Finally got my car back from the garage this weekend so have went out and about on Saturday and Sunday. This is the first of my shots from one of my favourite streams in Healey, Northumberland. The leaves had started to fall giving that wonderful splash of orange against a dark and damp river channel.

Although I was mainly there to find some new waterfalls (something which always gets me excited), what caught my eye on this one was the shimmering water at the bottom left. Looks like the rock is floating on a layer of mercury. I'm not sure what it is, as it didn't really stand out when I took it, but something about the shot grabs me.

Thoughts and criticism appreciated....

Mercury is the only liquid metallic element at room temperature. Its density is a whopping 13600 kg per cubic metre but droplets hold together because mercury has such strong surface tension. The atoms of mercury cohere to each other more strongly than they adhere to the surface they are sitting on. The victory of cohesion over adhesion also explains why mercury has a convex meniscus in a glass tube.

Mercury is toxic and this picture was taken on Ilford FP4 monochrome film in the early 1980's when there were less stringent rules about use. The EXIF data refers to the scan/digitisation date.

This unit has QuickSilver exhaust system. Therefore, LOUD AS MADNESS!

Quicksilver lamp - I made from droplets of aluminum, with five high intensity LEDs as the light source. In daylight its all about the aluminum, at night its the walls.
