Ever have those days, where the world seems so overwhelming? And the future is so undefined that you just want to explode?
Yeah, I had one of those days.
I can't remember what this was, but I'm at the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices in Minneapolis, MN. This museum no longer exists as of 2002, and some of the devices ended up in the Science Museum in St. Paul, MN. Taken 1/26/02

And want to state right at the begin, that I am well aware of the difficulties and challenges of your job. Even if I am annoyed on a regular basis by blocks of politics of politicians clapping only for the own party.
But after listening to your recent remarks about educationspolicy mental questionmarks remain. So I want to tell you from my own experiences as a chronic student on eternal basis.
As I began my studies in the year 1999 I got 100 Deutsche Mark (50 Euro/75 $) per month. My parents did try to help me, too - as far as possible. Still it was a tugh time. So I did look out for a ob to earn money - not only for the rent and the (not fulfilling) refectory, but for books to study. Perhaps You knw that: In every single field of study you get a list - and each professor thinks his own favourites as most important.
My student loan only allowed ten hours f work per week - and that would have been to less to live. The offered job made my live much more easy - with 25 hours of work in the evenings and at nights. And here I was able to keep the money, while the loan had to be repaid. By the way: Now I am 30 and already have paid back the complete loan I so far got.
But: Of course it's difficult to study properly while having such a kind of job. If you work three or four shifts per week, usually up to eleven pm, often even later, then it's hard to be awake and interested at 9 am in the university. But while studiying I have achieved several abilities at the work (two cinemas after another). I became a supervisor twice. I know very well that I do study now even longer than Kierkegaard did. But I will write my finishing papers next semester.
Why I do work so much?
How simple: I work one week for the rent, for the important insurances nearly two weeks und nearly another full week for the monthly savings that I pay my tuition fees every semester. Let's add up all that to three weeks. But then I do nt have bought a single book for the university. Copying is three times as expensive as in a copy shp around the crner but we're not allwed to take books out of the university. - And I do not have eaten anything yet.
Ladies and gentlemen, I don't want to moan on high level here.
But were does all my payed money go to? I do totally understand that I have to pay money for social reasons. Even if I do not need any of the payed places in the daycare or Kindergarten myself. I am thankful for the "Semesterticket" (we are able to use the train in a special area for a very little fee), it really helps. And if I had to pay 200 Euro per Semester (Actually it's 750 including the "social fees") - but would know what is payed by that - I would understand.
But multiply the amount of students with the 500 Euro per semester - you must be puzzled that you often crash into the 'sanitary horizon'. You don't really understand that the library is now opened two hours longer - or that you only get very unprecise information, what the money is used for.
Where does the money really go to? Do the universities get all of it? Or do parts of it go to the cash office of North-RhineWestphalia for example?
And did you know that there are several subjects, ordering good books more often than they need them, only to make sure that the amount of money for their faculty is not shortened in the next year?
Ladies and gentlemen, dear minster of eductain Ms. Dr. Schavan - how sad that yu do take thr word "Bildungssparen" (education saving) so literal.
Because I usually would like to be well educated and after that I would like to work FOR a land from which I got my chances.
Sadly studiying theology makes me a target of clichés.

"Sehr geehrte Frau Präsidentin, meine Damen und Herren,
ich danke Ihnen für die einmalige Möglichkeit heute vor diesem hohen Haus reden zu dürfen.
Und ich möchte zu Beginn bemerken, dass ich die Schiwerigkeiten und Herausforderungen Ihres Berufs durchaus anerkenne. Auch wenn mich regelmäßig irritiert, dass hier nach Parteiblocksympathie geklatscht wird...
Aber nachdem ich Ihre bisherigen Ausführungen zur Bildungspolitik gehört habe bleiben bei mir einige mentale Fragezeichen. Und ich möchte Ihnen nur aus meinen eigenen Erfahrungen als chronischem Langzeitstudent etwas mitteilen.
Zu Beginn meines Studiums 1999 bekam ich 100 DM BaFöG pro Monat. Meine Eltern haben so weit irgendmöglich versucht mich ebenfalls zu unterstützen. Eng war es aber dennoch sehr. So dass ich mich nach einigen Semestern nach einem Nebenjob umsah, um mir nicht nur die Miete und die (sehr zweifelhafte) Mensa leisten konnte, sondern auch die Bücher fürs Studium. Vielleicht kennen Sie das: In jedem einzelnen Studienfach bekommt man eine Liste - und jeder einzelne Professor erachtet die eigenen Empfehlungen als unverzichtbar.
Mein BaFöG genehmigt jedoch nur zehn Stunden Arbeit pro Woche - und davon hätte ich kaum besser leben können. Der mir angebotene Job in einem Multiplexkino hingegen ermöglichte mir bei 25 Stunden in Abend und Nachtschichten ein angenehmeres Leben - mit dem Vorteil dass ich mein Geld am Ende sogar behalten durfte. Nebenbei: Dadurch ist es mir möglich mit 30 Jahren im Dezember mein komplettes bis dahin erhaltenes BaFöG zurückzuzahlen.
Aber: Natürlich läßt sich mit einem Nebenjob nicht so leicht studieren. Wenn man drei bis vier Schichten pro Woche arbeitet, die selten vor 23 Uhr, oft erst um 2 Uhr enden, dann ist es schwer da noch morgens um neun Uhr in der Uni zu sitzen. Aber parallel zum Studium habe ich mir bei meinen Arbeitgebern (zwei Kinos in Folge) weitere Kompetenzen erarbeitet. Bereits zum zweiten Mal stieg ich vom Servicemitarbeiter zum Teamleiter auf. Ich weiß sehr gut, dass mein Studium selbst die Zeit eines Kierkegaard inzwischen überschritten hat. Und doch ist ein Ende in Sicht, die Diplomarbeit ist für das nächste Semester geplant.
Warum ich denn soviel arbeite?
Wie einfach: Für die Miete arbeite ich eine Woche, für die notwendigen Versicherungen in Summe fast zwei Wochen, und dann fast eine ganze Woche für die monatlichen Rücklagen von denen ich die Studiengebühren zahle. Summieren wir es knapp auf drei Wochen. Aber dann habe ich noch kein Studienmaterial gekauft. Kopieren dürfen wir nur innerhalb der Universität zum dreifachen Preis im Vergleich zum Copyshop der zwei Minuten von der Univerität entfernt liegt. Und gegessen habe ich auch noch nicht.
Meine Damen und Herren ich möchte nicht auf allzuhohem Niveau hier jammern.
Aber wo bleibt denn das Geld, das ich jetzt seit mehreren Semestern zahle? Ich habe vollstes Verständnis dafür, dass ich als Student Sozialabgaben zahle. Auch wenn ich selber weder die Krippenplätze nutze noch zu den wirklich Bedürftigen gehöre, denen von diesem Beitrag geholfen wird. Ich bin dankbar für ein Semesterticket, das mir wirklich hilft. Und wenn ich pro Semester z.B. 200 Euro zahlen müßte - aber wüßte was davn bezahlt wird - so wäre auch das mir einsichtig.
Aber wenn Sie die Zahlen der Studenten mal mit den 500 Euro pro Semester multiplizieren - und dann feststellen müssen, dass man in Bnn zum Beispiel schon am sanitären Horizont zerschellt. Wenn Sie erfahren dass die Bücherei nun zwei Stunden länger geöffnet ist - und bestenfalls vage Angaben bekommen, wofür das Geld eingesetzt wird.
Wo geht das Geld denn nun wirklich hin? Landet es komplett bei den Universitäten? der doch erstmal in den Landeskassen?
Und wußten sie schon, dass es Fachbereiche gibt, die verzweifelt gute Bücher häufiger bestellen als nötig, nur damit sie für das Folgejahr den Betrag nicht gekürzt bekommen?
Meine Damen und Herren, sehr geeherte Bildungsministerin Frau Dr. Schavan. Wie schade, dass sie das mit dem "Bildunssparen" so wörtlich nehmen.
Denn eigentlich würde ich gerne gut ausgebildet und danach mit diesen Fähigkeiten auch für ein Land arbeiten, dem ich meine Ausbilungschancen mitverdanke.
Schade nur, dass ich als Thelogiestudent da so sehr dem Klischee zum Opfer falle.
Meine Damen und Herren, ich danke für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit.

The Question Mark is one of the two anglewing butterflies we see in North Carolina. Note the small punctuation mark on its side. The Comma looks very similar but it's punctuation mark is missing the dot.
The anglewing butterflies look like leaves.

There is so much going on in this picture that I have found it hard to determine the names of these nebulae precisely. I think that Cederblad 214 is the very large area of emission nebulosity and that NGC 7822 is the bright region in the centre of the picture and that's what I'm going with.
So, the brightest part of this nebula is NGC 7822, also known as the Question Mark Nebula (or the Teddy Bear Nebula). It is a young star forming complex in the constellation of Cepheus. It encompasses the emission region designated Sharpless 171, and the young cluster of stars named Berkeley 59. The complex is believed to be some 2,900 Light years distant with the younger components aged no more than a few million years. The complex also includes one of the hottest stars discovered within 3000 light years of the Sun.

Poor spelling on a wall in Tórshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands.
As any scholar of Faroese will tell you, the letter Edd (Ð,ð) is a curious linguistic beast: only there because Icelandic has it, but never pronounced. Its purpose is for decoration and to confuse the locals, many of whom don't really know what to do with it. The writing on the wall should be mál, of course, meaning "goal" or "finishing line", for example in a boat race. Malð makes as much sense as goalð. This misspelling has achieved almost iconic status on these windswept islands and beyond. Check Rems Blogt for more info.
Here's a shot from June 2006 with the offending letter painted over; my shot was taken last summer with the Ð restored to its former glory. At least two people in the Faroes care about this silent consonant quite a lot.
And while we're on the subject of Faroe Island football: I was there at the end of August 2011, and by chance was able to watch the national football team training for a World Cup qualifying match against Italy on September 2. When you consider that even the lowest paid Italian professional probably earns more in one week than the Faroe Islands' annual GNP, the unlucky 1-0 defeat was really a thumping victory for the islanders. Our ship was already on its way to Greenland by this time, but over the North Atlantic swell you could almost hear from the stadium the unisono "Vi blev røvet!". Sepp Blatter, unsurprisingly, was unavailable for comment last night.
I decided I wanted to do a photoshoot where the content wasn't decided by a uni brief, so I got some friends together and some props and set up a little shoot. This is one of my favourites from the day.
