Tiger Herons – another bird species containing a mammal name, for those of you who took part in one of our previous quizzes – belong to the genus Tigrisoma, which contains only three species and only occur in Central and South America. This one, the Bare-throated Tiger-heron, as is evident in this photo by Rich Lindie, is particularly easy to see in parts of its range like the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico, where this startled individual was photographed.

“Are you ready to come home now?” she quizzes. “I remember coming round that night and seeing you climbing aboard your boat, I called to you but you were too far away. As your boat drifted out to sea, you never looked back.”

“I moved to Mevagissey to find a place to live. Every day I returned to the burnt remains of our house and waited for you, but you never came back. Come back now Jake and be with us. Come home.”

I try to tell her about 'Green Gills' and the awful events of that night, but my mouth fills with fish bones. I try to clear my mouth but it keeps filling. I drop to my knees and with my finger I write in the sand, C-U-R-S-E-D!

She places her hand under my chin and pulls me up. She wipes the remaining fish bones from my chin and leans forward whispering, "There's no such thing as a curse". A gentle kiss on my lips transports us to the port of Mevagissey where it's warm and peaceful. Very different to the Mevagissey I remember. Where are the drunks? Where are the crooks? It’s so calm and inviting.

Rosa shows me the cottage where they live and mouths the words "Come Home".

04/20/10.

"I took my bruises, took my lumps, I fell down and then I got right back up"

THIS IS MY LEG...just to clarify. I will discuss later. But first:

I woke up bright and early again at 7AM to study. We had our third and final quiz in Foundations today at 10AM immediately following our final quiz in senior design. The senior design quizzes are a weekly occurrence, are quite easy, and aren't worth many points. The foundations quiz on the other hand, is something to fret about. And yet, I hadn't had a minute to spare in about a week. I studied very efficiently despite exhaustion, and both quizzes went well.

Then it was gametime. Our presentation was set to start at 1:30 PM, so we had just a couple hours to tie everything together. I haven't been this nervous for something like this in a long time. We ended up presenting first, hoping to just get it over with. I basically did the entire structural design of our project, so that was my focus on the presentation. As soon as I started talking, I completely forgot I was nervous and everything went extremely well. All 3 of us felt really good about it, but we figured he would rip us a new one in the comments afterwards. To our surprise, he was really impressed with our project! He gave us a few small things to check, but said we were pretty much done (we still have to turn in the written portion of the project on April 30).

On top of all this, playoffs for soccer started today. Our first game was at 3:15, but I couldn't make it due to presentations (each one takes about 45 minutes). I knew that most of our guys were busy then, and didn't even expect us to have enough guys to show. We somehow got enough guys, and played most of the game 6 on 8. Somehow we pulled off a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation and then won PKs. My team made it to the semifinals.

I got there right when the game had finished. Our next game was to be at 5:15, so I stayed around and watched the other game. We were playing our arch-rivals again (The Crans), although this time they had their entire team.

About 5 minutes into the game, David gave me a beautiful through ball that put me one on one with the keeper. The ball was pretty far out ahead of me though, and the keeper came out of the box to get it. I kept running in hopes to win the ball, and he muffed the kick. For a split second, I could see nothing but the ball two feet in front of me and an open net about 10 feet away. And then suddenly I was falling, and I watched the ball roll towards the net before a defender kicked it away. The keeper had caught my leg with his studs when he tried to kick the ball! (You can clearly see the mark the cleats made on leg even though its a poor picture. It's actually pretty swollen and surprisingly hurts, although I didn't notice the pain during the match). The refs didn't even put the whistle to their mouth. I didn't bother to argue, because I thought I'd get another chance.

We went into half still tied 0-0 and we didn't even have a shot on goal yet. To switch things up, I moved back to central defensive mid posistion to allow our star player some time a striker. Bad idea. The problem wasn't finishing, it was that we weren't getting the ball played to the strikers in the first place, and now arguably our best defender was only worried about offense. They scored two quick goals, and we switched back. We played much better in the last 10 minutes but couldn't convert anything. With 30 seconds left, I sent a corner kick into Peter for an easy header goal. I'm actually still pretty proud of how perfect my pass was, but it was just too little, too late. We lost 2-1. So our men's team will not be repeating our championship run from the past two semesters, but we still have the co-ed title to defend on Sunday.

So now it's time to relax for a bit. I don't really have anything to work on the rest of this week. I'm just worried about catching up on sleep now. I am pretty excited for the Japandroids concert on Thursday and then I'm sure I'll do something this weekend for my birthday. Finally, I'll just buckle down for my final week of classes and then prepare for finals...

I can't believe it's all about to end.

Director Scott Kubly quizzes the kids on the correct ways to cross a street.

Pat, you are my obsession.

Maybe if I make make myself look more like you you will notice me.

Day 295 of 365.

PS - Based on two internet quizzes, it turns out I'm not a total narcissist.

You are an obsession, I cannot sleep

I am a possession unopened at your feet

There is no balance, no equality

Be still I will not accept defeat

I will have you, yes I will have you

I will find a way and I will have you

Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly

I will collect you and capture you

You are an obsession, you're my obsession

Who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me

(x2)

I feed you, I drink you by day and by night

I need you, I need you by sun or candlelight

You protest, you want to leave

You say there's no alternative

Your face appears again, I see the beauty there

But I see danger, stranger beware

A circumstance in your naked dreams

Your affection is not what it seems

You are an obsession, you're my obsession

Who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me

(x2)

My fantasy has turned to madness

All my goodness has turned to badness

My need to possess you has consumed my soul

My life is trembling, I have no control

I will have you, yes I will have you

I will find a way and I will have you

Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly

I will collect you and capture you

You are an obsession, you're my obsession

Who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me

(x2 an fade)
