut. From there you have this stunning view to the "Geislergruppe" with the main peaks Wasserkofel, Furchetta und Sass Rigais. I think there is a lot of truth in the highly quotabled slogan, that the Dolomites are the most beautiful mountains in the world...

My Top 10 Favorite Movies at the moment to be exact. If you have followed me for a while, you might remember this: www.flickr.com/photos/99717434@N04/12554370323/

As you can see, quite a lot has changed since then, and movies that were in the top 5 were moved and or removed completely. This is due to me either having a change in taste or me simply seeing new movies since that photo.

These ranks are based on how much I enjoy the movie and how much I have watched each film. AND REMEMBER. These are my FAVORITE FILMS, not the best films ever made. These are just movies that I really enjoy.

I'll be going from Right to Left, starting with....

10. Watchmen: This movie gets a lot of hate, but I love it. Jackie Earl Haley is fantastic as Rorschach, Jeffery Dean Morgan is always a pleasure to see, and the whole film just looks great. Synder may not nail stories, but he can damn sure well make a movie look good. Also a huge fan of the soundtrack. This was moved from the top 5 for two reasons. I've watched some of these others movies a lot more since then, and I liked the other movies better than it, but it still holds a place on my top 10.

9. Guardians of The Galaxy: A surprise for me, this movie shocked me with how much I enjoyed it. Casting is great, movie looks great, but the main reason I love it so much is the soundtrack using the 70's music. Hence this, that's why it is only number 9.

8. The Big Lebowski: I've only seen it twice, but I love this movie so much. It's so damn quotable. Casting and acting in this is perfect. It's also pretty damn funny.

7. Django Unchained: Love Tarantino films. For many of the same reasons of Lebowski, the casting and acting is perfect, it has it's funny moments, it has its offensive moments, and it has its action moments. Just a really enjoyable and entertaining as hell film. It beats Lebowski only by a little, simply because I have watched it more than Lebowski.

6. The Dark Knight: While Bale is my least favorite Batman, Heath Ledger's Joker is what puts this movie on the list. Also love Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart in it. Just a fantastically shot, written, scored, and acted movie.

5. The Shawshank Redemption: Ironically, my 5th spot is the movie that I have seen the least on this list, only seeing it once all the way through, and then parts of it for all other viewings. But that's all it needed. This film is just fantastic. Just a great story of triumph and patience.

4. Ghostbusters (1984): It hurts me to have to put the year of the film considering that the trash heap coming out Friday shares the same name. I feel I don't talk about the og Ghostbusters enough, but I love it. You can't go wrong with Bill Murray, and the special effects and writing is great. Over the years as I have grown older and re watched it, I have really come to appreciate it more. And no, I will not be seeing the new "Ghostbusters".

3. Zootopia: If you haven't noticed, I've kind of gotten pulled in by this movie, and I don't really know why. On this list, it is my 3rd most watched, hence it being at 3. I've watched this movie maybe 7 or 8 times all the way through, and then a ton more times to just watch scenes. I'm not even a huge Disney fan, but this movie really hit me. The characters are so likable, the voice acting is on point, the animation is impressive and visually stunning. It also has some kickass references to the Godfather and Breaking Bad. Also, JK Simmons is in it. Can't go wrong with JK Simmons. I've been "made fun of" for liking this movie, and some of the "bullies" (for lack of a better word) have now bitten there tongue as they have seen the movie to, and took back the hate.

2. The Dark Knight Returns: Weird that my 2 and 3 spots are both animated films. Also funny that I have made a whole series of custom figures from each film at 2 and 3. I am considering Part 1 and 2 as one film, although each parts could easily count as there own movies. It's my favorite Batman story, and I love watching this movie. It may be animated, but it is not for kids. Peter Weller did great as Batman, and I also really liked Michael Emerson's Joker. Just an entertaining move that I have watched to many times to count.

1. Jaws: This will always be my #1 favorite film. I doubt it will ever change. I adore this film. Perfect casting, score, effects, writing, and direction. This movie is famously known for being a pain in the ass to make, and it was a better movie for it. People say "the shark looks fake", but I personally think it looks fine. For being made in the 70's, it's damn good. I grew up with this movie, and watched it over and over as a child. I even had it on VHS and had to rewind it over and over before I finally got it on DVD when I got older. The only part that bothered me was the part where Hooper goes into the shark cage. Hell, I wasn't even bothered at the part where the Ben Garner's dead corpse comes out of the side of the boat when Hooper is night diving. Despite this being my favorite film, I have still not made customs of the 3 main protagonist, but that might change soon. I cherish this film as one of my childhood favorites, and as I grew up watching it again, I came to appreciate and love it even more.

Also, here are some honorable mentions: Star Wars ESB, Transformers (2007), Ironman, Smokey and The Bandit, Back To The Future, and The Love Bug.

What do you think? What do you think of my personal favorite films? I know it's long, but it took time to write, so some feedback to what I have written would be greatly appreciated.

Taco Tuesday lighting above the table. To clarify, the habanero sauce was hot. Thanks AlmonRoth for being so quotable.

On this Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful for a Constitutional Republic, the great American experiment. Recent developments in our culture and in politics mean we are going to have to fight to maintain our liberties. But guarding our Republic against tyranny has always been a reality, not just now.

Black kite uses fire by Su_G': entry in Spoonflower's 'Birds of Prey Wallpaper' Design Challenge. © Su Schaefer 2023

My design features the Black Kite, a tool-using Australian bird that spreads fire to hunt prey. Aboriginal traditions, across multiple groups in different areas, portray birds of prey as animals which carry fire… and field research has now confirmed this for black kite, brown falcon. Some say people learned from birds. For more, see sevenages.org/environmental-issues/birds-of-prey-in-austr...

Sorry that the new voting system still (sigh) has bugs... www.spoonflower.com/design-challenge/Birds of Prey Wallpaper is the link for voting - generally open for one week only.

BUT be warned! There are about 950 entries, some of which are not very visible in the low quality rendered wallpaper mockups (those actual designs I checked are of much higher quality).

If you do feel reckless and decide for the "new and exciting" voting experience please let me have some quotable quotes re what worked and what didn't so I can pass them on to Spoonflower. Thank you! :-)

But I understand if that's too much.
