9/30/2010: Image and color profile P9 of VC-1 wmv file encoded with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. The image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the video in VLC Media Player 1.1.4 on a Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The wmv video appears somewhat pale compared to playback in Windows Media Player 12 and RealPlayer SP (see previous slides P2 and P4).

It's 11:50 at night right now, I'm curled up in my tent, 3 miles outside of Republic, Washington. I'm pretty heavy-eyed at the moment, so this might be a somewhat short post.
I'm very excited to post the 1st sneak-peak raw interview of the trip. I met Jack Denson in Rockport and knew right away he was "one of those people" I'd love to talk with at several points during our way east (if he's willing, of course). He's got just a great personality, and he's very relaxed on camera.
We lost him for a day after Marblemount, but drove past the bike shop in Winthrop and spotted him talking outside. Turned out he was spending the day at the KOA down the street and was happy to talk to us.
One thing to keep in mind is we didn't have the "nice microphone" on the camera with the HDV35 kit, we ran the XLR into the wide, so this is a shot-gun mic mounted to the front of the FX1. We have the nice-nice sound on the other tape, which, if I had the time, I could have synced up the two. But I'm on the run, so that will have to wait.

These pictures were taken during filming for Project Pedal, a indie-film / documentary about the memory of a long distance bike ride.
We were on the road for 64 days, following a bicyclist from Anacortes, Washington to Bar Harbor, Maine. This project was inspired by a 55 day bike ride I took in 2001 from Michigan to the Golden Gate Bridge... I've put everything into this project... I still have a long ways to go.

10/2/2010: Image and color profile P11 of VC-1 wmv file encoded with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. The image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the video in VLC Media Player 1.1.4 on a second Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The color and luminance profile improves in VLC when the file is played on a different Vista-32 computer (see slide P9). There is no noticeable difference compared to Windows Media Player 12 and RealPlayer SP (slides P2 and P4).

At the end of the video an Iranian election protest begins to be set up from the green van.
Taken from a series of six hand rendered cells, manipulated in Adobe Photoshop to give 30 frames and animated on a Mac. Handrawing pencil, pen and ink, traditional airbrushing in winsor and newton transparent ink.

9/30/2010: Image and color profile P18 of a source H.264 mp4 file prior to editing. The video image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in VLC Media Player 1.1.4 on a Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The source mp4 image appears somewhat pale in VLC Media Player compared to Windows Media Player 12, but darker than RealPlayer SP and default QuickTime (see slides P13-P16). However, there is little noticeable difference between the source video and EE4 output when played in VLC Media Player on the same computer (see previous slides P9-P10). Therefore the loss of contrast is likely a result of player-specific codecs and color management.

9/28/2010: Image and color profile P8 of H.264 mp4 file encoded with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. The image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in QuickTime 7.5.5 Pro on a Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
QuickTime Pro visual settings were modified by changing transparency from "Dither" to "Blend 100%" and "Straight Alpha." This results in an improved image profile compared to the standard QuickTime and RealPlayer settings (slides P5-P7). However, the image is still relatively pale compared to playback in Windows Media Player 12 (see slide P3). In addition, QuickTime cannot save the video with modified settings.
